Patrick Henry: The Revolutionary Hero, Bailey A. Gillespy Dec 2017

Patrick Henry: The Revolutionary Hero, Bailey A. Gillespy

Scott T. Allison

This chapter explores several factors that drove Patrick Henry towards heroism,
examines what kind of hero he was, and addresses how his heroic action
impacted America. I will discuss the various steps of Henry’s heroic journey
using Christopher Vogler’s (2007) twelve step model, based on Joseph
Campbell’s (1949) hero’s monomyth. I will identify the attributes that enabled
Henry to achieve heroic status, drawing from Allison and Goethals’ (2011)
conceptualization of the great eight traits of heroes, and I will examine the
events of his life that led to the acquisition of these traits. I will examine how
Henry’s self-transformation and …

May Keller: The Hero Who Defied All Odds, Aliya J. Sultan Dec 2017

May Keller: The Hero Who Defied All Odds, Aliya J. Sultan

Scott T. Allison

In this chapter, I will explore Keller’s heroic traits and examine what factors
specifically make her a Richmond hero. I will describe the stages of Keller’s
heroic journey and discuss Joseph Campbell’s monomyth, which includes
three major events: departure, initiation, and return. From there I will look at
how Keller exhibited the great eight heroic traits from Allison and Goethals’
(2011) list of eight qualities that every hero possesses. I will also discuss how
Keller’s leadership affected her social identity and why her gender had an
influence on her leadership as well. I will also describe the nature of Keller’s …

Segmenting Human Trajectory Data By Movement States While Addressing Signal Loss And Signal Noise, Sungsoon Hwang, Cynthia Vandemark, Navdeep Dhatt, Sai Yalla, Ryan Crews Dec 2017

Segmenting Human Trajectory Data By Movement States While Addressing Signal Loss And Signal Noise, Sungsoon Hwang, Cynthia Vandemark, Navdeep Dhatt, Sai Yalla, Ryan Crews

Sungsoon Hwang

This paper considers the problem of partitioning an individual GPS
trajectory data into homogeneous, meaningful segments such as
stops and trips. Signal loss and signal noise are highly prevalent in
human trajectory data, and it is challenging to deal with uncertainties
in segmentation algorithms. We propose a new trajectory
segmentation algorithm that detects stop segments in a noiserobust
manner from GPS data with time gaps. The algorithm consists
of three steps that impute time gaps, split data into base
segments and estimate states over a base segment. The statedependent
path interpolation was proposed as a framework for
gap imputation to …

The practice of pipe smoking was commonplace among indigenous cultures of the Eastern Woodlands of North
America. However, many questions remain concerning what materials were smoked and when tobacco first
became a part of this smoking tradition. Chemical analysis of organic residues extracted from archaeological
smoking pipes is an encouraging avenue of research into answering questions regarding the development of a
smoking complex within indigenous cultures of the Eastern Woodlands. In the right environmental conditions,
absorbed organic compounds within artifacts can remain structurally stable for millennia, allowing …

avowed purpose in life, also showing how his sense of meaning …

Lawrence Douglas Wilder: The Black Pioneer, Janell M. Spigner Dec 2017

Lawrence Douglas Wilder: The Black Pioneer, Janell M. Spigner

Scott T. Allison

This chapter seeks to unlock the intriguing complexity of Wilder’s heroism
and strives to give Wilder’s heroism the methodical reveling it deserves.
Specifically, the chapter will begin by exploring Wilder’s heroism through
the metaphorical lens of Joseph Campbell’s hero monomyth. Following that
exploration will be an analytical look at the qualities Wilder possesses that
place him among the pantheon of heroes. Then I will delve into the major
transformations that Wilder underwent internally, and how he also use his
transformations to transform others. Finally, the chapter will look at the lasting
imprint that Wilder is still in the process of …

Mary Sue Terry: The Hero Who Defied The Double Bind, Thomas J. Villani Dec 2017

Mary Sue Terry: The Hero Who Defied The Double Bind, Thomas J. Villani

Scott T. Allison

This chapter focuses on Mary Sue Terry’s heroism. Specifically, the goal of this chapter is to
demonstrate how Terry’s life followed Joseph Campbell’s classic monomyth
of the hero, how she underwent important personal transformations, how
she transformed others in meaningful ways, what type of hero she was, and
what heroic traits she displayed. From this analysis, the unmistakable conclusion
that one can reach is that Mary Sue Terry is one of the most inspiring
Richmond heroes in the city’s history.

