Navigating The Michelle P. Waiver: A Narrative Examination Of The Impact Of Parent Care-Related Uncertainty And Decision Making For Children With Disabilities, Whittney Darnell

Whittney Darnell

The Michelle P. Waiver (MPW) is the primary means of health insurance for more than 10,000 people in the state of Kentucky. The waiver is especially popular among families with young children with disabilities because it is robust in its benefit offerings and also one of the few Medicaid resources that does not include parental income as a qualifying factor in eligibility. Through the waiver, children receive a medical card as well as additional coverage for medical expenses that fall beyond the scope of traditional health insurance. For these young children to gain access to the comprehensive offerings of the …

Street Fights: Corporate Social Responsibility And A Dragway's Attempt To Reduce Illegal Street Racing, Amanda E. Greene, Andy Dotterweich, Gary Lhotsky, Jason Davis

Amanda E. Greene

This study sought to explore a professional sport venue’s use of Corporate social responsibility (CSR) to promote positive social change, by addressing illegal street racing, through events designed for community participation. This study specifically looked at public dragracing events, titled “Street Fights,” held at a professional dragway. The purpose of this study was to 1) examine drivers’ awareness of the event’s social responsibility initiatives with Street Fight events and 2) determine if these initiatives are promoting behavioral changes in drivers. Drivers at Street Fight events were surveyed (n=77, 60% response rate) on their levels of awareness of the venue’s social …

Fictive Kinships And The Remaking Of Family Life In The Context Of Paid Domestic Work: The Case Of Philippine Yayas, Maria Rosario De Guzman, Aileen S. Garcia, Minerva D. Tuliao

Aileen Garcia

In this chapter, we draw from our study on Filipina rural-to-urban migrant workers in the domestic care sector to illustrate how migrants make and remake family in the context of separation. The setting of our study is in Quezon City, Philippines, and our participants are women employed as yayas-domestic care workers employed to care for children. They live in their employers' homes, and most of our respondents live apart from their own children and all are living away from their nuclear families. Details of this study are laid out in an earlier paper that focused on the experience of family …

The Power Law Distribution Of Cumulative Coal Production, Andrew Balthrop, Siyu Quan May 2019

The Power Law Distribution Of Cumulative Coal Production, Andrew Balthrop, Siyu Quan

Andrew Balthrop

The coal industry is dominated by the largest mines, with 1% of coal mines in the US being responsible for 65% of cumulative production. This provides evidence that cumulative coal production may be well approximated by a
power law, where the amount of production is inversely proportionate to the distributional rank. Maximum likelihood and regression-based procedures estimate the counter-cumulative power law parameter to be less than one,
indicating there is no well-defined mean or variance for cumulative production. Goodness of fit tests indicate the power-law is a better fit to the data than other competing one-parameter distributions. Additionally, the powerlaw …

The Effect Of Job Referrals On Labor Market Outcomes In Brazil, Christopher J. O'Leary, Túlio Cravo, Ana Cristina Sierra, Leandro Justino Veloso

Christopher J. O'Leary

This paper is the first to use program administrative data from Brazil’s National Employment System (SINE) to assess the impact of SINE job interview referrals on labor market outcomes. Data for a five-year period (2012–2016) are used to evaluate the impact of SINE on employment probability, wage rates, time until reemployment, and job tenure. Difference-in-differences estimates suggest that a SINE job interview referral increases the probability of finding a job within three months of the referral and reduces the number of months to find reemployment, the average job tenure of the next job, and the reemployment wage. Subgroup analysis suggests …

Training To Inhibit Negative Content Affects Memory And Rumination, Shimrit Daches, Nilly Mor, Paula T. Hertel May 2019

Training To Inhibit Negative Content Affects Memory And Rumination, Shimrit Daches, Nilly Mor, Paula T. Hertel

Paula T Hertel

Depressive rumination, the tendency to engage in repetitive self-focus in response to distress, seems to be affected by a variety of cognitive biases that in turn maintain negative emotional states. The current study examined whether the difficulty in inhibiting attention to negative information contributes to rumination and to rumination-related biases in memory. Seventy-nine ruminators underwent a 3-week computer-based training, designed to increase either inhibition of negative words or attention to them. On immediate post-training trials, as well as on 2-week follow-up tests, we found evidence for transfer of inhibition training. Training effects also occurred on session-by-session and post-training measures of …

Diane Fittipaldi

The purpose of this study was to understand how advertising agency culture affects the long-term careers of women account executives as they age. Qualitative data was collected via unstructured, one-on-one, in-depth interviews with a nationally sourced sample 15 female advertising account executives aged 40 …

Inclination For Duplication: Faculty Works In Institutional Repositories, Ashley D.R. Sergiadis

Ashley D.R. Sergiadis

Faculty works (e.g. journal articles, conference proceedings) in institutional repositories (IRs) differ from other collections due to their inclination for duplication on other platforms: publisher websites, preprint servers, other IRs, etc. This characteristic can create interesting and different approaches to planning, populating, and promoting faculty works collections. Come to this roundtable discussion to talk about current and future practices related to faculty works in IRs. Share your current policies, procedures, and outreach methods. Brainstorm the ideal future for faculty works collections. And ultimately, consider possible changes to your current practices to make that future into a reality.
