Leveraging Articulate Storyline And An Lms To Go Beyond The One Shot Il Session, Eric A. Kowalik, Elizabeth Andrejasich Gibes, Valerie Beech

Elizabeth Andrejasich Gibes

Covering necessary information literacy topics in a one shot session can be difficult. To address this challenge, the Marquette Raynor Memorial Libraries moved to a new instruction model for the First Year English program. The new model involved embedded librarianship and interactive Articulate Storyline tutorials pre-loaded into the Learning Management System (LMS). These new initiatives provided flexibility in teaching information literacy concepts and fostered stronger relationships between librarians and their instructors. Learn about the development, implementation and evaluation of this new program. (Transcripts of the presentation can be found in the Notes field of the PowerPoint slides).

Transcending Institutions And Borders: 21st Century Digital Scholarship At K-State, Rebel Cummings-Sauls, Rachel Miles, Charlene N. Simser, Ryan Otto

Rebel Cummings-Sauls

Digital scholarship of the 21st century transcends institutions and borders with its freedom from print and physical locations. In this session, the presenters will discuss various aspects of establishing a digital scholarship center, supporting open access through the institutional repository (K-State Research Exchange - K-REx) along with other outreach efforts, and the implications of building a sustainable open access publishing platform (New Prairie PressNPP). The Center for the Advancement of Digital Scholarship at K-State Libraries serves our campus community, but digital scholarship extends K-State's impact far beyond Manhattan, Kansas. Highlighting the scholarship at our campus is only one small piece …

Collaborating For Student Success: An E-Mail Survey Of U.S. Libraries And Writing Centers, Holly A. Jackson

Holly Jackson

After re-starting a collaborative partnership between the library and writing center at wright state university, the librarians and writing center staff involved wanted to compare data with other existing collaborations. With a limited amount of data available in current literature, they conducted an e-mail survey of librarians, writing center staff, and writing tutoring services staff from across the country. This survey found that the majority of participants had a writing center on campus and that around two-thirds of respondents had an existing partnership. The scope of these collaborations varied and many commented on a need for more communication, planning, and …

Fractionating Choice: A Study On Reward Discrimination, Preference, And Relative Valuation In The Rat (Rattus Norvegicus), Joshua M. Ricker, Justin D. Hatch, Daniel D. Powers, Howard C. Cromwell Apr 2016

Fractionating Choice: A Study On Reward Discrimination, Preference, And Relative Valuation In The Rat (Rattus Norvegicus), Joshua M. Ricker, Justin D. Hatch, Daniel D. Powers, Howard C. Cromwell

Howard Casey Cromwell

Choice behavior combines discrimination between distinctive outcomes, preference for specific outcomes and relative valuation of comparable outcomes. Previous work has focused on 1 component (i.e., preference) disregarding other influential processes that might provide a more complete understanding. Animal models of choice have been explored primarily utilizing extensive training, limited freedom for multiple decisions and sparse behavioral measures constrained to a single phase of motivated action. The present study used a paradigm that combines different elements of previous methods with the goal to distinguish among components of choice and explore how well components match predictions based on risk-sensitive foraging strategies. In …

Education, Emily C. Hannum, Yu Xie Apr 2016

Education, Emily C. Hannum, Yu Xie

Emily C. Hannum

This manuscript offers an overview of key research in the social sciences regarding links between poverty and education. We begin by discussing conceptual definitions of poverty and education and the ways these concepts have been operationalized in the literature. We then review literatures related to two broad themes: how poverty shapes educational outcomes, and how education affects chances of living in poverty. Within each theme, wherever possible, we consider research at the national, sub-national, and household or individual level.

Slavery And Freedom In Theory And Practice, David Watkins Apr 2016

Slavery And Freedom In Theory And Practice, David Watkins

David Watkins

Slavery has long stood as a mirror image to the conception of a free person in republican theory. This essay contends that slavery deserves this central status in a theory of freedom, but a more thorough examination of slavery in theory and in practice will reveal additional insights about freedom previously unacknowledged by republicans. Slavery combines imperium (state domination) and dominium (private domination) in a way that both destroys freedom today and diminishes opportunities to achieve freedom tomorrow. Dominium and imperium working together are a greater affront to freedom than either working alone. However, an examination of slavery in practice, …
