You Can “Like” It On Paper Too: Reaching Digital Students Through Analog Displays, Rachael Muszkiewicz Sep 2017

You Can “Like” It On Paper Too: Reaching Digital Students Through Analog Displays, Rachael Muszkiewicz

Rachael Muszkiewicz

In response to literature on libraries as space and the Millennial generation, this chapter speaks to the importance of the academic library as both social and communal space and how to communicate with today’s college students. These case studies illustrate that students can be reached through analog displays, building an unconscious community between students as a group and students with the library. Community built within the academic library is discussed in light of these analog displays, the current library literature and via sociological positions. It is concluded that although it is thought that students want digital or online communication only, …

Implementing Augmented Reality In Academic Libraries, Sandy Avila Sep 2017

Implementing Augmented Reality In Academic Libraries, Sandy Avila

Sandy Avila

The rising popularity of augmented reality (AR) was punctuated by the Pokémon Go craze of 2016. Individuals of all ages were glued to their phones, attempting to catch creatures that displayed on their phone but were not physically in front of them. There are free and low-cost applications that libraries can use to harness the magic and create their own AR content to enhance library usability and marketing. This column explores the history of AR, explains how it works, and provides some examples of how librarians can use it to market their services and provide additional assistance to library users.

Mental Health And Psychosocial Service Needs And Utilization: Qualitative Analysis Of Key Informant And Focus Group Data From Syrian Refugees And Jordanian Nationals In The Kingdom Of Jordan

Reed M. Mueller, Ph.D.

International Medical Corps sought to enhance existing knowledge to develop a profile of coping mechanisms and help-seeking behaviors utilized among the Syrian refugee population in Jordan, along with identifying barriers to service utilization. Through this assessment, International Medical Corps also seeks to provide information that may contribute to a wider discussion as relevant national and international actors consider how to further promote Mental Health and Psychosocial Services in Jordan.

The Whole Picture: Body Posture Recognition In Infancy, Alyson J. Hock Sep 2017

The Whole Picture: Body Posture Recognition In Infancy, Alyson J. Hock

Alyson J. Chroust

Holistic image processing is tied to expertise and is characteristic of face and body processing by adults. Infants process faces holistically, but it is unknown whether infants process body information holistically. In the present study, we examined whether infants discriminate changes in body posture holistically. Body posture is an important nonverbal cue that signals emotion, intention, and goals of others even from a distance. In the current study, infants were tested for discrimination between body postures that differ in limb orientations in three conditions: in the context of the whole body, with just the limbs that change orientation, or with …

Processing Of Spatial Information In Social And Non-Social Stimuli By Opioid-Exposed And Non-Exposed Newborns, Alyson J. Hock Sep 2017

Processing Of Spatial Information In Social And Non-Social Stimuli By Opioid-Exposed And Non-Exposed Newborns, Alyson J. Hock

Alyson J. Chroust

The ability to process information from faces is important for effective social functioning. Adults are experts at this function. It has been suggested that the encoding of configural spatial relations among facial features (e.g., the distance between the eyes) contributes to this expertise. I investigated the developmental origin of face processing expertise by studying typically developing newborns’ sensitivity to the distance between the eyes and between the nose and the mouth in face stimuli. Further, I investigated whether prenatal opioid exposure is associated with neonates’ processing of spatial information in social and non-social stimuli. Infants with prenatal opioid-exposure are at …

The Use Of A Virtual Online Debating Platform To Facilitate Student Discussion Of Potentially Polarising Topics, Paul D. Mcgreevy, Vicky Tzioumis, Chris Degeling, Jane Johnson, Robert Brown, Mike Sands, Melissa J. Starling, Clive J. C. Phillips Sep 2017

The Use Of A Virtual Online Debating Platform To Facilitate Student Discussion Of Potentially Polarising Topics, Paul D. Mcgreevy, Vicky Tzioumis, Chris Degeling, Jane Johnson, Robert Brown, Mike Sands, Melissa J. Starling, Clive J. C. Phillips

Paul McGreevy, PhD

The merits of students exchanging views through the so-called human continuum exercise
(HCE) are well established. The current article describes the creation of the virtual human continuum
(VHC), an online platform that facilitates the same teaching exercise. It also reports feedback on the
VHC from veterinary science students (n = 38). First-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students
at the University of Sydney, Australia, trialed the platform and provided feedback. Most students
agreed or strongly agreed that the VHC offered: a non-threatening environment for discussing
emotive and challenging issues; and an opportunity to see how other people form ideas. It also …

Improving Operational Resiliency And Sensemaking During Crisis, Karim Hardy, Dominique Costargent Aug 2017

Improving Operational Resiliency And Sensemaking During Crisis, Karim Hardy, Dominique Costargent

Karim Hardy

Understanding the mechanisms of analysis and decision-making processes during
extreme events allows to improve an organizational state and to maintain an ideal level
of resilience through situational (re)formulations and awareness.
Studying the concepts of sensemaking altogether, situational awareness and resilience
highlight their affinities to understand their mutual influences in the construction of
organizational performance in times of crisis. This article is structured around three
objectives. Initially, it defines what sensemaking, situational awareness and resilience
are. Secondly, it intends to show how the concepts of sensemaking, situational
awareness and resilience are interconnected. Finally, regarding system dynamics, this
article attempts to underline …

