Oil Spill Preparedness In Sweden : Prevention, Planning, And Response For Large Accidents, Jonas Pålsson May 2016

Oil Spill Preparedness In Sweden : Prevention, Planning, And Response For Large Accidents, Jonas Pålsson

Jonas Pålsson

This dissertation has analysed the Swedish oil spill preparedness between 2010 and 2015 by examining management, prevention, planning and response, and compared it to international practices. The study is based on analysis of available data, surveys administered to the coastal County Administrative Boards and municipalities, and interviews with the national oil spill experts.

Oil spills can cause significant acute damage to the environment. Sweden has a long coastline with intense shipping traffic. This suggests a high risk of a large oil spill occurring, but no oil spill over 1,200 tonnes has affected the Swedish territorial waters or Exclusive Economic Zone. …

Big Data, Little Data, No Data – Who Is In Charge Of Data Quality?, Christine L. Borgman, Andrea Scharnhorst May 2016

Big Data, Little Data, No Data – Who Is In Charge Of Data Quality?, Christine L. Borgman, Andrea Scharnhorst

Christine L. Borgman

The more value that is placed on research data as a commodity to be shared, sustained, and reused, the greater the need to assure the quality of those data. Data repositories—whether domain-specific or generic across domains—are essential gatekeepers of data sustainability. Data quality is a consideration throughout the research process. To what extent should responsibility for assuring data quality be the responsibility of the investigators; of publishers, editors, and peer reviewers; of data repositories; of data librarians or data scientists; or of later reusers of those data? Considerations for data quality vary throughout the lifecycle of data handling. These questions …

In the last decade, texting and driving has evolved into a serious problem among the adolescent population. The goal of this study was to determine if education can effectively raise awareness of the dangers of texting and driving and positively influence the behavior of rural West Virginia teens. A 25 question survey designed to asses teen driving behavior was administered to 143 rural West Virginia high school students before and after and educational session. The educational session was designed to explain how texting and driving impairs driving ability and show graphic images of accidents and injuries that resulted from this …

Anything Can Happen In The Zone: Library And Departmental Change Driven By Migration To A Cloud-Based Library Management System, Josh Petrusa May 2016

Anything Can Happen In The Zone: Library And Departmental Change Driven By Migration To A Cloud-Based Library Management System, Josh Petrusa

Josh Petrusa

Butler University Libraries had already made progressive changes in public services areas, but Technical Services remained unchanged and bound to legacy practices from decades past. For us, the best catalyst for change was a system migration to a cloud-based type of management system. This system migration was tied to organizational restructuring and a new strategic plan, each of which intertwined with the details of the migration project and was underpinned by thoughtful analysis of how to help employees through change. Details of the migration are discussed in relation to how they inspired departmental and organizational change through updated technology.

How many times have you participated in this scenario?

Student: I can’t find this article in the databases (she shows you a citation).
You: Oh, this citation is for a book. Let’s check the catalog.

Helping students understand citations seems to be an on-going activity, but learning about citations can be boring and requires attention to detail. In order to address this problem, we created a fun tutorial using drag-and-drop technology that can be used in an online environment or in the classroom. The tutorial helps students identify the elements of a citation, place them in the correct order, and …

Vigilance And Antipredator Responses Of Caribbean Reef Squid, Jennifer A. Mather May 2016

Vigilance And Antipredator Responses Of Caribbean Reef Squid, Jennifer A. Mather

Jennifer Mather, PhD

Antipredator responses, especially those of open-ocean squid, have been seldom studied in the natural environment. Sepioteuthis sepioidea, observed by snorkellers near the shore in early morning/late afternoon, produced an average of eight moves of over 1m per hour, apparently mostly antipredator behaviours. Close approaches by herbivorous parrotfish elicited no response in 74% of encounters; otherwise, squid produced agonistic zebra stripes or startle-mantle-dots skin patterns. Predatory bar jack fish caused flight but not zebra displays, and squid usually paled and fled quickly (66%) from snapper. The speed of approach was the best predictor for flight and display responses to snapper, …

Squid Dances: An Ethogram Of Postures And Actions Of Sepioteuthis Sepioidea Squid With A Muscular Hydrostatic System, Jennifer A. Mather, Ulrike Griebel, Ruth A. Byrne May 2016

Squid Dances: An Ethogram Of Postures And Actions Of Sepioteuthis Sepioidea Squid With A Muscular Hydrostatic System, Jennifer A. Mather, Ulrike Griebel, Ruth A. Byrne

Jennifer Mather, PhD

A taxonomy of the movement possibilities for any species, within the constraints of its neural and skeletal systems, should be one of the foundations of the study of its behaviour. Caribbean reef squid, Sepioteuthis sepioidea, appear to have many degrees of freedom in their movement as they live in a three-dimensional habitat and have no fixed skeleton but rather a muscular hydrostatic one. Within this apparent lack of constraints, there are regularities and patterns of common occurrences that allow this article to describe an ethogram of the movements, postures and positions of squid. Squid have a combination of bent, …

