Is Three A Crowd? Exploring The Development And Satisfaction Of Students In Triples, Larry D. Long, Kyle Kujawa Jan 2015

Is Three A Crowd? Exploring The Development And Satisfaction Of Students In Triples, Larry D. Long, Kyle Kujawa

Larry D. Long

Tripling, the assignment of a third resident to a room designed for two, is a common practice at many colleges and universities across the United States. Most of the research on tripling was conducted three or four decades ago, and research exploring how living in a triple affects the educational gains and satisfaction of college students is limited. The researchers compared the residential experience of residence hall residents who lived in standard double rooms to the experience of residents who lived in triples. The results revealed the residential experience of students in triples was comparable to the experience of students …

The Political Economy Of Special Economic Zones, Lotta Moberg Jan 2015

The Political Economy Of Special Economic Zones, Lotta Moberg

Lotta Moberg

Special economic zones (SEZs) are a wide-spread and increasingly popular tool for economic growth. Big or small, secluded or isolated, they are areas where a government allows for different rules to apply than the rest of the country. Most commonly, this means granting fiscal privileges to investors in the zones. Exemptions from taxes, tariffs, and sometimes regulations mean that SEZs form islands of economic liberalization in a country. A common attitude to zones is therefore that while broader liberalization is preferred, SEZs always benefit a country as long as they bring about this marginal improvement. The skeptical view of SEZs …

Licensing And Innovation With Imperfect Contract Enforcement, Richard J. Gilbert, Eirik Gaard Kristiansen Jan 2015

Licensing And Innovation With Imperfect Contract Enforcement, Richard J. Gilbert, Eirik Gaard Kristiansen

Richard J Gilbert

Licensing promotes technology transfer and innovation, but enforcement of licensing contracts is often imperfect. We explore the implications of weak enforcement of contractual commitments on the licensing conduct of firms and market performance. An upstream firm develops a technology that it can license to downstream firms using a fixed fee and a per-unit royalty. Strictly positive per-unit royalties maximize the licensor's profit if competition among licensees limits joint profits. Although imperfect contract enforcement lowers the profits of the upstream firm, weak enforcement lowers prices, increase downstream innovation, and in some circumstances can increase total economic welfare.

The Growth Of Chinese Professionals: A New Middle Class In The Making, Xiaogang Wu, Zhuoni Zhang

Xiaogang Wu

This chapter describes the growth of professional workers in the context of the expanding higher education system and the improving economic structure in China, especially since the late 1990s. Based on the analyses of data from the census/mini-census supplemented by the 2010 Chinese General Social Survey, the chapter illustrates the demographic profiles, socioeconomic positions, and political orientations and participation of Chinese professionals and compares them with managers, as the two groups form a major part of the emerging new middle classes in China.

Why Lawyers Fear Love: Mohandas Gandhi’S Significance To The Mindfulness In Law Movement, Nehal A. Patel

Nehal A. Patel

Although mindfulness has gained the attention of the legal community, there are only a handful of scholarly law articles on mindfulness. The literature effectively documents the Mindfulness in Law movement, but there has been minimal effort to situate the movement into the broader history of non-Western ideas in the legal academy and profession. Similarly, there has been little recent scholarship offering a critique of the American legal system through the insights of mindfulness. In this Article, I attempt to fill these gaps by situating the Mindfulness in Law movement into the history of modern education’s western-dominated world-view. With this approach, …

Journalism, Gatekeeping, And Interactivity, Neil Thurman Jan 2015

Journalism, Gatekeeping, And Interactivity, Neil Thurman

Neil Thurman

Gate-keeping is one of the most inclusive research traditions in the field of journalism studies. In its investigations into the processes “by which the vast array of potential news messages are winnowed, shaped, and prodded into these few that are actually transmitted by news media (Shoemaker et al., 2001: 233) it accommodates political and economic influences—as well as organizational routines and practices; the influence of the audience, outside sources, and technology; and journalists’ individual characteristics and collective professional values. However, changes in how technology and the audience—individually and collectively—are taking on journalistic gate-keeping functions; how established gate-keeping routines have changed …

Hs4008 Literature Review - Sexual Discontinuities: A Review Of The Historical Political Shifts And Their Impact On Sexuality In Shanghai, Prashant Deepak Waikar Jan 2015

Hs4008 Literature Review - Sexual Discontinuities: A Review Of The Historical Political Shifts And Their Impact On Sexuality In Shanghai, Prashant Deepak Waikar

Prashant Deepak Waikar

This paper offers a literature review of 'some' significant sociopolitical-historical institutional shifts within Shanghai, and their impact on the conceptualization of heterosexual sexuality within the city. I fundamentally attempt to 'paint the picture', or, as such, provide a contextual background for this dimension of sexuality in Shanghai.