Conflicting Philosophies: Two University Librarians And A Presidential Bibliophile, Meg Miner Aug 2017

Conflicting Philosophies: Two University Librarians And A Presidential Bibliophile, Meg Miner

Meg Miner

This case study explores how one personal interest of President Minor Myers, jr.—that of a life-long book collector—influenced the University’s library collections and its leaders. Myers arrived with a desire to make IWU a nationally recognized, Phi Beta Kappa–affiliated institution. As one tactic for achieving these goals, Myers actively engaged in library collection development through practices shaped by his methods of book collecting. Bulk acquisitions—through gifts-in-kind and lot purchases—and a prohibition on weeding aided in his pursuits. His vision for the library challenged the style of the first university librarian (UL) who resigned two years after Myers’ arrival. The actions …

Rumination Is Associated With Diminished Performance Monitoring, Ema Tanovic, Greg Hajack, Charles A. Sanislow Aug 2017

Rumination Is Associated With Diminished Performance Monitoring, Ema Tanovic, Greg Hajack, Charles A. Sanislow

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

Rumination is a construct that cuts across a variety of disorders, including anxiety and depression. It has been associated with deficits in cognitive control thought to confer risk for psychopathology. One aspect of cognitive control that is especially relevant to the content of ruminative thoughts is error processing. We examined the relation of rumination and 2 electrophysiological indices of error processing, error related negativity (ERN), an early index of error detection, and error positivity (Pe), a later index of error awareness. Consistent with prior work, ERN was negatively correlated with anxiety (i.e., more anxious individuals were characterized by larger ERNs). …

"Information, Risk Sharing And Incentives In Agency Problems", Jia Xie Aug 2017

"Information, Risk Sharing And Incentives In Agency Problems", Jia Xie

Jia Xie

This paper studies the use of information for incentives and risk sharing in agency problems. When the principal is risk neutral or the outcome is contractible, risk sharing is unnecessary or dealt with by a contract on the outcome. In this case, information systems are ranked only according to their informativeness about the agent's action. When the outcome is noncontractible, however, the principal has to rely on imperfect information not only for incentives, but also for risk sharing. Under the first-order approach, this paper characterizes a problem-independent ranking of information systems, relaxing Gjesdal's (1982) criterion. We also find sufficient conditions …

Response Functions, Carlos Oyarzun, Adam Sanjurjo, Hien Nguyen Aug 2017

Response Functions, Carlos Oyarzun, Adam Sanjurjo, Hien Nguyen

Carlos Oyarzun

We introduce a simple two-period adaptive-learning model to analyze how “primitive” choice behavior affects payoffs in minimal information settings, and then we conduct an experiment to observe how this behavior (thus payoffs) varies across people. Individuals choose between two uncertain payoff distributions, only knowing the support. In the first round they choose one alternative and receive a payoff. In the second round they probabilistically decide whether to choose the same alternative, or to switch. When analyzing the response function, i.e., a mapping from obtained payoffs to the probability of choosing the same alternative in the second round, we find that …

Beyond Training: Engaging Families In The Transition To Employment, John Kramer, Jennifer Bose, John Shepard

John Kramer

In spite of perceived benefits offered by trainings, it is not clear that they work well for every family. There remains a persistent gap in information and services for many families, and a further gap in employment for people with IDD. This brief summarizes findings of a scoping literature review (Kramer, Bose, & Winsor, in preparation) on the engagement of families in individuals’ employment outcomes. We explore the gaps in services, information and employment and the different engagement strategies used.

Promoting Interreligious Harmony In Myanmar: A Guide To Training And Dialogue (English & Burmese), Tatsushi Arai

Tatsushi Arai

This guidebook was designed to support training and dialogue facilitation between religious communities in Myanmar. It introduces skills and concepts useful for understanding how to approach social conflicts, how religion and conflict interact, and how to transform religiously-inspired conflicts. An earlier version of the guidebook was used to conduct a training of trainers (TOT) workshop in Yangon in February 2017, and an updated version was later used by the Buddhist and Muslim TOT participants to train diverse religious and civil society actors across Myanmar. A Burmese translation is available upon request.

Logical Form And The Vernacular Revisited, Andrew Botterell, Robert J. Stainton Aug 2017

Logical Form And The Vernacular Revisited, Andrew Botterell, Robert J. Stainton

Robert J. Stainton

We revisit a debate initiated some fifteen years ago by Ray Elugardo and Robert Stainton about the domain of arguments. Our main result is that arguments are not exclusively sets of linguistic expressions. Instead, as we put it, some non-linguistic items have ‘logical form’. The crucial examples are arguments, both deductive and inductive, made with unembedded words and phrases.

