For a sustainable and integrated planning of the sea space across the Baltic Sea region, planners and stakeholders have to be engaged in holistic, pan-Baltic thinking where the whole Baltic Sea is considered as one ecosystem and one planning space. However MSP related experiences so far shows that interests are often expressed from one sector or one national or regional perspective only. There is a lack of information exchange between the different maritime sectors as well MSP support structures (i.e. data providers and researchers) and spatial planners. And at the same time there is insufficient communication within the sectors at …

Oil Spill Preparedness In The Baltic Sea Countries, Jonas Pålsson May 2016

Oil Spill Preparedness In The Baltic Sea Countries, Jonas Pålsson

Jonas Pålsson

The Baltic Sea is one of the world’s busiest waterways. An estimated 9 % of the world’s trade and 11 % of the world’s oil transportation passes through Baltic waters. It is estimated that this will increase by 64 % between 2003 and 2020. For example, the oil transportation has increased by 133 % between 1997 and 2008 and is now over 250 million tonnes per year. Plenty of shallows and narrow passages make parts of the Baltic Sea difficult to navigate. There are around 130 accidents each year, with 10 of these leading to pollution, mostly of oil. The …

Distinctly Cleveland: How The Arts Are Helping To Revitalize Rust Belt Cities, Gregory M. Sadlek, Joan Chase

Gregory M Sadlek

This book addresses many of the common reasons why the so-called “Rust Belt” cities suffered decline and the many solutions proposed and efforts already undertaken that seek to reverse the decline and spur rejuvenation. The contributors discuss the reasons for the decline including globalization, energy policy–related issues, and even the impact of air conditioning on location decisions. They also detail many of the entrepreneurial efforts undertaken in cities like Cleveland that are helping to reinvigorate once-depressed areas, offer suggestions related to investments in workforce training and current energy policy, critique the use of economic development subsidies, discuss the success of …

In the sunset of the 1990s and beginning of the Millennium, historic designation of properties has become an important tool increasingly used to preserve cultural heritage, revive central-city neighborhoods, and stimulate community economic development. Many academic studies illustrated that historic preservation has a positive impact on property values (Zahirovic-Herbert and Chatterjee, 2010; Leicheanko et al., 1999; Clark and Herrin, 1997; Schaeffer and Millerick, 1991).1 Since 2005, historic preservation became part of the sustainable growth concept emphasizing property values, the reuse of historic buildings, integration of culture and multi-functional landscapes, and environmental stewardship. There is a scarcity of literature measuring direct …

Collaborating Across Campus And The Community To Create Open Textbooks, Rebel Cummings-Sauls

Rebel Cummings-Sauls

The Open/Alternative Textbook Initiative at K-State began and has been sustained through numerous collaborations. Sparking from collaboration between various faculty, including the Scholarly Communication Librarian, for support, and the libraries and students for first year funding, the initiative began through strong partnership. This partnership grew to include participating faculty, student government, Libraries’ Center for the Advancement of Digital Scholarship, and the President and Provost’s Office. Through this collaborative support on campus we have received our first community partners who provided funding to the initiative. Through this initiative we have been able to reach out to faculty who applied to create …

Toward A Positive And Dynamic Theory Of Leadership Development, D. Scott Derue, Kristina Workman May 2016

Toward A Positive And Dynamic Theory Of Leadership Development, D. Scott Derue, Kristina Workman

Kristina Workman

In this chapter, we draw from the literature on positive organizational scholarship to inform and extend current theories and research on leadership development in organizational settings. Specifically, we highlight the value of a strengths-based approach to leadership development, draw attention to the emergence of positive cycles of leadership development, and emphasize the role of high-quality relationships and connections in facilitating leadership development. Our hope is that these theoretical insights provide the basis for new theory on cultivating extraordinary leadership capacity in organizations and stimulate future research on the positive and dynamic processes involved in leadership development.