Individual Prey Choices Of Octopuses: Are They Generalist Or Specialist?, Jennifer A. Mather, Tatiana S. Leite, Allan T. Batista May 2016

Individual Prey Choices Of Octopuses: Are They Generalist Or Specialist?, Jennifer A. Mather, Tatiana S. Leite, Allan T. Batista

Jennifer Mather, PhD

Prey choice is often evaluated at the species or population level. Here, we analyzed the diet of octopuses of different populations with the aim to assess the importance of individual feeding habits as a factor affecting prey choice. Two methods were used, an assessment of the extent to which an individual octopus made choices of species representative of those population (PSi and IS) and 25% cutoff values for number of choices and percentage intake of individual on their prey. In one population of Octopus cf vulgaris in Bermuda individuals were generalist by IS=0.77, but most chose many prey of the …

Exploration And Habituation In Intact Free Moving Octopus Vulgaris, Jennifer Mather May 2016

Exploration And Habituation In Intact Free Moving Octopus Vulgaris, Jennifer Mather

Jennifer Mather, PhD

Despite the huge numbers of studies published on the learning of cephalopod mollusks, studies on non-associative learning are scarce. We tested non-associative learning (habituation) and exploration in Octopus vulgaris in two different studies using a prey-shaped object (Study A) and inanimate objects and food objects (Study B). Study A consisted of the repeated presentation of a prey-like stimulus, which 23 subjects could only explore visually. In study B, 14 octopuses were presented two Lego blocks (one black and white with a smooth surface, one a blue "snowflake" with a rough surface) and two food items, one preferred (clams) and one …

Octopus Insularis (Octopodidae), Evidences Of A Specialized Predator And A Time-Minimizing Hunter, Tatiana S. Leite, Manuel Haimovici, Jennifer A. Mather May 2016

Octopus Insularis (Octopodidae), Evidences Of A Specialized Predator And A Time-Minimizing Hunter, Tatiana S. Leite, Manuel Haimovici, Jennifer A. Mather

Jennifer Mather, PhD

Shallow-water octopuses have been reported as major predators of motile species in benthonic marine communities, capturing their prey by different foraging techniques. This study assessed for the first time the feeding ecology, foraging behavior, and defensive strategy during foraging, including the use of body patterns, to construct a general octopus foraging strategy in a shallow water-reef system. Octopus insularis was studied in situ using visual observations and video recordings. The diet included at least 55 species of crustaceans (70%), bivalves (17.5%), and gastropods (12.5%); however, only four species accounted for half of the occurrences: the small crabs Pitho sp. (26.8%) …

.Issues Of Editorial Control, Prior Restraint, And Prior Review Facing Student Newspapers On Public University Campuses In Ohio: Administrative, Faculty, And Student Perspectives (With David M. Lucas), Terry L. Hapney Jr., David Lucas

Terry L. Hapney Jr., Ph.D.

Recent headlines illustrate that the struggle continues between student journalists and administrators on public university campuses nationwide. The back and forth centers on student journalists’ objective of reporting on the activities occurring on the campuses and administrators’ hesitance to provide the necessary information to ensure the students can do their jobs, as charged by the student newspapers for which they work. Examples of headlines include: “UCLA adopts policy limiting access to faculty work” (Santus, 2014, para. 1); “Purdue Exponent photographer detained by police while covering campus shooting” (McDermott, 2014, para. 1); “Appalachian editor calls for open chancellor search in front-page …

Open Records Requests At State Universities In Ohio: The Law, Legalities, And Litigation, Terry L. Hapney, David Lucas May 2016

Open Records Requests At State Universities In Ohio: The Law, Legalities, And Litigation, Terry L. Hapney, David Lucas

Terry L. Hapney Jr., Ph.D.

Recent scandals on the campuses of major universities in the United States have deeply affected not only coaches and coaching staffs, but also faculty, students, university governing bodies and administrators. Ensuing investigations and news coverage have prompted reporters to seek records, documents, and to attend meetings in order to scrutinize actions and records of university administrations. The open access and information laws, often described as sunshine laws, provide for public access to many records, documents, and meetings. Publicly-supported institutions must comply with these laws and this legality has created a conflict between administrators and student journalists in state universities throughout …

Fumigating The Criminal Bug: New Research On The Insulation Of Volkswagen’S Middle Management, J.S. Nelson May 2016

Fumigating The Criminal Bug: New Research On The Insulation Of Volkswagen’S Middle Management, J.S. Nelson

