When Good Bankers Go Bad: Is Moral Hazard Evolutionarily Stable?, Atin Basuchoudhary, Troy Siemers, Sam Allen Dec 2013

When Good Bankers Go Bad: Is Moral Hazard Evolutionarily Stable?, Atin Basuchoudhary, Troy Siemers, Sam Allen

Atin Basu Choudhary

We apply existing theory as a preliminary analysis of whether efficient contracts can evolve naturally. Any banker could belong to one of two cultures – patient and impatient. We suggest that the interaction of patient bankers with other patient bankers is a critical element in the success of efficient contracts while the interaction of impatient bankers with other impatient bankers leads to the spread of moral hazard in the banking system. We show that the success (or failure) of efficient contracts depends on the initial proportion of bankers who are part of the patient culture. We further show that regulatory …

Women's Inheritance Rights And Intergenerational Transmission Of Resources In India, Klaus Deininger, Aparajita Goyal, Hari Nagarajan Dec 2013

Women's Inheritance Rights And Intergenerational Transmission Of Resources In India, Klaus Deininger, Aparajita Goyal, Hari Nagarajan

Aparajita Goyal

We use inheritance patterns over three generations of individuals to assess the impact of changes in the Hindu Succession Act that grant daughters equal coparcenary birth rights in joint family property that were denied to daughters in the past. We show that the amendment significantly increased daughters’ likelihood to inherit land, but that even after the amendment, substantial bias persists. Our results also indicate a robust increase in educational attainment of daughters, suggesting an alternative channel of wealth transfer.

A Multivariate Analysis Of The Causal Flow Between Renewable Energy Consumption And Gdp In Tunisia, Ousama Ben Salha, Maamar Sebri Dec 2013

A Multivariate Analysis Of The Causal Flow Between Renewable Energy Consumption And Gdp In Tunisia, Ousama Ben Salha, Maamar Sebri

Ousama Ben Salha

This paper examines the causality linkages between economic growth, renewable energy consumption, CO2 emissions and domestic investment in Tunisia between 1971 and 2010. Using the ARDL bounds testing approach to cointegration, long-run relationships between the variables are identified. The Granger causality analysis, on the other hand, indicates that there is bi-directional causality between renewable energy consumption and economic growth, which supports the feedback hypothesis in Tunisia. In addition, the quantity of CO2 emissions collapses as a reaction to an increase in renewable energy consumption. These findings remain robust even when controlling for the presence of structural break. We conclude that …

On The Causal Dynamics Between Economic Growth, Renewable Energy Consumption, Co2 Emissions And Trade Openness: Fresh Evidence From Brics Countries, Maamar Sebri, Ousama Ben Salha Dec 2013

On The Causal Dynamics Between Economic Growth, Renewable Energy Consumption, Co2 Emissions And Trade Openness: Fresh Evidence From Brics Countries, Maamar Sebri, Ousama Ben Salha

Ousama Ben Salha

The current study investigates the causal relationship between economic growth and renewable energy consumption in the BRICS countries over the period 1971-2010 within a multivariate framework. The ARDL bounds testing approach to cointegration and vector error correction model (VECM) are used to examine the long-run and causal relationships between economic growth, renewable energy consumption, trade openness and carbon dioxide emissions. Empirical evidence shows that, based on the ARDL estimates, there exist long-run equilibrium relationships among the competing variables. Regarding the VECM results, bi-directional Granger causality exists between economic growth and renewable energy consumption, suggesting the feedback hypothesis, which can explain …

Information Visualization For Learning Words In The Qur’An, Raja Jamilah Raja Yusof Dr Dec 2013

Information Visualization For Learning Words In The Qur’An, Raja Jamilah Raja Yusof Dr

