Developments in the law are making the corporate form more opaque and allowing the agents who animate it to escape individual accountability for their actions. The law now provides protection for agents to engage in widespread frauds that inflict massive harm on the public. This article challenges the academic orthodoxy that shareholder and director liability are enough to control agent behavior by developing a paper dragon analogy to focus on the importance of agents in corporate animation. Lack of agent accountability encourages the patterns of fraud that caused the financial crisis in which forty-five percent of the world’s wealth disappeared, …

Heroism And The Pursuit Of Meaning, Jeff D. Green, Daryl R. Van Tongeren, Athena H. Cairo, Nao Hagiwara
Scott T. Allison
We propose that essential components of heroism and heroic actions are embedded in meaning and virtue. That is, our central thesis is that heroes and heroic behavior are intertwined with virtue and with finding meaning or purpose in life. Abraham Lincoln is an archetypal hero. We argue that it was his singular commitment to the cause of reunifying north and south, and finding his life purpose in this cause, that sustained his efforts and forged a hero. Moreover, his virtuous character likely conferred additional meaning to him and elevated his actions to the heroic; his “greatness combined with goodness” was …

The Hero Organism: Advancing The Embodiment Of Heroism Thesis In The Twenty-First Century, Olivia Efthimiou
Scott T. Allison
Heroic accounts have captured the human imagination throughout history. In postmodern times the academic community has witnessed a resurgence in the intellectual and empirical pursuit of the concept of heroism—the advent of the multiple disciplinary field of heroism science signals the end of the monopoly of myth, fiction and popular culture on the study of heroism, offering a multi-perspective lens for the active and rigorous observation of this enduring phenomenon. Research efforts to date, however, have largely focused on its psychosocial aspects, without addressing the interaction with and relationship to the body in sufficient depth. This chapter aims to contribute …

The purpose of this study was to explore emotional intelligence at the School of Social Work at the University of Iowa. Emotional intelligence can be described as understanding, regulating, and recognizing emotions. Social workers have emotionally tolling, stressful jobs where emotional intelligence would be utilized. There is not much research about emotional intelligence in the social work field, so this study looks at emotional intelligence scores of those enrolled at the School of Social Work at the University of Iowa. It was hypothesized that (1) participants would have higher emotional intelligence than the general population; (2) MSW students would score …

Market Mediators And The Tradeoffs Of Legitimacy-Seeking Behaviors In A Nascent Category, Brandon Lee, Shon Hiatt, Michael Lounsbury

Although existing research has demonstrated the importance of attaining legitimacy for new market categories, few scholars have considered the tradeoffs associated with such actions. Using the U.S. organic food product category as a context, we explore how one standards-based certification organization—the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF)—sought to balance efforts to legitimate a nascent market category with retaining a shared, distinctive identity among its members. Our findings suggest that legitimacy-seeking behaviors undertaken by the standards organization diluted the initial collective identity and founding ethos of its membership. However, by shifting the meaning of organic from the producer to the product, CCOF …

In this chapter, we review theory and research that attempts to unlock the appeal of the under- dog. As we will show, while there is plenty of evidence for the powerful draw of underdogs, there is as of yet no consensus about the cause of this appeal. We will also speculate on the conceptual simi- larities and differences between rooting for underdogs and judging people as heroes.

Career Development And A Sense Of Calling: Contexts For Heroism, Bryan J. Dik, Adelyn B. Shimizu, William O'Connor
Scott T. Allison
This chapter explores the connection between heroism and career development. In it, we make the case that a person’s career decisions and sense of calling often function to create the context in which heroic acts occur. After a conceptual and theoretical overview, we articulate possible pathways that may influence the connections between heroism and career development, and propose new directions for scholars to explore.

Scott T. Allison
What is the relationship between sexuality and leadership? What comes to mind first are vivid instances where individuals, thought to be acting as trusted stewards of their constituents’ best interests, become embroiled in a sex-related scandal. It is not hard to find examples of leaders whose careers and notable accomplishments are tarnished permanently by one revealed indiscretion. Technically, although guilty of marital infidelity, Bill Clinton’s crime with regard to Monica Lewinsky was not the affair but charges of perjury that stemmed from lying about the affair. Of course, he only lied because he knew there would be a scandal if …

