Endorsement Of Formal Leaders: An Integrative Model, H. Andrew Michener, Edward J. Lawler
Endorsement Of Formal Leaders: An Integrative Model, H. Andrew Michener, Edward J. Lawler
Edward J Lawler
This experiment develops an integrative, path-analytic model for the endorsement accorded formal leaders. The model contains four independent variables reflecting aspects of group structure (i.e., group success-failure, the payoff distribution, the degree of support by others members for the leader, and the vulnerability of the leader). Also included are two intervening variables reflecting perceptual processes (attributed competence and attributed fairness), and one dependent variable (endorsement). The results indicate that endorsement is greater when the group's success is high, when the payoff distribution is flat rather than hierarchical, and when the leader is not vulnerable to removal from office. Other support …

Comparison Of Dependence And Punitive Forms Of Power, Edward J. Lawler, Samuel B. Bacharach
Comparison Of Dependence And Punitive Forms Of Power, Edward J. Lawler, Samuel B. Bacharach
Edward J Lawler
This paper deals with the impact of power on tactical action in conflict. The theory and research is organized around two conceptual distinctions: one between power based on dependence versus punitive capability, and the other between relative power (i.e., power difference) and "total power" in a relationship (i.e., across actors). The paper will argue that these distinctions are important on both theoretical and empirical grounds. Theoretically, they are important to explicate the connection between conceptions of power that stress the coercive foundation of power (Bierstedt 1950; Tedeschi, Schlenker & Bonoma 1973) and those that treat power as dependence (Bacharach & …
Disordered Or [Ab]Normal Eating In Pregnancy, Amy Bannatyne, Peta Stapleton, Roger Hughes, Bruce Watt
Disordered Or [Ab]Normal Eating In Pregnancy, Amy Bannatyne, Peta Stapleton, Roger Hughes, Bruce Watt
Peta B. Stapleton
Introduction: Pregnancy is a powerful biopsychosocial event that involves a multitude of rapid changes to a woman’s body, eating patterns, social functioning, and self identity – most of which are largely outside her control. Although it is well known that eating disorders and disordered eating disproportionally affect young women often during childbearing years, historically, scientific understanding of the intersection between pregnancy and eating disorders has been poor. Overall, it is known that pregnancy can impact an eating disorder in three main ways: 1) Pregnancy may function as a catalyst for remission 2) Pregnancy may exacerbate existing ED symptoms 3) Pregnancy …
Silk Roads Of The Twenty-First Century: The Cultural Dimension, Rosita Dellios
Silk Roads Of The Twenty-First Century: The Cultural Dimension, Rosita Dellios
Rosita Dellios
Much has been written about China’s grand project of the twenty-first century, the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road—or the Belt and Road Initiative. It is set to lift living standards through the provision of infrastructure and better connectivity where these are lacking. While economic re-sources are enumerated, and the maps of roads and corridors have been drafted, the cultural dimension is understudied. Beijing has not helped in this regard. Apart from vague slogans like ‘win–win cooperation’, ‘mutual respect’ and ‘community of common destiny’, there has been no concerted effort to showcase China’s thought culture …

A vision to further national development through higher education now informs planning for the University for Business and Technology (UBT) Knowledge Center. At its essence, the Center aims to make local knowledge visible through furthering discovery of and access to research content produced by academic students and university professors on institutional, local, and international levels. This paper reports on conceptual exploration of this institutional idea during spring semester 2017 in a graduate course on systems sciences. Using active learning pedagogy to improve local situations, an international teaching team facilitated student and stakeholder engagement in participatory design activities using systems thinking …

The most significant innovation enables the realization of far greater human potential. The catalyst of such creativity in higher education is the acquisition of new knowledge and the living of new experiences. Then, within innovation and incubation environments, new thinking enriches knowledge handed down from previous generations, enlivens contemporary lives and informs future growth. Emergent knowledge encourages recognition of the limitations of traditional academic disciplines, exploration of new interdisciplinary frontiers, and, from this, novel transdisciplinary insights that unlock human potential and improve human conditions. In response, the University for Business and Technology intends to build collaboration environments to enable discovery …