Bestiario Fronterizo: Chupacabras, Zonkeys, Vampiros Y Las Representaciones De Los Miedos Del Norte, Martín Camps

Martin Camps

Preservation For Circulating Monographs: Assessing And Adapting Practices For A Changing Information Environment, Jocelyn Boice, Daniel C. Draper, Diane B. Lunde, Ann M. Schwalm

Daniel Draper

Colorado State University Libraries has adopted a new method
for treating damaged books from the circulating collections.
Prompted by organizational change and the desire for preservation
procedures to reflect collection development priorities,
the method has evolved over several years into a workflow
that incorporates repair, withdrawal, and print or electronic
replacement. This process enables the library to make strategic
decisions about the conservation of its print collections,
enhance its electronic collections, and to more efficiently use
limited resources.

Institutional Repositories And Academic Social Networks: Competition Or Complement? A Study Of Open Access Policy Compliance Vs. Researchgate Participation, Julia A. Lovett, Andrée J. Rathemacher, Divana Boukari, Corey Lang

Julia Lovett

INTRODUCTION The popularity of academic social networks like ResearchGate and Academia.edu indicates that scholars want to share their work, yet for universities with open access (OA) policies, these sites may be competing with institutional repositories (IRs) for content. This article seeks to reveal researcher practices, attitudes, and motivations around uploading their work to ResearchGate and complying with an institutional OA Policy through a study of faculty at the University of Rhode Island (URI). METHODS We conducted a population study to examine the participation by 558 full-time URI faculty members in the OA Policy and ResearchGate followed by a survey of …

Trait Hope And Preparation For Future Care Needs Among Older Adult Primary Care Patients, Jodi L. Southerland, Deborah L. Slawson, Robert Pack, Silvia Sörensen, Jeffrey M. Lyness, Jameson K. Hirsch Aug 2017

Trait Hope And Preparation For Future Care Needs Among Older Adult Primary Care Patients, Jodi L. Southerland, Deborah L. Slawson, Robert Pack, Silvia Sörensen, Jeffrey M. Lyness, Jameson K. Hirsch

Jameson K. Hirsch

We examined associations between trait hope and preparation for future care needs (PFCN) among 66 older adult primary care patients in western New York. Participants completed a questionnaire assessing PFCN (awareness, information gathering, decision-making, concrete planning, and avoidance), and the Adult Trait Hope Scale. In multivariate regressions, lower hope, particularly less agency, was associated with more awareness of needing care, whereas higher hopefulness, particularly pathways thinking, was associated with increased decision-making and concrete planning. Greater hopefulness appears to be linked to goal-directed planning behaviors, although those with lower hope may actually be more aware of the need for planning. Evidence-based …

Basic Psychological Needs, Suicidal Ideation, And Risk For Suicidal Behavior In Young Adults, Peter C. Britton, Kimberly A. Van Orden, Jameson K. Hirsch, Geoffrey C. Williams

Jameson K. Hirsch

Associations between the satisfaction of basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness with current suicidal ideation and risk for suicidal behavior were examined. Two logistic regressions were conducted with a cross-sectional database of 440 university students to examine the association of need satisfaction with suicidal ideation and risk for suicidal behavior, while controlling for demographics and depressive symptoms. Suicidal ideation was reported by 15% of participants and 18% were found to be at risk for suicidal behavior. A one standard deviation increase in need satisfaction reduced the odds of suicidal ideation by 53%, OR (95% CI) = 0.47 (0.33–0.67), …

The Al-Qaeda Organization And The Islamic State Organization: History, Doctrine, Modus, Operandi, And U.S Policy To Degrade And Defeat Terrorism Conducted In The Name Of Sunni Islam, Paul Kamolnick Aug 2017

The Al-Qaeda Organization And The Islamic State Organization: History, Doctrine, Modus, Operandi, And U.S Policy To Degrade And Defeat Terrorism Conducted In The Name Of Sunni Islam, Paul Kamolnick

Paul Kamolnick

The al-Qaeda Organization (AQO) and the Islamic State Organization (ISO) are transnational adversaries that conduct terrorism in the name of Sunni Islam. It is declared U.S. Government (USG) policy to degrade, defeat, and destroy them. The present book has been written to assist policymakers, military planners, strategists, and professional military educators whose mission demands a deep understanding of strategically-relevant differences between these two transnational terrorist entities. In it, one shall find a careful comparative analysis across three key strategically relevant dimensions: essential doctrine, beliefs, and worldview; strategic concept, including terrorist modus operandi; and specific implications and recommendations for current USG …

Delegitimizing Al-Qaeda: A Jihad-Realist Approach, Paul Kamolnick Aug 2017

Delegitimizing Al-Qaeda: A Jihad-Realist Approach, Paul Kamolnick

Paul Kamolnick

Disrupting, dismantling, and ultimately defeating al-Qaeda based and inspired terrorism is a declared policy of the U.S. Government. Three key strategic objectives have been identified for accomplishing this: attacking al-Qaeda’s terror network, undermining radicalization and recruitment, and hardening homeland defense. The present monograph proposes a distinct "jihad-realist" approach for undermining radicalization and recruitment to al-Qaeda. First, a brief discussion of six means for ending terrorist organizations is provided. Second, the premises of a jihad-realist approach are described. Third, a jihad-realist shari’a case against al-Qaeda’s terrorism is presented. In conclusion, key assertions are summarized, and several specific policy recommendations offered for …
