The Effect Of A Computing-Focused Linked-Courses Learning Community On Minority And Female Students, Amber Settle, James Doyle, Theresa Steinbach Sep 2017

The Effect Of A Computing-Focused Linked-Courses Learning Community On Minority And Female Students, Amber Settle, James Doyle, Theresa Steinbach

Amber Settle

While enrollments in computing degrees and courses have grown rapidly in the past decade, both female and minority male students remain underrepresented in computing programs. This makes recruitment and retention of these populations a continuing concern. Affinity for a major is connected to student retention, and learning communities have proven effective for this purpose. We present an evaluation of a three-year linked-courses learning community in which we measure pre- to post-quarter changes in student attitudes and resource utilization. We find that participants in the learning community are significantly more likely to report being a part of a group of programmers …

Research Offers Tough Love To Improve Human Rights Practices, Joel Pruce Sep 2017

Research Offers Tough Love To Improve Human Rights Practices, Joel Pruce

Joel Pruce

We know what it means to practice a skill such as juggling or dancing, but what does it mean to "practice" human rights? Contributions to OpenGlobalRights (OGR), since its inception, have gravitated around critique of human rights practices by focusing on advocacy and activism, cultivating debates that address the contemporary dilemmas facing human rights movements worldwide. The launch of OGR four years ago is a symptom of what I’ve referred to elsewhere as a “practice turn” in the scholarly field of human rights—one that takes human rights practice as its subject, forges space for scholar-practitioner collaboration and communication, and focuses …

Shall We Chat? A Statistical Case Study Of Chat Reference Utilization, Jiebei Luo

Jiebei Luo

PurposeThis paper aims to evaluate the performance of a chat reference service implemented at an academic library in a private liberal arts college by gauging its impact on other forms of reference service in terms of usage volume, with a focus on research-related face-to-face reference questions. Design/methodology/approach Two statistical methods are used, namely, the difference-in-differences method and a simple moving average time series analysis, to analyze both the short-term and long-term impact brought by chat reference. Findings This study finds that the usage volume of the traditional face-to-face reference is significantly affected by chat reference in its first service year. …

Social Comparison And Persuasion In Health Communications, Jerry Suls, Kathryn Bruchmann Sep 2017

Social Comparison And Persuasion In Health Communications, Jerry Suls, Kathryn Bruchmann

Kathryn Bruchmann

Two basic social processes, persuasion and social comparison, have figured prominently in the development and implementation of health communications since the early 1950s. This chapter reviews relevant theory and evidence from basic persuasion and comparison research to demonstrate the centrality of the self-concept for understanding changes in personal belief, opinion, self-efficacy, and behavior change. Then, selective evidence and implications from health communications research are reviewed: Interventions using self-affirmation; gain-loss framing and graphic warning labels/fear appeals from the persuasion area; and interventions using normative provision, social comparison interventions, and support groups from the comparison area. In the final section, personalized, tailored …

Efficient Ethical Rules For Volunteer's Dilemmas, Ted C. Bergstrom Sep 2017

Efficient Ethical Rules For Volunteer's Dilemmas, Ted C. Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

This paper extends the classic Volunteer’s Dilemma game to environments in which individuals have differing costs and private information about their own costs. It explores
the nature of symmetric ethical optimum strategies for Volunteer's Dilemma games with and without differing costs. Where costs differ, ethical optima are constructed by symmetrizing the game with a Rawlsian “Veil of Ignorance

Evaluating Public Employment Programs With Field Experiments: A Survey Of American Evidence, Christopher J. O'Leary Sep 2017

Evaluating Public Employment Programs With Field Experiments: A Survey Of American Evidence, Christopher J. O'Leary

Christopher J. O'Leary

Research in the 1970s based on observational data provided evidence consistent with predictions from economic theory that paying unemployment insurance (UI) benefits to involuntarily jobless workers prolongs unemployment. However, some scholars also reported estimates that the additional time spent in subsidized job search was productive. That is, UI receipt tended to raise reemployment wages after work search among the unemployed. A series of field experiments in the 1980s investigated positive incentives to overcome the work disincentive effects of UI. These were followed by experiments in the 1990s that evaluated the effects of restrictions on UI eligibility through stronger work search …

Vr Usability From Elderly Cohorts: Preparatory Challenges In Overcoming Technology Rejection, George Coldham, David M. Cook Sep 2017

Vr Usability From Elderly Cohorts: Preparatory Challenges In Overcoming Technology Rejection, George Coldham, David M. Cook

