"How The Birth Control Pill Influences Women's Attitudes And Expectations Of Themselves.", Molly Santora

Molly Santora

This study seeks to understand what influences women’s feelings and attitudes about pregnancy prevention through looking at the usage and/or attitudes surrounding the birth control Pill over time. We aim to understand how women of different generations learned about this invention, and how the concept of the Pill changed women’s expectations of themselves and their lives. This study compares three different generations of women – women currently under 30, women between ages 30 – 55 and women above 55 – to see how or if attitudes change over time. We hypothesize that women’s trust, comfort level, and positive attitudes of …

Imitation In Heterogeneous Populations, Jonas Hedlund, Carlos Oyarzun Apr 2018

Imitation In Heterogeneous Populations, Jonas Hedlund, Carlos Oyarzun

Carlos Oyarzun

Abstract We study a boundedly rational model of imitation when payoff distributions of actions differ across types of individuals. Individuals observe others' actions and payoffs, and a comparison signal. Two possible inefficiencies may arise: (i) uniform adoption, i.e., all individuals choose the action that is optimal for one type but sub-optimal for the other, or (ii) dual incomplete learning, i.e., only a fraction of each type chooses its optimal action. Which one occurs depends on the composition of the population and how critical the choice is for different types of individuals. In an application, we show that a monopolist serving …

Research Crowdfunding And Scholarly Communication: A Case Study Of Three Campaigns, Darren Chase, Dana Haugh, Victoria Pilato Apr 2018

Research Crowdfunding And Scholarly Communication: A Case Study Of Three Campaigns, Darren Chase, Dana Haugh, Victoria Pilato

Dana Haugh

Crowdfunding leverages the opportunities of online social networks to share ideas and connect individuals by seeking small donations from a large number of supporters in order to complete a project or develop a product. Research crowdfunding is emerging as a dynamic alternative or supplement to grant-funded research, particularly for low-cost research, researchers at institutions without strong traditions of grants-funded research, and high-risk or unconventional research with few or no sponsors. For some researchers, crowdfunding enables new and novel collaborations between researchers, entrepreneurs, artists, social and environmental activists, as well as facilitating unexpected uses and expressions of research. Through the lens …

A Pathway To Psychological Difficulty: Perceived Chronic Social Adversity And Its Symptomatic Reactions, Cody Ding, Jingqiu Zhang, Dong Yang Apr 2018

A Pathway To Psychological Difficulty: Perceived Chronic Social Adversity And Its Symptomatic Reactions, Cody Ding, Jingqiu Zhang, Dong Yang

Cody Ding

In this paper, we attempt to predict and explain psychological maladjustment or difficulty. Specifically, we discuss the concept of perceived chronic social adversity, and we expect that such perceived chronic social adversity may potentially lead to chronic stress responses. Accordingly, we propose the symptomatic reactions of perceived chronic social adversity. We put forward a set of hypotheses regarding the relationships between perceived chronic social adversity and those chronic stress responses, and we further hypothesize a mediating role of individualized negative essentialism brought by perceived chronical social adversity. Resilience and individual differences in the ability to cope with perceived adversity are …

Mentoring The Next Generation Of Librarians.Ppt, Tiffney Gipson Apr 2018

Mentoring The Next Generation Of Librarians.Ppt, Tiffney Gipson

Tiffney Gipson

Library mentoring programs can impact both experienced and new librarians.  While many librarians have benefited both personally and professionally from mentoring relationships, some argue that the next generation of librarians may not respond to typical traditional or classic mentoring techniques.  As a millennial who has had many in-depth discussions on this topic, the author believes that many of the mentoring tools that worked so well in the past do not seem to resonate with millennial librarians today.  For example, the baby-boom generation may have had one or two separate mentoring relationships throughout their career.  The millennial generation, however, may respond …

Preserving The Full Historic Record In Holistic Newspaper Digital Preservation: From The Backend To The Front, Virginia A. Dressler

Virginia A Dressler

The paper will address two issues present in digital newspaper collections, namely that of long-term storage and access solutions specific to this medium, and takedown requests. The paper will outline the storage and hosting solution in place at Kent State University (KSU) of the student newspaper. The current digital archive contains ninety years of the printed newspaper (1926-2016), both reflecting both digitized and born-digital content. Decisions will be highlighted on the files retained on the dark archive (pod0), and conversely which files are stored on the hosting platform as access files.

Then, results will be presented from a recent …

Strategies To Ensure A Right To Housing And Equitable Community Development In A Diverse City, Michael P. Johnson Jr.

Michael P. Johnson

The city of Boston is well-known as a hub of higher education, technology and innovation. It is also known as a very expensive city to live, one that is historically unfriendly to racial and ethnic minorities, especially African-Americans, highly segregated, and highly unequal according to measures of income and wealth. The office of the Mayor of Boston has sponsored a project course with undergraduate students at University of Massachusetts Boston with the goal of identifying policy and planning innovations to stabilize and revitalize Boston’s neighborhoods by increasing access to decent, affordable housing for all, with a focus on reducing eviction …

The Right To Be Forgotten And Digital Collections: Surveying Practice And Policy At Arl Member Institutions, Virginia A. Dressler, Cynthia Kristof

Virginia A Dressler

In the spring of 2017, digital librarians at Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institutions were surveyed on practices and policies surrounding takedown requests in openly accessible digital collections. The survey collected demographic information and also presented a series of hypothetical scenarios for respondents to consider and reflect upon. The survey received a 25.8% response rate, with many intriguing insights into how practitioners consider these type of requests. Survey findings and general background on the topic of the right to be forgotten will be presented, along with a discussion on future recommendations for work in this area.

A Change Is Gonna Come: Renewing Information Worker's Commitment To Social Justice, Elisa Slater Acosta, Aisha Conner-Gaten, Javier Garibay, Rhonda Rhosen, Desirae Zingarelli-Sweet

Aisha Conner-Gaten

Librarians and library staff have always tried to uphold the Library Bill of Rights, specifically the access and use of the library collections and space, but are we just a neutral bridge to information or something more? In an era increasingly defined by the socioeconomic and educational inequalities, the digital divide, the resurgence of white supremacy and Islamophobia, and "fake news", we as information workers must challenge how we have understood our roles in the library. In response to this charge, the William H. A Methodology For Studying The Information Seeking Behaviors Of Catholic Clergy, Charles C. Curran, Kayla Burns

Kayla Harris

This paper describes the construction of a set of interview questions to be used for discovering the information seeking behavior of Catholic clergy. It acknowledges previous findings, which indicate that clergy very infrequently consult library resources to fulfill their information needs. Instead of asking clergy about their information needs, the study team asks about decisions clergy make and about the resources they consult when making these decisions. The study looks at seven different responsibilities of clergy: Preaching, Teaching, Care Giving, Administering, Conducting Service/Liturgy, Counseling, and Reflecting/Engaging in Personal Development. The study differentiates between time spent executing a responsibility and time …

Theorizing American Freedom (Review Essay), Anthony O'Rourke Apr 2018

Theorizing American Freedom (Review Essay), Anthony O'Rourke

Anthony O'Rourke

This is a review essay of The Two Faces of American Freedom, by Aziz Rana. The book presents a new and provocative account of the relationship between ideas of freedom and the constitutional structure of American power. Through the nineteenth century, Rana argues, America’s constitutional structure was shaped by a racially exclusionary, yet economically robust, concept that he calls “settler freedom.” Drawing on the burgeoning interdisciplinary field of settler colonial studies, as well as on the vast historical literature on civic republicanism, Rana contends that the concept of settler freedom necessitated a constitutional framework that enabled rapid territorial expansion and …
