Librarians and Faculty have a shared goal to reduce textbook costs by finding alternative ways to provide the same quality content, but at a price students can handle. One way to accomplish this is by utilizing electronic and open resources. This session will provide guidelines for librarians supporting faculty during this transition. Explaining China’S Wildlife Crisis: Cultural Tradition Or Politics Of Development, Peter J. Li

This chapter is about China’s wildlife crisis. As the following sections attempt to demonstrate, abuse of and assault on wildlife in captivity and in the wild have reached an unprecedented level on the Chinese mainland in the reform era (1978–present). Shocking brutality against wildlife animals has been frequently exposed by Chinese and international media. To readers outside East Asia, they ask if the Chinese are culturally indifferent to animal suffering. Indeed, does the Chinese culture sanction cruelty to animals? Or is it the contemporary politics of economic development that is more directly responsible for the crisis?

Rehabilitating Rescued Chinese Farm Bears (Ursus Thibetanus): Results, Limitations, And Implications, Peter J. Li

The objects of daily physical abuse and appalling deprivation for up to 22 years, rescued Chinese farm bears (Ursus thibetanus) pose a comprehensive challenge to the Chengdu Asiatic Black Bear Rescue Center, created and managed by the Animals Asia Foundation. This study looks at the unique conditions of the rescued bears, examines the center’s rehabilitation program, and identifies the program’s limitations. Despite the world-class care provided by the center and the qualitative improvement in their health, the bears have irreparable physical and mental incapacitation that undercuts their chances to survive in the wild. The increase in violent video game playing is a concern to many health professionals. Violent video games have been associated with detrimental effects in brain function and behavior in the people who play them, whether consistently or only a couple of times. Psychologist have examined violent video games and their negative effects in an effort to determine their relationship. A majority of experiments have shown an increase of aggressive behaviors in participants who played video games. There are various questionnaires that can be used to assess an individuals’ workload when performing a task or set of tasks. One such measure is the Multiple Resources Questionnaire (MRQ , Boles & Adair, 2001). The MRQ was developed to address the diagnostic limitations of other workload measures (such as the NASA-Task Load Index) and consists of 17 items to determine which perceptual and cognitive resources a task involves. Furthermore, the measure can be used to identify areas that should be addressed to alleviate overload of specific resources. This paper presents a new theoretical contribution which seeks to provide a framework
for the labor movement to be rebuilt by engaging both in traditional labor struggles and in social
movements. I argue that the labor movement must use labor power to fight for social change on
all fronts, using demands which bridge member consciousness to social movement
consciousness, as well as framing and organizing tactics which unite the community around the
union. This paper provides a theoretical analysis of labor movement and social movement theory

This article is based, with some improvements and updating, on chapter 15 of Howard Sherman and Paul Sherman, INEQUALITY, BOOM AND BUST: FROM BILLIONAIRE CAPITALISM TO EQUALITY AND FULL EMPLOYMENT (London and New York: Rutledge, 2018 - see book on this site to read chapter 1). There are two important findings about the United States (U.S.) economy from Sherman (2018). First, each expansion of capitalism during the business cycle causes increased income and wealth inequality. Second, rising inequality is the major cause of recessions, depressions, and unemployment.

Hear about the tools one library used to assess their virtual reference service with text analysis research by using 6 semesters of 10,000 chat transcripts. They used Voyant and Lexos software to extract words and phrases from the chat transcripts and establish word counts and frequencies, then compared the vocabularies of librarians vs. students in chat reference interviews to improve communication between librarians and their user base; findings are being applied to reference tools and resources. Who Benefits From Economic Development Incentives? How Incentive Effects On Local Incomes And The Income Distribution Vary With Different Assumptions About Incentive Policy And The Local Economy, Timothy J. Bartik

This report presents results from a simulation model that examines the effects of economic development incentives (e.g., tax incentives such as property tax abatements or job creation tax credits) provided to businesses by state and local governments in the United States. The model simulates effects of incentive policies on the incomes of local residents, both for different income types (e.g., labor income versus property income) and for different income quintiles, under different assumptions about the economy’s workings and public policy. Net benefits of incentives for local incomes are greater if the incentives have greater job-creation effects conditional on their effects …

Amidst a growing social movement to connect children to nature, little is understood about how children actually attach to place or the role of nature in shaping place attachments. While place attachment is an undertheorized concept, human attachment is well understood. In the chapter, an exploration of human attachment provides clarity of the potential outcomes of place attachment.