In 2002, OhioLINK’s consortia of libraries recognized the need to restructure and standardize the metadata used in the OhioLINK Digital Media Center as a step in the development of a general purpose digital object re-pository. The authors explore the concept of digital object repositories and mechanisms used to develop complex data structures in a cooperative environment, report the findings and recommendations of the OhioLINK Data-base Management and Standards Committee (DMSC) Metadata Task Force, and identify lessons learned, ad-dressing data structures as well as data content standards. A significant result of the work was the creation of the OhioLINK Digital Media …

Navigating The Political Waters Of Open Access Publishing In Libraries, Carol Ann Borchert, Charlene N. Simser, Wendy C. Robertson
Wendy C Robertson
In recent years, many libraries have forayed into the world of open access (OA) publishing. While it marks a major shift in the mission of libraries to move from providing access to content to generating and creating content ourselves, it still involves the same basic values regarding access to information. The environment has changed, and libraries are adapting with new approaches and new staff skills to promote these fundamental values. The authors selected nineteen libraries and conducted phone interviews with a specific list of questions, encouraging discussion about how each library approached being a publisher. This chapter examines the politics …

Getting Titles Into Link Resolvers, Wendy C. Robertson
Wendy C Robertson
Libraries rely on link resolvers to connect faculty and students to subscribed/licensed content. Having titles in link resolvers and in discover systems is a way people learn to find quality content. It is important that the library published titles are included in link resolvers. This presentation will give an overview of KBART (Knowledge Bases and Related Tools), GOKb, Knowledge Base+, and the experience of a library publisher getting titles into link revolver systems. Attendees will learn how to submit their content to link resolvers.

Mind The Gap: Curating Digital Commons Metadata For Share, Lisa Palmer, Emily Stenberg, Wendy C. Robertson, Joanne Paterson
Wendy C Robertson
The goal of the SHARE initiative, a partnership between the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Center for Open Science (COS), is to build a “free, open, data set about research and scholarly activities across their life cycle.” As of October 12, 2016, 129 repositories and publishers have made metadata available to SHARE for harvesting, and the aggregated data set is available for searching. Many metadata providers are institutional repositories utilizing the bepress Digital Commons platform whose metadata is harvested through the OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) protocol for repository interoperability. As part of the 2016-2017 …
Can Student Assistants Effectively Provide Chat Reference Services? Student Transcripts Vs. Librarian Transcripts, Vera J. Lux, Linda Rich
Can Student Assistants Effectively Provide Chat Reference Services? Student Transcripts Vs. Librarian Transcripts, Vera J. Lux, Linda Rich
Vera J Lux
To determine if undergraduate student information desk assistants were effectively staffing the library's chat reference service, librarians at Bowling Green State University embarked on a chat transcript analysis project, comparing the performance of librarians to student assistants. Although student desk assistants generally did not perform as well as librarians, it was concluded that with a renewed emphasis on continual oversight and training, students were a very viable option for staffing a chat reference service.

The impact of theater is traditionally discussed in the emotion someone feels from seeing a live show on stage or the nostalgia of remembering the experience of seeing one’s favorite movie come to life for the first time. Theaters are one of a city’s most beautiful treasures, often constructed with high levels of architectural appeal which can take audiences out of their normal life and lead them into the world of the performance. However, besides beautiful buildings and fond memories, what is the impact of the theater sector on a region? This study uses a quantitative framework to examine the …
New Evidence On State Fiscal Multipliers: Implications For State Policies, Timothy J. Bartik
New Evidence On State Fiscal Multipliers: Implications For State Policies, Timothy J. Bartik
Timothy J. Bartik
When state and local governments engage in balanced budget changes in taxes and spending, what fiscal multiplier effects do such policies have on creating local jobs? Traditionally, the view has been that possible job-creation effects of such state and local “demand-side” policies are smaller, second-order effects. Such effects might be worthwhile to take into consideration when a state or local government balances its budget during a recession, but the effects were believed to be of modest magnitude, and not of major importance for more general state and local public policies. However, recent estimates of fiscal multiplier effects of state and …

Evidence suggests that public opinion has a significant and measurable impact on legislative, executive, and citizen interaction. The state of Idaho is no exception. In this white paper, we examine a sample of the opinions of Idahoans, as expressed in the Public Policy Survey, on the subject of immigration. In the 18th and 19th Annual Idaho Public Policy Surveys, the survey sample was asked to respond to a number of questions concerning immigration in Idaho. Questions on the survey ranged from economic impacts to the quality of education to indigent medical care. Of the many benefits that the data offers, …