The Value Of Technology Improvements In Games With Externalities: A Fresh Look At Offsetting Behavior, Michael Hoy, Mattias K. Polborn Jan 2015

The Value Of Technology Improvements In Games With Externalities: A Fresh Look At Offsetting Behavior, Michael Hoy, Mattias K. Polborn

Mattias K Polborn

We model the effect of safety technology improvements in a symmetric game in which each player's payoff depends on his own precaution and the other players average precaution. We derive conditions under which an improved technology increases or decreases players' equilibrium utility. For mandatory safety technologies, the direction of the welfare effect depends on whether the externality between players is positive or negative, and on whether the technology improvement is a complement or substitute for individual precaution. For safety technologies that individuals can choose whether or not to purchase, individuals expend too much on reducing the loss size but may …

Public Act 231 Of 2008: Proposed Policy Reform To Address The Ever-Increasing Obesity Rates In Michigan, Rachele M. Hendricks-Sturrup Jan 2015

Public Act 231 Of 2008: Proposed Policy Reform To Address The Ever-Increasing Obesity Rates In Michigan, Rachele M. Hendricks-Sturrup

Rachele M Hendricks-Sturrup

In order to address the growing problem of obesity in the state of Michigan, Michigan implemented Public Act 231 of 2008 (Senate Bill 294, Amendment to the Commercial Rehabilitation Act) (hereinafter referred to as “Public Act 231”). Public Act 231 introduces a property tax incentive that seeks to increase access to affordable, healthful foods in rural and low-income urban areas (S. 294, 2008). Given recent facts stating that obesity rates in Michigan have steadily increased between years 2008-2013, it is apparent that the tax incentive under Public Act 231 has had very little impact in effectively tackling the obesity problem …

Management And Function, Steffen Roth Jan 2015

Management And Function, Steffen Roth

Dr. Steffen Roth

The distinction of function systems such as the political system, the economy, science, religion, or the legal system is considered a key principle of modern societies (Bergthaller and Schinko, 2011; Brier, 2006; Jönhill, 2012; Kjaer, 2010; Leydesdorff, 2002; Luhmann, 1977; Luhmann, 1990; Luhmann, 1997; Schoeneborn, 2011; Seidl, 2005; Tsivacou, 1996; Vanderstraeten, 2005; Wetzel and Van Gorp, 2014; Wolfgang Rennison, 2007). Modern man knows how to talk business and when to avoid politics or religion in conversations; considers the buying of votes as corruption; and differentiates show trials from normal cases. Though these and similar differentiations are naturally applied by a …

Towards Measuring Interventions In Rainfed Areas, Hippu Salk Kristle Nathan, Rajendra, Srijit Mishra Jan 2015

Towards Measuring Interventions In Rainfed Areas, Hippu Salk Kristle Nathan, Rajendra, Srijit Mishra

Srijit Mishra

This paper underlines the process through which we have arrived at the indicators for various thematic nodes to measure and evaluate interventions or comprehensive pilots in rainfed areas. We conceptualize a simple four stage process, i.e., ‘objective or goal formulation’, 'means finding', 'targets settings' and 'indicator identification', which we refer to as OMTI (Objective-Means-Target-Indicators) framework. In indicator literature, this kind of framework can be categorized under "thematic framework" or "goal oriented framework". The operationalization of OMTI framework highlights its nuances and brings forth its limitations. In order to overcome some of these limitations, we validate the OMTI framework using the …

Do Prosecutors Use Interview Instructions Of Build Rapport With Child Witnesses?, Elizabeth C. Ahern, Stacia N. Stolzenberg, Thomas D. Lyon Jan 2015

Do Prosecutors Use Interview Instructions Of Build Rapport With Child Witnesses?, Elizabeth C. Ahern, Stacia N. Stolzenberg, Thomas D. Lyon