Dr. David M Cook

Virtual Reality (VR) usability is an emerging area that has made rapid progress among early adopters, but has so far failed to address the concerns of late adopters. In particular, elderly cohorts stand to benefit greatly from VR technologies as they enter areas of assistive technology, gerontechnology, and authentic modes of training. This study examined technology rejection criteria from a sample of 19 retired persons by comparing normative and VR practices for the fundamental learning of navigation using Google Earth mapping. This research discovered that three dimensional fear was a major factor in determining the acceptance and rejection of VR …

Evaluating Visuals: Teaching Journalism Students Visual Literacy Skills With Infographics, Dana S. Thompson Sep 2017

Evaluating Visuals: Teaching Journalism Students Visual Literacy Skills With Infographics, Dana S. Thompson

Dana Statton Thompson

Infographics are one of the many visual elements that are becoming more and more prevalent in the digital arena. In this age of prolific social media postings, how well do college students understand infographics? This study surveyed two Journalism Copy Editing classes at Murray State University, in Murray, Kentucky. In both classes, students were given a pre- and post-questionnaire, which illuminated students’ visual literacy competencies and explored students' understanding about the visual elements and textual content of infographics. In both classes, the students were challenged to create their own infographic after the material had been presented. Only in the second …

Demonstration And Evaluation Of The Short-Time Compensation Program In Iowa And Oregon: Final Report, Susan Houseman, Christopher J. O'Leary, Katharine G. Abraham, Frank Bennici, Susan Labin, Richard Sigman Sep 2017

Demonstration And Evaluation Of The Short-Time Compensation Program In Iowa And Oregon: Final Report, Susan Houseman, Christopher J. O'Leary, Katharine G. Abraham, Frank Bennici, Susan Labin, Richard Sigman

Christopher J. O'Leary

Short-time compensation (STC) is an optional program within some state unemployment insurance (UI) systems that allows employers experiencing a temporary reduction in business to lower the average hours of employees in lieu of laying them off. Employer use of the STC option has been low in states with STC programs. We conducted demonstrations in Iowa and Oregon to evaluate the effectiveness of several interventions designed to increase employer awareness and use of STC, including disseminating information about STC to specific employers (members of the “treatment” group) over a 12-month period. The main findings support the hypothesis that lack of awareness …

Inferential Style, School Teachers, And Depressive Symptoms In College Students., Caroline M. Pittard, Patrick Pössel, Timothy Lau Sep 2017

Inferential Style, School Teachers, And Depressive Symptoms In College Students., Caroline M. Pittard, Patrick Pössel, Timothy Lau

Patrick Pössel

Depressive symptoms affect around half of students at some point during college. According to the hopelessness theory of depression, making negative inferences about stressful events is a vulnerability for developing depression. Negative and socio-emotional teaching behavior can be stressors that are associated with depression in school students. First-time college freshmen completed the Cognitive Style Questionnaire (CSQ), Teaching Behavior Questionnaire (TBQ), and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). While completing the TBQ, participants reported on a teacher from prior education to college. Multiple regression analysis found significant effects of the independent variables (four teaching behavior types, inferential style, and interactions …

Invisible Outsiders: Developing A Working Alliance With Appalachian Clients, Jake J. Protivnak, Cassandra G. Pusateri, Matthew J. Paylo, Kyoung Mi Choi Sep 2017

Invisible Outsiders: Developing A Working Alliance With Appalachian Clients, Jake J. Protivnak, Cassandra G. Pusateri, Matthew J. Paylo, Kyoung Mi Choi

Kyoung Choi

Appalachian clients are often ‘invisible’ within the majority culture and possess characteristics unique to the region that must be considered within the counseling relationship (Tang & Russ, 2007).  Individuals in Appalachia have higher incidences of certain mental health disorders and substance use as compared to the national average (Appalachian Regional Commission [ARC], 2008).  Although the need for mental health services is evident, limited research exists to inform mental health professionals how to deliver culturally competent interventions to build a working alliance with Appalachian clients.  The authors will discuss a framework for mental health professionals to develop a strong working alliance …

The Role Of Motivation In Complex Problem Solving, C Dominik Guess, Madison Lee Burger, Dietrich Dörner Sep 2017

The Role Of Motivation In Complex Problem Solving, C Dominik Guess, Madison Lee Burger, Dietrich Dörner

C. Dominik Guess

Previous research on Complex Problem Solving (CPS) has primarily focused on cognitive factors as outlined below. The current paper discusses the role of motivation during CPS and argues that motivation, emotion, and cognition interact and cannot be studied in an isolated manner. Motivation is the process that determines the energization and direction of behavior (Heckhausen, 1991). Three motivation theories and their relation to CPS are examined: McClelland’s achievement motivation, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and Dörner’s needs as outlined in PSI-theory. We chose these three theories for several reasons. First, space forces us to be selective. Second, the three theories are …

