In 2016, the speakers embarked upon a multi-institutional project to compare print and e-book usage across four Southern California institutions (Claremont Colleges Library, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, and University of Southern California). The preliminary results of this comparative usage analysis, presented as a poster session at the Charleston Conference, revealed that print books in certain art and architecture classes and subclasses are used over e-books, suggesting “leanings” in format preferences of users.
While this collaborative research project provided provocative insights into art and architecture e-book usage, it also raised important research methods questions related to collaborative analysis using multiple …

What is the impact of social media, targeted email, and other intentional promotional efforts on e-resource usage? Is there a correlation between e-resources marketing and the use of those resources? What data can we gather, what can we learn, and how can this be used to improve our communications with faculty and outreach via social media and digital spaces?
This presentation will explore the findings from the first year of a multi-year study on marketing e-resources at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Librarians at the William H. Hannon Library examined the usage of specific e-resources over the course of …

The Ethics Of Implementation: Institutional Remedies And The Lawyer's Role, Susan Poser
Susan Poser
The issue addressed in this article is whether and to what extent a lawyer has an ethical responsibility to pursue implementation of the remedy in institutional reform litigation. Institutional reform litigation refers to cases in which an individual or class of individuals sues a large organization in order to vindicate constitutional or statutory rights. The types of cases with which this article is concerned are the "public law" type, such as school desegregation, prisoners' rights and patients' rights cases, although included under the rubric of institutional reform can be, inter alia, antitrust, reapportionment and bankruptcy cases. The implementation stage of …

United States V. Steinmetz: The Legal Legacy Of The Civil War, Revisited, Susan Poser, Elizabeth R. Varon
Susan Poser
One of the enduring and yet unresolved issues concerning the Civil War is its legal nature: Was it an insurrection or an international war? During the war and since, the United States courts have repeatedly been called upon to determine the status of property which was under the control of the Confederacy and its agents during the Civil War. In the process of making such determinations, the courts have reopened questions about the war's legal status. United States v. Steinmetz is such a case.

Social Norms Approach In Secondary Schools: Literature Review, Syeda Kashfee Ahmed, Pru Mitchell, Jenny Trevitt
Syeda Kashfee Ahmed
Life Education Australia commissioned the Australian Council for Educational Research to provide a summary of research related to interventions that used a social norms approach (SNA). The review focused on interventions aimed at reducing risky behaviours in secondary school students, particularly related to use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Research questions There were two key questions guiding this literature review: Question 1: If we make more realistic the perceptions of young people about the levels of risky behaviour, and attitudes towards these risky behaviours, amongst their peers, is that likely to reduce the likelihood of them engaging in such …

Institutional Repository Workflow, Project Management, And Outreach In A Remote/Online Library Environment, Daina Dickman
Institutional Repository Workflow, Project Management, And Outreach In A Remote/Online Library Environment, Daina Dickman
Daina Dickman, MA, MLIS, AHIP
In 2018 Providence St. Joseph Health launched an institutional repository, primarily staffed by a librarian located in Oregon and a library assistant located in Montana with occasional help from other Library Services staff. Workflow and communication standards had to be created that would allow library staff in multiple locations and time zones to seamlessly launch, populate, and manage the institutional repository. Outreach, instruction, and promotion tactics had to also be created to reach researchers and clinical staff across six states and 100+ locations.

Adapting An Institutional Repository For A Medical Library Environment, Daina Dickman

How does it work when a hospital library begins to create an Institutional Repository (IR) for their unique library environment. Come hear about the experiences of the Providence St. Joseph Health library department in launching their IR using BePress's Digital Commons and Expert Gallery products.
We will discuss the challenges in adapting an IR product for the medical library environment when the product has primarily been used by traditional academic institutions. How can you meaningfully display and categorize your items when they all get lumped in to "Medical and Health Sciences" by the IR's existing organizational structure? How can you …

Building A Health System Institutional Repository: Setting Yourself Up For Success From The Start, Heather J. Martin, Barbara (Basia) Delawska-Elliott, Daina Dickman
Daina Dickman, MA, MLIS, AHIP
Background: While more common in university settings, institutional repositories (IR) have a place within hospitals and healthcare systems too, though the challenges in creating them may be different. This paper looks at the development of a Digital Commons institutional repository at Providence St. Joseph Health. The authors present the necessary steps for a successful initiative beginning with the planning process and building from there. Highlighted are some of the different challenges faced in non-academic settings; considerations when selecting a platform and designing and structure; and recommendations for doing outreach and promotion to unique user groups.
Description: Library staff proactively followed …