Raja Jamilah Raja Yusof Dr

Qur’an is a source of guidance to Muslims around the world. Although the language of the Qur’an is Arabic, many Muslims with different native languages attempt to learn the language to understand the message of the Qur’an. Qur’an contains many repeated words. Even though there are approximately 77 430 words in the Qur’an, there are only 5155 words used repeatedly or at least once to make up those words. This means that in theory for non-native Arabic speakers, these words can be added to their vocabulary to understand the literal meaning of the message of the Qur’an. In this paper, …

Between Land And Sea: Divergent Data Stewardship Practices In Deep-Sea Biosphere Research, Rebekah Cummings, Peter Darch Dec 2013

Between Land And Sea: Divergent Data Stewardship Practices In Deep-Sea Biosphere Research, Rebekah Cummings, Peter Darch

Rebekah Cummings

Data in deep-sea biosphere research often live a double life. While the original data generated on IODP expeditions are highly structured, professionally curated, and widely shared, the downstream data practices of deep-sea biosphere laboratories are far more localized and ad hoc. These divergent data practices make it difficult to track the provenance of datasets from the cruise ships to the laboratory or to integrate IODP data with laboratory data. An in-depth study of the divergent data practices in deep-sea biosphere research allows us to: - Better understand the social and technical forces that shape data stewardship throughout the data lifecycle; …

The Creation Of Trust - The Interplay Of Rationality, Institutions And Exchange, Martin Mathews, Peter Stokes Dec 2013

The Creation Of Trust - The Interplay Of Rationality, Institutions And Exchange, Martin Mathews, Peter Stokes

Martin Mathews

Relationships based on notions of trust represent a central aspect of the communitarian model of industrial districts. Examination of trust has generated a substantial literature; nevertheless, there have been relatively few studies that have empirically considered the sources of trust that operate in local ties and connections. The paper aims to redress this imbalance by investigating relationships in the Arve Valley industrial district near Geneva. It considers sources of trust by engaging the theoretical framework of Möllering’s (2006a) model of trust which is predicated on the concepts of reason, routine and reflexivity. In conjunction with this, the field research employs …

Knowledge Gaps On Water Issues And Consumption Habits In At-Risk Chinese Cities, Hong Xiao Dec 2013

Knowledge Gaps On Water Issues And Consumption Habits In At-Risk Chinese Cities, Hong Xiao

Hong Xiao

This research explores awareness of water issues and beverage consumption habits of students at four universities in northern China, the region most at risk for water shortages. While water is treated as a common property resource in China, there are significant demographic differences in attitudes towards state responsibility for water quality and supply, with older respondents, urban residents, and women showing more faith in the government. Surveys of 671 university students reveal a disjuncture between their awareness of shortages and pollution issues at the national level, and awareness of local conditions. A second disjuncture is apparent in respondents’ views of …

40 Years In Paradox: Post-Normalisation Sino-Japanese Relations, Yinan He Dec 2013

40 Years In Paradox: Post-Normalisation Sino-Japanese Relations, Yinan He

Yinan He

Post-normalisation Sino-Japanese relations have been fraught with contradictions. In particular, three paradoxes stand out over the past 40 years. First, despite many shared geopolitical and economic interests, China and Japan have never developed genuine strategic cooperation, and since the 2000s have even evinced a trend towards thinly-veiled or open rivalry. Second, time, rather than healing the wounds of past wars, has since the mid-1980s yielded only a more vivid and bitter recollection of history that has bedevilled both official and popular relations. Third, diplomatic and commercial ties as well as “thick” societal contacts developed since normalisation have failed to bridge …

Some New Evidence On The Determinants Of Money Demand In Developing Countries – A Case Study Of Tunisia, Ousama Ben Salha, Zied Jaidi Nov 2013

Some New Evidence On The Determinants Of Money Demand In Developing Countries – A Case Study Of Tunisia, Ousama Ben Salha, Zied Jaidi