Comparing Business Experts And Novices In Complex Problem Solving, C Dominik Guess, Hannah Devore Edelstein, Ali Badibanga, Sandy Bartow

C. Dominik Guess

Business owners are faced with complex problems and are required to make decisions on a daily basis. The purpose of this study was to investigate complex problem solving (CPS) between experts and novices and to explore the competing theories of expert-rigidity versus expert-adaptability, as part of exploring which theory better explains crystallized intelligence. Participants were 140 business owners, business management undergraduate students and psychology students. Each participant managed a highly complex simulated chocolate company. Decisions and systems data were automatically saved in log files. Results revealed that small business owners performed best, followed by business students and then psychology students. …

Improving Dynamic Decision Making Through Training And Self-Reflection, C Dominik Guess, Sarah J. Donovan, Dag Naslund Sep 2017

Improving Dynamic Decision Making Through Training And Self-Reflection, C Dominik Guess, Sarah J. Donovan, Dag Naslund

C. Dominik Guess

The modern business environment requires managers to make effective decisions in a dynamic and uncertain world. How can such dynamic decision making (DDM) improve? The current study investigated the effects of brief training aimed at improving DDM skills in a virtual DDM task. The training addressed the DDM process, stressed the importance of self-reflection in DDM, and provided 3 self-reflective questions to guide participants during the task. Additionally, we explored whether participants low or high in self-reflection would perform better in the task and whether participants low or high in self-reflection would benefit more from the training. The study also …

Randomized Controlled Trial Of Imago Relationship Therapy: Exploring Statistical And Clinical Significance Authors:, Nathan C. Gehlert, Christopher D. Schmidt, Victoria Giegerich, Wade Luquet

Nathan C. Gehlert

For decades, couples around the world have used Imago relationship therapy (IRT) to improve their relationships. While anecdotal success stories abound, no randomized controlled trial of IRT’s impact has been accomplished until now. The authors review the results of a randomized controlled trial of distressed, treatment-seeking couples who completed 12 sessions of IRT and the impact their involvement had on their marital satisfaction. Results showed that (a) individuals in the treatment condition experienced statistically significant increases in marital satisfaction, while couples in the control group did not; (b) levels of marital satisfaction did decrease significantly from posttreatment to follow-up but …

Troubling The Functional Dysfunctional Family Binary Through The Articulation Of Functional Family Estrangement.Pdf, Jordan Allen Sep 2017

Troubling The Functional Dysfunctional Family Binary Through The Articulation Of Functional Family Estrangement.Pdf, Jordan Allen

Jordan Allen

Critical perspectives remain largely absent from the study of family communication. To interrogate the power of discourse to construct knowledges about how family is and should be, we drew on Judith Butlers poststructural theory of performativity to critically analyze the common experience of family estrangement. We argue that professional discourse performatively constructs the functional family binary by equating ongoing, open, and positive family communication with functional family identity, while constructing estrangement as unnatural, dysfunctional, and in need of intervention. We then illustrate how some individuals who self-identify as estranged from a family member troublethe functional/dysfunctional …

Cutting The Red Tape: Direct Engagement With The University And College Campus Student Body For Outreach And Programming Needs, Rachael Muszkiewicz, Jonathan Bull Sep 2017

Cutting The Red Tape: Direct Engagement With The University And College Campus Student Body For Outreach And Programming Needs, Rachael Muszkiewicz, Jonathan Bull

Rachael Muszkiewicz

This workshop discusses various ways to directly engage student patrons for outreach and programming purposes, while eliminating post-secondary administration red-tape that could hinder establishment of this programming. The presenters illustrate ways to delegate to certain students creation and promotion of library-related content for consumption by the rest of the campus community. The presenters show that engaging directly with this group of creative students, not only gives this student project experience and confidence, but frees the outreach and programming staff’s time commitment to explore additional ways to connect with the campus’ community. Going to the students directly and not relying on …

Patron Driven Programs: Successes And Lessons Learned From Turning The Library Over To Students For A Week, Mark Robison, Rachael Muszkiewicz Sep 2017

Patron Driven Programs: Successes And Lessons Learned From Turning The Library Over To Students For A Week, Mark Robison, Rachael Muszkiewicz

Rachael Muszkiewicz

While stress relief activities in academic libraries during finals weeks are nothing new, few libraries have experimented with turning the reins over to the students. Librarians at Valparaiso University initiated a two-round ideation and voting process for students to choose their own finals week programming. First, students were asked to generate ideas for the programs they wanted to see during finals week and to share them on whiteboards in the library lobby. Second, after the most prominent suggestions had been identified, students again used the whiteboards to vote for the top eight programs: four active and four passive.

Allowing students …