Stacia N. Stolzenberg

This study examined the quality of interview instructions and rapport-building provided by prosecutors to 168 children aged 5–12 years testifying in child sexual abuse cases, preceding explicit questions about abuse allegations. Prosecutors failed to effectively administer key interview instructions, build rapport, or rely on open-ended narrative producing prompts during this early stage of questioning. Moreover, prosecutors often directed children's attention to the defendant early in the testimony. The productivity of different types of wh- questions varied, with what/how questions focusing on actions being particularly productive. The lack of instructions, poor quality rapport-building, and closed-ended questioning suggest that children may not …

Job Design, Work Engagement And Innovative Work Behavior: A Multi-Level Study On Karasek’S Learning Hypothesis, Stan De Spiegelaere, Guy Van Gyes, Hans De Witte, Geert Van Hootegem Jan 2015

Job Design, Work Engagement And Innovative Work Behavior: A Multi-Level Study On Karasek’S Learning Hypothesis, Stan De Spiegelaere, Guy Van Gyes, Hans De Witte, Geert Van Hootegem

Stan De Spiegelaere

As employees’ behaviour is a crucial factor for organizational success, the question on how to promote the engagement of employees in their work and boost their implication in the innovation process is central for companies. In this article we study this question building on the Karasek model suggesting that employees in jobs with high autonomy and time pressure will be more engaged and more innovative. The results of the multi-level regression analyses confirm that such a combination is associated with high employee innovation. For work engagement, the job autonomy helps in buffering the negative effects of time pressure.

Chapters 1-2 (Drafts) Of Prehistoric Myths In Modern Political Philosophy: Chapter 1-2, Karl Widerquist, Grant Mccall Jan 2015

Chapters 1-2 (Drafts) Of Prehistoric Myths In Modern Political Philosophy: Chapter 1-2, Karl Widerquist, Grant Mccall

Karl Widerquist

These two chapters are early and very preliminary drafts of the first to chapters of the book, "Prehistoric Myths in Modern Political Philosophy." The first chapter sets up what we are trying to do with this research project and previews our findings. The basic argument of the book is that political philosophers make dubious claims about prehistory in theor theories. These claims are poorly (if at all) research even though they are essential premises in many important political theories. The role of the book is both to show that these claims are necessary to support the arguments in influential political …

Dsm-5: The Delayed Demise Of Descriptive Diagnosis, Tomi Gomory Jan 2015

Dsm-5: The Delayed Demise Of Descriptive Diagnosis, Tomi Gomory

Tomi Gomory

In 1980, DSM-III adopted a descriptive approach to psychiatric diagnosis, creating checklists of unwanted behaviors to define and use as required criteria when posing each of several hundred diagnoses. The objective of this novel approach was to validate psychiatry as a scientifically legitimate branch of medicine, by enabling research into hopefully homogeneous groups of patients to pinpoint the implicit hypothesized physiological causes of the disorders the patients were presumably sharing. In each subsequent revision of the DSM including the DSM-5, however, no physiological criteria of any sort are included for any diagnosis, confirming the empirical failure of this attempt to …

Nanotechnology Companies In The United States: A Web-Based Content Analysis Of Companies And Products For Poverty Alleviation, Thomas Woodson Jan 2015

Nanotechnology Companies In The United States: A Web-Based Content Analysis Of Companies And Products For Poverty Alleviation, Thomas Woodson

Thomas Woodson

This study analyzes the goals, nanotechnology experience, corporate social responsibility and products of 50 USA-based companies working with nanotechnology to see if they are developing products that help low-income populations. Out of the top 50 R&D companies that publish and patent nanotechnology research in agri-food, energy and water sectors, 18 of them do not mention nanotechnology on their websites. The other 32 companies discuss nanotechnology in varying degrees. However, only two of the companies relate their nanotechnology R&D to poverty alleviation. Even though few companies refer to poverty alleviation, 30 firms of the sample have some type of corporate social …

Long-Run Consumption Risk And Asset Allocation Under Recursive Utility And Rational Inattention, Yulei Luo, Eric R. Young Jan 2015

Long-Run Consumption Risk And Asset Allocation Under Recursive Utility And Rational Inattention, Yulei Luo, Eric R. Young

Yulei Luo

We study the portfolio decision of a household with limited information-processing capacity (rational inattention or RI) in a setting with recursive utility. We find that rational inattention combined with a preference for early resolution of uncertainty could lead to a significant drop in the share of portfolios held in risky assets, even when the departure from standard expected utility with rational expectations is small. In addition, we show that the equilibrium equity premium increases with the degree of inattention because inattentive investors with recursive utility face greater long-run risk and thus require higher compensation in equilibrium. Our results are robust …