J.S. Nelson

New headlines each day reveal wide-spread misconduct and large-scale cheating at top international companies: Volkswagen’s emissions-defeat devices installed on over eleven million cars trace back to a manager’s PowerPoint from as early as 2006. Mitsubishi admits that it has been cheating on emissions standards for the eK and Dayz model cars for the past 25 years—even after a similar scandal almost wiped out the company 15 years ago. Takata’s US $70 million fine for covering up its exploding air bags in Honda, Ford, and other car brands could soon jump to US $200 million if a current …

Privatizing Creativity: Verlan In Advertising And Politics., Cat Tebaldi

Cat Tebaldi

Taking as a starting point advertisements I saw in cafes and food trucks, this presentation examines how advertising and popular media participates in, and profits from, the construction of a Mock urban language. I explore the constructions of a mock urban French that sounds hip at first but echoes colonial advertisements that positions subjects as not fully literate. Oasis juice's anthropomorphized Verlan-speaking fruit, "Onsfan la Poire", recalls the mock pidgin of the older ad slogan "y a  bon ...Banania". In the language of these ads images ranging from savage illiteracy to dopey gang members” are ascribed to what Inoue termed …

Ri Should Target Sex Buyers, Donna M. Hughes Dr. May 2016

Ri Should Target Sex Buyers, Donna M. Hughes Dr.

Donna M. Hughes

Men who buy sex----and they are only a small minority of men---are responsible for the crime of sex trafficking continuing to thrive. When sex traffickers find victims and coerce them into prostitution, they are serving the sex buyers, who pay them well for finding and marketing the victims to them.

For years, analysts have studied sex trafficking to determine the best way to combat this modern form of slavery. Today, a consensus is forming among advocates and law enforcement that to combat sex trafficking, the focus has to be on men who buy sex as much as on the pimps …

Mental Health Psychosocial And Child Protection For Syrian Adolescent Refugees In Jordan, Irene Lopez May 2016

Mental Health Psychosocial And Child Protection For Syrian Adolescent Refugees In Jordan, Irene Lopez

Irene Lopez

In order to ensure effective and appropriate interventions, International Medical Corps (IMC), with support from UNICEF, undertook detailed studies to understand the mental health and psychosocial (MHPSS) needs of Syrian refugee adolescents both in the camp and non-camp communities in Jordan. The purpose of the assessment is to assist in informing services that optimally encourage adolescent development, safety, and well-being. This report calls critical attention to Syrian adolescents' mental health and psychosocal priorities, as identified by adolescents themselves. This report provides an overview of the study, which used mixed qualitative and quantitative methods with 2028 Syrian adolescent refugees in five …

Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex Damage Is Associated With Decreased Ventral Striatum Volume And Response To Reward, Maia S. Pujara, Carissa L. Philippi, Julian C. Motzkin, Mustafa K. Baskaya, Michael Koenigs May 2016

Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex Damage Is Associated With Decreased Ventral Striatum Volume And Response To Reward, Maia S. Pujara, Carissa L. Philippi, Julian C. Motzkin, Mustafa K. Baskaya, Michael Koenigs

Carissa Philippi

The ventral striatum and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) are two central nodes of the “reward circuit” of the brain. Human neuroimaging studies have demonstrated coincident activation and functional connectivity between these brain regions, and animal studies have demonstrated that the vmPFC modulates ventral striatum activity. However, there have been no comparable data in humans to address whether the vmPFC may be critical for the reward-related response properties of the ventral striatum. In this study, we used fMRI in five neurosurgical patients with focal vmPFC lesions to test the hypothesis that the vmPFC is necessary for enhancing ventral striatum responses to …

Saving All The Freaks On The Life Raft : Blending Documentation Strategy With Community Engagement To Build A Local Music Archives., Carrie Daniels, Heather Fox, Sarah-Jane Poindexter, Elizabeth Reilly

Elizabeth Reilly

Louisville, Kentucky, has a rich musical heritage, including an underground scene that influenced the sound of not only punk, indie, and hardcore, but also popular music regionally, nationally and internationally. In 2013, faced with the loss of several members of this scene over the course of twelve months, archivists in the University of Louisville Archives and Special Collections launched a project to document this important slice of Louisville's musical culture. The Louisville Underground Music Archive (LUMA) Project successfully applies documentation strategy, paired with a strong community engagement component, to address the gap in the historical record related to this culture.

The University of Louisville Photographic Archives celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2012. Now holding over two million images within hundreds of discreet collections, the Photographic Archives was started by Robert J. Doherty who was responsible for acquiring the very significant Roy E. Stryker Papers and Standard Oil (New Jersey) social documentary collections . First curator, Don Anderson, collected fine print photography with work by photographers like Ralph Eugene Meatyard. The extensive archives of local commercial studios Caufield & Shook and The Royal Photo Company ensured the preservation of Louisville’s visual legacy and long-time curator James “Andy” Anderson grew the collection …