The Lactating Man, Mathilde Cohen

Lactation and breastfeeding are typically viewed as inherently female activities. Evolutionary biology designates females as the generators of the mammalian class’ milk supply. The assumption is that only female mammals lactate and, therefore, only female mammals nurse their own. Taking on the biological, social, and cultural aspects of male lactation, this chapter questions this gender normativity of milk. It argues that male lactation can be seen along a continuum, from the literal production of milk by a small number of mammals of the male sex, to male-identified parents and caregivers breastfeeding their children, to males’ role in shaping breastfeeding norms …

Defenders of suburban sprawl argue, however, that compact development may actually increase pollution in a variety of ways. This article criticizes the latter argument.,

Provosts' Perceptions Of Academic Library Value & Preferences For Communication: A National Study, Adam Murray, Ashley Ireland
Ashley Ireland
While many studies have been conducted under the auspices of calculating academic library value, there are no large-scale studies into the perceptions that college or university provosts have of library value, nor are there studies into how provosts prefer library value data to be communicated. This study addresses that gap through a national survey of public and private university provosts/chief academic officers, with attention to size of the institution, accrediting agency, and the status of librarians at the institution. An understanding of provosts’ perceptions of library value and preferences for communication aid library directors as they seek to leverage the …

The ability to accurately identify scholarly authors is central to bibliometric analysis. Efforts to disambiguate author names using algorithms or national or societal registries become less effective with increases in the number of publications from China and other nations where shared and similar names are prevalent. This work analyzes the adoption and integration of an open source, cross-national identification system, the Open Researcher and Contributor ID system (ORCID), in Web of Science metadata. Results at the article level show greater adoption, to date, of the ORCID identifier in Europe as compared with Asia and the US. Focusing analysis on individual highly …

Review Of _Harmonic Grammar And Harmonic Serialism_, Eric Baković
Eric Baković
Harmonic Grammar and Harmonic Serialism (henceforth HGHS) consists of thirteen chapters addressing matters of empirical, theoretical, and typological concern to Harmonic Grammar (HG) and Harmonic Serialism (HS). As the editors note in their preface, HG and HS are "in some ways relatives of OT [Optimality Theory] in that they incorporate much of its structure (e.g. candidate comparison by markedness and faithfulness constraints)," except that "HS questions the choice of parallel over serial evaluations, while HG questions the assumption that constraints are ranked rather than weighted." Anyone interested in an introduction to and further developments within either HG or HS, …

In his exceptional survey of current big data methods in the social sciences, Kitchin (2014) describes the current state of affairs as a “data deluge”. Indeed, the diluvian metaphors of flood and deluge abound in our current computational culture, as we surf the dynamic surface of a seemingly inhuman quantity of data. Kitchin (2014) emphasizes the challenges and opportunities for researchers in the social sciences as they delve into this deluge. In the digital datafication of life and learning, the impact on education can already be felt, but has yet to be adequately theorized; there is a growing need for …

Communicating Library Impact On Retention: A Framework For Developing Reciprocal Value Propositions, Adam Murray, Ashley P. Ireland
Ashley Ireland
This article explores the trends identified in a survey of library directors on efforts to document and communicate library contributions to student retention. Library deans/directors have little in the way of communication methods for sharing library impact on retention. Methods that are used tend to be unidirectional in nature. Based on these results, this article also presents a framework of stakeholder markets and examples of reciprocal value propositions library leaders could develop around library contributions to retention efforts. This in turn can assist with advocacy and the communication of academic library value to university leaders and other higher education stakeholders.

A Case Study In Rural Community Economic Development: Hill County Health & Wellness Center, Lisa R. Pruitt

This short article was written for a symposium issue on the role of law and lawyers in community economic development. The symposium issue arose from an AALS 2017 Discussion Group session about whether “law matters” in the context of community economic development and, if so, how and why law matters. The case study presented here is about a rural community health care center, Hill Country Health and Wellness, in far northern California’s Shasta County. The case study tracks the use—or lack thereof—of lawyers by the center’s founder and principal, and it discusses these phenomena against a backdrop of rural lack …

Decriminalized Prostitution: Impunity For Violence And Exploitation, Melanie Shapiro Esq, Donna M. Hughes Dr.

This paper is a case study of decriminalized prostitution. For 29 years (1980 to 2009) prostitution was decriminalized in Rhode Island. Lack of laws or regulations created a permissive legal, economic and cultural environment for the growth of sex businesses. During this time, sexual exploitation and violence against women and girls were integrated into the economic development of urban areas. The number of sex businesses grew rapidly during this time period. Organized crime groups operated brothels and extorted money from adult entertainment businesses. Rhode Island became a destination for pimps, traffickers, and other violent criminals. The lack of laws impeded …