Digital resources have provided the opportunity to expand services. In 2014 Providence Health & Services libraries embarked on creating a shared web portal for the large not-for-profit health system that spans 5 states. Faced with legacy web portals, limited resources, and mandated technical requirements, the system-wide library aimed to create a new universal web portal to serve our mobile savvy patrons. Methods: An assessment of the current digital landscape uncovered many information gaps. These included hospitals with no library website, resources controlled by a librarian gatekeeper, out of date holdings, and challenging interfaces. Using user feedback and staff expertise, the …

Exploring The Relationship Between Agricultural Electricity Consumption And Output: New Evidence From Turkish Regional Data, Eyup Dogan, Maamar Sebri, Berna Turkekul

Maamar Sebri

This study investigates the relationship between agricultural electricity consumption and agricultural output for a panel of 12 regions of Turkey for the period 1995–2013. In order to reveal the possible heterogeneity between regions, empirical analyses are conducted for the whole panel data and two sub-groups within the panel data; namely, coastal regions and non-coastal regions. The results from several panel unit root tests indicate that electricity consumption and output are stationary process at their levels for overall panel and the two specific groups. By using the OLS with regional fixed effects, this study finds that coefficient estimate of electricity consumption …

Laterality Influences Cognitive Performance In Rainbowfish Melanotaenia Duboulayi, Anne-Laurence Bibost, Culum Brown May 2016

Laterality Influences Cognitive Performance In Rainbowfish Melanotaenia Duboulayi, Anne-Laurence Bibost, Culum Brown

Culum Brown, PhD

Cerebral lateralization has been suggested to convey a selective advantage to individuals by enhancing their cognitive abilities. Few, however, have explicitly compared the cognitive ability of animals with strongly contrasting laterality. Here, we examined the influence of laterality on learning performance in the crimson spotted rainbowfish, Melanotaenia duboulayi, using a classical conditioning paradigm. We also compared the learning ability of wild caught and captive-reared fish to examine the influence of rearing environment on cognitive performance. Laterality was established by observing which eye fish preferred to use while viewing their mirror image. Subjects were then conditioned to associate the appearance of …

Cue Choice And Spatial Learning Ability Are Affected By Habitat Complexity In Intertidal Gobies, Gemma E. White, Culum Brown May 2016

Cue Choice And Spatial Learning Ability Are Affected By Habitat Complexity In Intertidal Gobies, Gemma E. White, Culum Brown

Culum Brown, PhD

Variation in the structural complexity of a habitat is known to have significant affects on the evolution of different populations and can shape behavior, morphology, and life-history traits. Here, we investigated whether habitat complexity influences a species’ capacity for spatial learning and cue choice by comparing the performance of 4 goby species from 2 contrasting habitats in a spatial task. Gobies were collected from dynamic, homogenous sandy shores and stable, spatially complex rock pool habitats. We trained fish to use a T-maze to find a hidden reward and asked whether they used local visual landmarks or body-centered methods for orientation …

Student: I can’t find this article in the databases (she shows you a citation).
You: Oh, this citation is for a book. Let’s check the catalog.

Helping students understand citations seems to be an on-going activity, but learning about citations can be boring and requires attention to detail. In order to address this problem, we created a fun tutorial using drag-and-drop technology that can be used in an online environment or in the classroom. The tutorial helps students identify the elements of a citation, place them in the correct order, and …

Bullying At The Fire Station? Perceptions Based On Gender, Race And Sexual Orientation, John C. Griffith, Donna L. Roberts, Ronald T. Wakeham

Donna L. Roberts

Discrimination and strained co-worker relationships based on gender, race or sexual orientation are forms of bullying in the workplace. This research examines firefighter perceptions with regard to bullying as defined above. Survey questions were based on the National Report Card on Women and Firefighting study (Hulett, Bendick, Thomas & Miccio, 2008). The web-based survey was distributed through the National Fire Academy Training, Resources and Data Exchange Network, (TRADENET). Findings from 113 completed surveys indicated that most firefighters did not perceive bullying issues were pervasive in the fire service. However there were large differences in perception between female and male firefighters. …

Fish Pain: An Inconvenient Truth, Culum Brown May 2016

Fish Pain: An Inconvenient Truth, Culum Brown

Culum Brown, PhD

Whether fish feel pain is a hot political topic. The consequences of our denial are huge given the billions of fish that are slaughtered annually for human consumption. The economic costs of changing our commercial fishery harvest practices are also likely to be great. Key outlines a structure-function analogy of pain in humans, tries to force that template on the rest of the vertebrate kingdom, and fails. His target article has so far elicited 34 commentaries from scientific experts from a broad range of disciplines; only three of these support his position. The broad consensus from the scientific community is …