Mary Elizabeth Bowser: The Humble Hero, Morgan E. Caron Dec 2017

Mary Elizabeth Bowser: The Humble Hero, Morgan E. Caron

Scott T. Allison

In this chapter, I will detail the heroic life of Mary Elizabeth Bowser. In doing
so, I will describe her life story and note the many ways that it parallels the
hero's journey as described by comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell
(1949). I will also discuss the central characteristics of Bowser that correspond
to the traits of a hero. Moreover, my goal is to delve into her heroic transformation,
noting the sources of her transformation and the many people who
helped her grow and evolve in significant ways. Finally, I will apply several
other theories and principles of heroism science with …

Ish: How To Write Poemish (Research) Poetry, Maria K. Lahman Ph.D., Veronica M. Richard Ph.D., Eric D. Teman J.D., Ph.D. Dec 2017

Ish: How To Write Poemish (Research) Poetry, Maria K. Lahman Ph.D., Veronica M. Richard Ph.D., Eric D. Teman J.D., Ph.D.

Eric D Teman, J.D., Ph.D.

Discussion has occurred around what constitutes quality research poetry, with some direction on how a researcher, who is a novice poet, might go about writing good enough research poetry. In an effort to increase the existing conversation, the authors review research poetry literature and ideas from art poets on how to read, write, and revise poetry. The authors interrupt the prose text throughout with poetic interludes and quotes from poets. The conversation is framed by the conception of ish and poemish which is drawn directly from Reynolds’s powerful book ish. Poemish representations may be said to be research representations characterized …

the lives of three important citizens of Richmond, Virginia, who have made
important contributions to humanity. First, important definitions and theories
of heroism will be provided. Then the chapter will classify and discuss
the heroism of Richmond’s own Gilbert Hunt, Elizabeth Van Lew, and Sally
Tompkins. The chapter concludes by discussing possible explanations as to
why these three heroes have remained largely unknown.

Waging War On Separate But Equal: Oliver Hill's Heroic Journey From Small Town To The Highest Court, Kathryn K. Lynch Dec 2017

Waging War On Separate But Equal: Oliver Hill's Heroic Journey From Small Town To The Highest Court, Kathryn K. Lynch

Scott T. Allison

It is incumbent upon the hero to rise above difficult circumstances to
achieve greatness. The hero's migration from the innocent childhood environment
is the first stage of Campbell’s monomyth of the hero’s journey, which
he refers to as departure (Campbell, 1949). The heroism of underdog individuals
is perhaps enhanced by the fact that no one expects much from them, and
that they choose to face challenges that threatened to destroy them so that
others may lead better lives in the future. It is often the case that heroes with
the most ordinary of beginnings go on to accomplish the most …

The Shellfish Corner: Cap And Trade Systems With Shellfish May Be Good For The Economic Bottom Line, Michael A. Rice Dec 2017

The Shellfish Corner: Cap And Trade Systems With Shellfish May Be Good For The Economic Bottom Line, Michael A. Rice

Michael A Rice

The development of a traditional form of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) in the Dagupan City Estuary system in the Philippines is based upon different producers each focusing on individual species rather than individual producers producing multiple species with very different market values. The long-term success of such a system requires attention to local marine spatial planning and enforcement of caps on forms of feed-based (net pen or fish cage) aquaculture systems.

