Barbara Tierney

Two academic library research service managers discuss changes and innovations that they have coordinated in their respective libraries (University of Central Florida serving 60,000+ students http://library.ucf.edu/21st/[1] and Florida Gulf Coast University serving 15,000+ students http://library.fgcu.edu/admin/renewal.html[2]) due to major building renovations or other changes that their respective libraries are conducting.

These changes and innovations include significantly downsizing print reference and other collections, relocating and redefining service points, reconfiguring public services, rethinking staffing models, adjusting subject librarian face-to-face activities, stepping-up online services, communicating with stakeholders, and keeping students and faculty in the loop so that their voices are heard …

The Moorehead Phase Occupation At The Emerald Acropolis, Jacob Skousen Dec 2017

The Moorehead Phase Occupation At The Emerald Acropolis, Jacob Skousen

Jacob Skousen

The Emerald site, also known as the Emerald Acropolis, was an early Mississippian pilgrimage center key to Cahokia's development. This paper presents the hitherto unpublished results of two archaeological projects conducted at the site, one led by Howard Winters and Stuart Struever in 1961 and the other by Robert Hall in 1964. These investigations produced the most comprehensive information on Emerald's Moorehead phase (1200-1300 CE) occupation during which two of its mounds were capped, a secondary mound was constructed on the central mound, and a mound-top structure was erected on this secondary mound. Similar activities took place throughout the region …

Circles Presentation.Pdf, Brandie M. Oliver

Brandie M. Oliver

This presentation will share the results of two pilot studies using Circles. Circles give people an opportunity to speak and listen to one another in an atmosphere of safety and equality. Circles were used to build and strengthen relationships as well as deliver academic content and increase social/emotional learning principles. One pilot study focused on infusing children’s literature into Circle lessons in a 3rd grade classroom and the second pilot study targeted academic motivation and lack of connectedness for high school students in 9th and 11th grade.

Legal Deserts: A Multi-State Perspective On Rural Access To Justice, Lisa R. Pruitt , Amanda L. Kool, Lauren Sudeall Lucas, Michele Statz, Danielle M. Conway, Hannah Haksgaard

Lisa R Pruitt

Rural America faces an increasingly dire access-to-justice crisis, which serves to exacerbate the already disproportionate share of social problems afflicting rural areas. One critical aspect of that crisis is the dearth of information and research regarding the extent of the problem and its impacts. This article begins to fill that gap by providing surveys of rural access to justice in six geographically, demographically, and economically varied states: California, Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. In addition to providing insights about the distinct rural challenges confronting each of these states, the legal resources available, and existing policy responses, the article …

Background: HIV RNA is identified in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within eight days of estimated viral exposure. Neurological findings and impaired neuropsychological testing performance are documented in a subset of individuals with acute HIV infection (AHI). The purpose of this study was to determine whether microstructural white matter and resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) are disrupted in AHI.
Methods: We examined 49 AHI (100% male; mean age = 30 ± SD 9.9) and 23 HIV-uninfected Thai participants (78% male; age = 30 ± 5.5) with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and rsFC acquired at 3 Tesla, and four neuropsychological tests (summarized as NPZ-4). …

Psychopathic Traits Linked To Alterations In Neural Activity During Personality Judgments Of Self And Others, Philip Deming, Carissa L. Philippi, Richard C. Wolf, Monika Dargis, Kent A. Kiehl, Michael Koenigs Dec 2017

Psychopathic Traits Linked To Alterations In Neural Activity During Personality Judgments Of Self And Others, Philip Deming, Carissa L. Philippi, Richard C. Wolf, Monika Dargis, Kent A. Kiehl, Michael Koenigs

Carissa Philippi

Psychopathic individuals are notorious for their grandiose sense of self-worth and disregard for the welfare of others. One potential psychological mechanism underlying these traits is the relative consideration of “self” versus “others”. Here we used task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to identify neural responses during personality trait judgments about oneself and a familiar other in a sample of adult male incarcerated offenders (n = 57). Neural activity was regressed on two clusters of psychopathic traits: Factor 1 (e.g., egocentricity and lack of empathy) and Factor 2 (e.g., impulsivity and irresponsibility). Contrary to our hypotheses, Factor 1 scores were not …

