The Problem Of State Intervention In Post-Abolition Slavery: A Critique Of Consensus, Anthony Talbott, David Watkins
The Problem Of State Intervention In Post-Abolition Slavery: A Critique Of Consensus, Anthony Talbott, David Watkins
David Watkins
Slavery is now illegal by all states and under international law. Contrary to the hopes of abolitionists, this state of affairs has transformed rather than eradicated slavery as an institution. Furthermore, responses by states to post-abolition forms of slavery have often been less than ideal. This paper begins by comparing two state responses to slavery in the early 20th century: the federal peonage trials in Montgomery, Alabama from 1903-1905, and the federal response to an alleged epidemic of “white slavery” from 1909-1910, culminating in the passage of the White Slave-Traffic Act. Taken together, these responses engender pessimism about the state …

Application Of The Occupational Sitting And Physical Activity Questionnaire (Ospaq) To Office Based Workers, Jonine Jancey, Martin Tye, Sarah Mcgann, Krysten Blackford, Andy H. Lee
Sarah McGann
Background
The workplace is a setting where sedentary behaviour is highly prevalent. Accurately measuring physical activity and sedentary behaviour is crucial to assess the impact of behavioural change interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and criterion validity of the Occupational Sitting and Physical Activity Questionnaire (OSPAQ) and compare with data collected by accelerometers.
Methods
A test-retest study was undertaken on 99 participants using the OSPAQ. Data were then compared to accelerometer records of 41 participants. Reliability was assessed by paired t-test and intra-class correlations (ICC) via a two-way mixed model based on absolute agreement. Difference and agreement were …
Working With The Research Services Office, Michael K. Organ
Working With The Research Services Office, Michael K. Organ
Michael Organ
The Australian and New Zealand university sector presents numerous permutations in regards to how institutional repository (IR) managers work with their local research office. The repository may be managed by the research office, the library (common), the information technology (IT) section, central administration (rare) and either singly or in a mixture of the above. At the University of Wollongong (UOW), for example, the open access institutional repository was set up in 2005 with the assistance of funding from the Research Services Office (RSO). The UOW Library has, since 2006, managed the repository – branded Research Online (RO) - and the …

3d Immersive Collection And Teaching Environments: The Yellow House Project At Uow, Michael K. Organ, Christopher L. Moore, Rebecca Daly, Neil R. Cairns
Michael Organ
This paper discusses the Yellow House VR project at the University of Wollongong. Innovative virtual reality technologies such as Oculus Rift are being utilised to recreate the 1970s Sydney artist community space known as the Yellow House, as both an historic replication and openly accessible, immersive teaching and learning environment for use and adaptation by teachers, students, researchers and the general community. The paper considers the role of the library in the enhanced presentation of digitised collections through new and evolving technologies that provide opportunities for knowledge enhancement and support the development of student e-portfolios.

Want To See The Sites? Better Find A Better Guide: Do Popular Search Engines Return Librarian-Recommended Sites?, David Tyler, Scott Childers, Mary Elizabeth Mcneil, Alicia Dostal
Beth McNeil
This paper presents the results of a study of the utility of several popular search engines and of two newer search engines with respect to librarian-selected lists of Web resources and internet searching behaviors. This study addresses whether said resources are returned where internet searchers could reasonably be expected to find them and whether the search engines employed serve as acceptable substitutes for the expert advice of librarians. Search engines included in the study were Google, MSN.com, Yahoo, Lycos, AskJeeves, Icerocket, and Acoona. Searches for the study were based on the topics/titles of the “Internet Resources” columns from College and …
A Phenomenological Study Exploring The Leadership Development Experiences Of Academic Research Library Leaders, Beth Mcneil
A Phenomenological Study Exploring The Leadership Development Experiences Of Academic Research Library Leaders, Beth Mcneil
Beth McNeil
This phenomenological study describes the leadership development experiences of academic librarians currently working in leadership roles in academic research libraries to discover their experiences of being a library leader and to explore how they describe their own leadership development. Study participants identified as having experienced positive leadership development experiences during their careers as academic research library leaders and were, at the time of this study, employed and actively working in leadership positions reporting directly to the head of their academic research library. The goal of this exploration was to understand what the academic library leaders had experienced, with regard to …
Using Reminiscence Group Members' Family Slogans And Epitaphs To Enhance Their Planning Abilities: A Case Study, James J. Magee
Using Reminiscence Group Members' Family Slogans And Epitaphs To Enhance Their Planning Abilities: A Case Study, James J. Magee
James J. Magee
Introducing a focus on family slogans and epitaphs into reminiscence groups serves three functions. It facilitates the group process by engaging all members in selecting the slogans and epitaphs that they discern in the memories the reviewers share. It also shows how these family dynamics over the grandparents’ and parents’ generations condition, if not determine, the slogans and epitaphs of the reviewers themselves. Finally, it enhances reviewers’ planning for themselves by alerting them both to the accommodations they may need to make to their programming and to the talents they can draw upon because of the family they were born …

Try To Be Complete On Something: Tips On Building A Highly Specialized Subject Collection, Tim Bottorff
Try To Be Complete On Something: Tips On Building A Highly Specialized Subject Collection, Tim Bottorff
Tim Bottorff
Wise and careful selection of materials remains among the most important and enduring duties of the librarian. However, once one moves beyond general principles learned in library school, one quickly learns that real collection development is difficult and time-consuming. This is especially true in a specialized subject library, where traditional collection development methods do not always yield good results. The author discusses experience in developing a specialized collection in hospitality management materials, but the tips in this article will appeal to a wide variety of librarians seeking to build a specialized, subject-specific collection.

Making Online Instruction Count: Statistical Reporting Of Web-Based Library Instruction Activities, Tim Bottorff, Andrew Todd
Tim Bottorff
Statistical reporting of library instruction (LI) activities has historically focused on measures relevant to face-to-face (F2F) settings. However, newer forms of LI conducted in the online realm may be difficult to count in traditional ways, leading to inaccurate reporting to both internal and external stakeholders. A thorough literature review is combined with the results of an investigative survey to reveal the current status of reporting such activities. The results reveal considerable confusion about the reporting of Web-based LI activities, even though a number of librarians are devoting significant amounts of time to this important and growing area of librarianship.

Libraries provide resources for not only for consuming information, but also generating new information and research. In addition to books and academic journals, we traditionally provide creation tools such as computers, (2D) printers, and copy machines. Sometimes, the product of one’s research may be a physical artifact such as a sculpture, a prototype device, or a biological model. The recent decrease in the cost of 3D printing technology makes it possible for libraries to begin providing this service as well, giving all students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with a burgeoning trend in nearly every field of study and professional …

Makerspaces and related concepts and technologies are currently the subject of much discussion in the library community, particularly among public libraries. One prominent technology often featured in makerspaces is three-dimensional (3D) printing. In this article the author describes a 3D printing service launched at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Lovejoy Library; the justification for providing the service in an academic library, equipment selection, procedures and workflow, and evaluation of the success of the service to date.