Ousama Ben Salha

The present paper aims at examining the money demand function in Tunisia during the period 1981-2011. Unlike previous conventional money demand studies, the major components of real income are considered in this paper. Using the ARDL bounds testing approach, results reveal evidence of cointegration between broad money demand and its determinants, namely final consumption expenditure, expenditure on investment goods, export expenditure and interest rate. In the long-run, final consumption expenditure represents the major money demand determinant. This finding is robust to a variety of alternative money demand specifications and estimation methods. The empirical investigation suggests also the stability of the …

Estimating The Costs Of Public Health Services: Progress On The Institute Of Medicine Recommendations, Glen P. Mays

Glen Mays

The National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine recommended in 2012 that the federal government undertake work to identify the components and costs of a "minimum package" of public health programs, services, and capabilities that should be available in every American community. This presentation summarizes work that is currently underway through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-supported Public Health Practice-Based Research Networks (PBRN) Program to estimate the costs of public health delivery.

Depression, Anxiety, And Stress Among Mothers Of Healthy Children And Mothers Of Children With Cochlear Implants, Seyed Mohammad, Kalantarkousheh, دکتر سید محمد کلانتر کوشه Nov 2013

Depression, Anxiety, And Stress Among Mothers Of Healthy Children And Mothers Of Children With Cochlear Implants, Seyed Mohammad, Kalantarkousheh, دکتر سید محمد کلانتر کوشه

Seyed Mohammad Kalantarkousheh

Background: The birth of a disabled child is one of the resonant factors that can cause family disorders. Mothers who have disabled children experience different levels of anxiety and stress. Decreased hearing, meanwhile, is one of the major reasons for disability. Parents have different concerns about their children’s development and social relations. Cochlear implantation is a new way to cure deafness and enables the disabled child to hear, talk, and communicate. This research intends to compare the outbreak of depression, anxiety, and stress among mothers who have healthy children and those of cochlear implantation children. Additionally, the research examines if …

What Do We Worry About When We Worry About Price Discrimination? The Law And Ethics Of Using Personal Information For Pricing, Akiva A. Miller Nov 2013

What Do We Worry About When We Worry About Price Discrimination? The Law And Ethics Of Using Personal Information For Pricing, Akiva A. Miller

Akiva A Miller

New information technologies have dramatically increased sellers’ ability to engage in retail price discrimination. Debates over using personal information for price discrimination frequently treat it as a single problem, and are not sufficiently sensitive to the variety of price discrimination practices, the different kinds of information they require in order to succeed, and the different ethical concerns they raise. This paper explores the ethical and legal debate over regulating price discrimination facilitated by consumers’ personal information. Various kinds of “privacy remedies”—self-regulation, technological fixes, state regulation, and legislating private causes of legal action—each have their place. By drawing distinctions between various …

A Priceless Review, David Thomas Nov 2013

A Priceless Review, David Thomas

David Chandler Thomas, PhD

The book, Priceless, is chock full of ideas, many of which are undoubtedly useful. The style is readable, with enough anecdotes to keep the reader’s interest. Unfortunately, the book is almost as confusing as the health-care system. There are too many moving parts, too many clever ideas, and not enough high level insights into how to cut the Gordian health-care knot. As hard as it is to make changes in the U.S. health-care system, it is unlikely the author’s suggestions will find a listening ear.

Immigration And African American Wages And Employment: Critically Appraising The Empirical Evidence, Patrick Leon Mason Nov 2013

Immigration And African American Wages And Employment: Critically Appraising The Empirical Evidence, Patrick Leon Mason

Patrick L. Mason

This paper critically assesses the empirical evidence on the relationship between immigration and African American employment. Studies using various methodologies and data are reviewed: natural experiments, time series, and cross-sectional studies of local labor markets and intertemporal changes in the national labor market. We find that for African Americans as a whole, immigration may have little effect on mean wages and probability of employment. However, there is some evidence that immigration may have had an adverse impact on the labor market outcomes of African Americans belonging to low education-experience groups. However, even this modest conclusion must be qualified: the literature …