Saving A University On The Brink: The Heroism Of E. Claiborne And Lora Robins, Lauren J. Weingarten Dec 2017

Saving A University On The Brink: The Heroism Of E. Claiborne And Lora Robins, Lauren J. Weingarten

Scott T. Allison

This article describes the heroic efforts of E. Claiborne and Lora Robins in saving the University of Richmond from the brink of bankruptcy. These two heroes' personal transformations will in part be explained by drawing upon
Allison and Goethals’ (2011) great eight traits of a hero, as well as the need for
a hero to discover his or her missing inner quality. Just how the Robins transformed
the community at the University of Richmond will then be discussed,
taking into account their family’s more recent history of generosity and the
Robins’ image as role models.

The Evolution Of Requirements Practices In Software Startups, Catarina Gralha, Daniela Damian, Anthony Wasserman, Miguel Goulão, João Araújo Dec 2017

The Evolution Of Requirements Practices In Software Startups, Catarina Gralha, Daniela Damian, Anthony Wasserman, Miguel Goulão, João Araújo

Tony Wasserman

We use Grounded Theory to study the evolution of requirements practices of 16 so ware startups as they grow and introduce new products and services. These startups operate in a dynamic environment, with significant time and market pressure, and rarely have time for systematic requirements analysis. Our theory describes the evolution of practice along six dimensions that emerged as relevant to their requirements activities: requirements artefacts, knowledge management, requirements-related roles, planning, technical debt and product quality. Beyond the relationships among the dimensions, our theory also explains the turning points that drove the evolution along these dimensions. These changes are reactive, …

Attitudes, Prior Interaction, And Petitioner Credibility Predict Support For Considering The Rights Of Robots, Patric Spence, Autumn Edwards, Chad Edwards Dec 2017

Attitudes, Prior Interaction, And Petitioner Credibility Predict Support For Considering The Rights Of Robots, Patric Spence, Autumn Edwards, Chad Edwards

Patric R. Spence

The purpose of this study is to determine levels of support for consideration of the rights of robots and to identify predictors of support for robot rights. Findings demonstrated that negative attitudes toward robots, perceived credibility of the petitioner, and prior interaction with robots were significant predictors of individuals agreeing to sign a petition on the issue of robot rights. Gender of the participant and whether the petitioner was a human being or Pepper robot did not significantly predict willingness to sign the petition.

Precarious Paradise: The Financial Well-Being Of Hispanic Immigrant Day Laborers In Malibu, Luisa Blanco, Lila M. Carlsen, Daniel R. Morrison, George Carlsen, Ashley Chaparro, Erick Molina Dec 2017

Precarious Paradise: The Financial Well-Being Of Hispanic Immigrant Day Laborers In Malibu, Luisa Blanco, Lila M. Carlsen, Daniel R. Morrison, George Carlsen, Ashley Chaparro, Erick Molina

Lila McDowell Carlsen

Using a mixed method approach we conducted a study consisting of written surveys, focus groups, and individual interviews with 58 men and women who were seeking employment through the Malibu Community Labor Exchange (MCLE) at the time of the study and were predominantly Hispanic immigrants. A central aim of this study is to develop an understanding of how Spanish-speaking Hispanic immigrant day laborers have fared financially in the aftermath of the economic crisis of 2007-2008. We find in our study that weak labor market conditions and intersecting inequities have led to job insecurity, job scarcity, and wage stagnation among workers …

The Nurse’S Role In Addressing Barriers To Cancer Screening Of African Americans: An Integrative Literature Review, Joseph D. Tariman Phd

Joseph D Tariman PhD, RN, ANP-BC, FAAN

Background: While investigations into racial cancer disparities have been conducted since cancer screening practices have begun, there are few studies that address barriers to cancer screening behaviors in African Americans particularly within the perspective of nursing. This concept is of particular concern because nurses have an opportunity and responsibility to impact the overall incidence and mortality of cancers.
Objective: The purposes of this integrative literature review were to simultaneously identify various barriers to early cancer detection and screening behaviors among African Americans and to evaluate the nursing interventions constituting the nurse’s role in overcoming these barriers.
Method: Research articles were …