Unconditional Love And Evil Stepmothers: How Parents Are Heroes And Villains, Rebecca M. Fischer Dec 2017

Unconditional Love And Evil Stepmothers: How Parents Are Heroes And Villains, Rebecca M. Fischer

Scott T. Allison

In this chapter, I will discuss how parents are biologically driven to protect, care for, and motivate their children to success. These same biological drives may also hurt children, especially in the case of stepparents. Parents face considerable social pressure when deciding how to raise their child. Many parents get trapped in fads and in the idea that there is a perfect way to raise a child – and some ways may indeed do more harm than others. When taking parental fads to the extreme, parents run into the risk of harming their own children. Sometimes parents may abandon their …

How Food & Fitness Community Partnerships Successfully Engaged Youth, Arnell J. Hinkle, Catherine Sands, Neftali Duran, Lynette Houser, Laura Liechty, Julian Hartmann-Russell

Catherine Sands

Authentic youth engagement was a central component of the Food & Fitness (F&F) Initiative, a 9-year community-based intervention, whose goal was to ensure that all children have equitable access to healthy food and built environments that promote safe physical activity. The youth engagement component focused on strategies and structures that would support a model framework for youth involved in F&F community partnerships. These strategies empowered youth by providing the leadership and technical skills needed in collaborative efforts to sustain change in communities with inequities, where structural racism and inequities result in poor health outcomes for children. This article describes the …

Phoenix Rising: The Evolution Of Holyoke's Collaborative Organizing For Healthy Food Resilience, Catherine Sands, Neftali Duran, Laura Christoph, Carol Stewart

Catherine Sands

In the Holyoke Food & Fitness Policy Council (HFFPC) case study, the challenges of providing equitable multistakeholder organizing are examined. The importance of housing the work in the community, power sharing, and having community representation in the leadership is made clear. The HFFPC partnership began with vigor, encountered challenges of trust, transparency, aligned goals and values; it dissolved, and reformed. Because it began with shared values of strong communities and healthy people, the partnership continues to evolve, build local leadership, change narratives, and articulate the need for racial equity in their food system, while shifting local systems and policies that …

This study explores issues of burnout and job satisfaction among teachers. Teacher job satisfaction is a multifaceted construct that is critical to teacher retention, teacher commitment, and school effectiveness.  Female workforce is found to be greater than males who try to meet the educational needs of student right from early years which is regarded as a challenging job. In this backdrop an attempt is made through this paper to study how much satisfied are the teachers with their job in this sector. The study was carried with a sample of 134 employees (Masters and Teachers) was taken, working in private …

The Assessment Of Supply Chain Management Practice On Performance: A Survey, Cristian B. Humphreys Dec 2017

The Assessment Of Supply Chain Management Practice On Performance: A Survey, Cristian B. Humphreys

International Scientific Journals

The global economy is featured with global operations, outsourcing and supply chain supply chain management (SCM). The real challenge for managers of this new enterprise environment is to develop suitable performance measures and metrics to make right decisions that would contribute to an improved organizational competitiveness.  However, the supply chain management is new idea including the combination of all the esteem making components in the supply, assembling, and distribution forms, from raw material extraction, through the change procedure, to end-client utilization. The reason for this paper is to investigate the supply chain management exercises did by manufacturing organizations. A postal …

Cross-Country Heterogeneity In Students’ Reporting Behavior: The Use Of The Anchoring Vignette Method, Hana Vonkova, Gema Zamarro, Collin Hitt Dec 2017

Cross-Country Heterogeneity In Students’ Reporting Behavior: The Use Of The Anchoring Vignette Method, Hana Vonkova, Gema Zamarro, Collin Hitt

Gema Zamarro

Self-reports are an indispensable source of information in education research but they are often affected by heterogeneity in reporting behavior. Failing to correct for this heterogeneity can lead to invalid comparisons across groups. We use the parametric anchoring vignette method to correct for cross-country incomparability of students’ reports on teacher’s classroom management. Our analysis is based on the data from the Programme for International Student Assessment 2012. We show significant variation in implicit standards across countries. Correlations between countries’ average teacher classroom management levels and external variables like students test scores and public expenditure per pupil change substantially after our …
