Slow Information Diffusion And The Inertial Behavior Of Durable Consumption, Yulei Luo, Jun Nie, Eric Young
Slow Information Diffusion And The Inertial Behavior Of Durable Consumption, Yulei Luo, Jun Nie, Eric Young
Yulei Luo
This paper studies the aggregate dynamics of durable and nondurable consumption under slow information diffusion (SID) due to noisy observations and learning within the permanent income framework. We show that SID can significantly improve the model's predictions on the joint behavior of income, durable consumption, and nondurable consumption at the aggregate level. Specifically, we find that SID can significantly improve the model's predictions for: (i) smoothness in durable and nondurable consumption, (ii) autocorrelation of durable consumption, and (iii) contemporaneous correlation between durable and nondurable consumption.
Racial Profiling As Institutional Practice: Theorizing The Experiences Of Black Male Undergraduates, Susan V. Iverson
Racial Profiling As Institutional Practice: Theorizing The Experiences Of Black Male Undergraduates, Susan V. Iverson
Susan V. Iverson
In this paper we draw upon racial profiling literature as an analytic lens with data collected in a qualitative study of Black males at one university. We argue that racial profiling provides a system of assumptions and rules that inform decisions made and attach to interactions between Black males and their faculty, staff, and peers. We conclude with implications for practice and future research.

The Time Cost Of Documents To Trade, Mohammad Amin, Asif Islam
The Time Cost Of Documents To Trade, Mohammad Amin, Asif Islam
Mohammad Amin
The paper shows that the number of documents required to export and import tend to increase the time cost of shipments. However, this relationship is far from simplistic, varying sharply in magnitude depending on the income level and the size of the country. Specifically, the increase in the time cost of increased documentation is much larger for countries that are relatively poor and large in size. One interpretation of this finding is that the relatively rich countries that have more resources and the relatively small countries that rely more on trade invest more in building efficient documentation systems. Hence, increased …

The Problem Of Rationality: Austrian Economics Between Classical Behaviorism And Behavioral Economics (Uncorrected Proof), Mario J. Rizzo
The Problem Of Rationality: Austrian Economics Between Classical Behaviorism And Behavioral Economics (Uncorrected Proof), Mario J. Rizzo
Mario Rizzo
In Part One we establish the rationale and substance of the Robbinsian middle ground – the psychical or mind-dependent character of economics. To accomplish this we explore three post-Wieserian frameworks for Austrian economics: (1) the phenomenological social science of Alfred Schutz; (2) the structure of mind analyzed by Hayek in The Sensory Order; and (3) the later Wittgenstein’s logical analysis of thought. While there are no doubt differences among these approaches we find that they are broadly consistent way of establishing the essential mind-dependency of economics. In Part Two we directly examine the basic issues involved in the characterization of …
The Problematic Welfare Standards Of Behavioral Paternalism, Douglas Glen Whitman, Mario J. Rizzo
The Problematic Welfare Standards Of Behavioral Paternalism, Douglas Glen Whitman, Mario J. Rizzo
Mario Rizzo
Behavioral paternalism raises deep concerns that do not arise in traditional welfare economics. These concerns stem from behavioral paternalism’s acceptance of the defining axioms of neoclassical rationality for normative purposes, despite having rejected them as positive descriptions of reality. We argue (1) that behavioral paternalists have indeed accepted neoclassical rationality axioms as a welfare standard; (2) that economists historically adopted these axioms not for their normative plausibility, but for their usefulness in formal and theoretical modeling; (3) that broadly rational individuals might fail to satisfy the axioms for various reasons, making them unpersuasive as normative criteria; and (4) that even …
A Burning Question: Does Arson Increase When Local House Prices Decline?, Michael D. Eriksen, James M. Carson
A Burning Question: Does Arson Increase When Local House Prices Decline?, Michael D. Eriksen, James M. Carson
Michael D Eriksen
We construct panel data on house prices and the determined cause of 4.8 million individual fires in the United States between 1986 and 2010 to test whether decreases in local housing market prices coincided with increases in arson. Since some insured homeowners may attempt to disguise the actual cause of fire as accidental, we also examine how decreases in local house prices are associated with changes in the total number of fires and the probability of determined causes of accidental fires. For the sample period, our results suggest that declines in local house prices coincided with increases in arson, the …
Developing And Testing A Surveillance Impact Assessment Methodology, David Wright, Michael Friedewald, Raphael Gellert
Developing And Testing A Surveillance Impact Assessment Methodology, David Wright, Michael Friedewald, Raphael Gellert
Michael Friedewald
With the increasing pervasiveness of surveillance, from big companies such as Google and Facebook, as well as from the intelligence agencies, such as the US National Security Agency (NSA) and the UK Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), there is a clear need for a surveillance impact assessment (SIA), a method that addresses not only issues of privacy and data protection, but also ethical, social, economic, and political issues.
The SAPIENT project, funded by the European Commission, and undertaken by a consortium of partners from several European countries, aimed to develop an SIA methodology, based on stake- holder needs and a set …

Open Consent, Biobanking And Data Protection Law: Can Open Consent Be ‘Informed’ Under The Forthcoming Data Protection Regulation?, Dara Hallinan, Michael Friedewald
Michael Friedewald
This article focuses on whether a certain form of consent used by biobanks – open consent – is compatible with the Proposed Data Protection Regulation. In an open consent procedure, the biobank requests consent once from the data subject for all future research uses of genetic material and data. However, as biobanks process personal data, they must comply with data protection law. Data protection law is currently undergoing reform. The Proposed Data Protection Regulation is the culmination of this reform and, if voted into law, will constitute a new legal framework for biobanking. The Regulation puts strict conditions on consent …

Towards Arctic Resource Governance Of Marine Invasive Species, Melina Kourantidou, Brooks Alexandra Kaiser, Linda Fernandez
Melina Kourantidou
Scientific and policy-oriented publications highlighting the magnitude of uncertainty in the changing Arctic and the possibilities for effective regional governance are proliferating, yet it remains a challenging task to examine Arctic marine biodiversity. Limited scientific data are currently available. Through analysis of marine invasions in the Arctic, we work to identify and assess patterns in the knowledge gaps regarding invasive species in the Arctic that affect the ability to generate improved governance outcomes. These patterns are expected to depend on multiple aspects of scientific research into invasive species threats in the Arctic, including the ways in which known marine invasions …

This manuscript describes the important of providing communication course instructors with training focused on cultivating instructor responsibility. Instructor ownership of creating and delivering pedagogically sound courses in an online learning environment is an important but often overlooked concept in online course design. Ultimately, courses should incorporate sound assessment and instructors should be committed to continued refinement o f online learning pedagogy. This essay offers relevant principles for assessing online communication courses and creating assignments that encourage experiential learning and engage the 21s' century learner.

Internationales Drogenregime In Der Bewährung. Herausforderungen Durch Die Drogenpolitische Reformdebatte In Lateinamerika, Günther Maihold

Environment Kuznets Curve For Carbon Emissions: A Cointegration Analysis For Bangladesh, Fazle Rabbi, Delwar Akbar, Sm Zobaidul Kabir
Fazle Rabbi
This article investigates the current status of the association between carbon emissions releases, use of energy, openness of trade and overall output of Bangladesh from its independence to 2012. The research outcomes for Bangladesh show that a robust long-run association is present there along with short-run dynamic adjustment among those variables. The research indicates that environmental degradation in Bangladesh may increase because of high economic growth in future and therefore, policies to tackle environmental pollution are imperative where the use of both market and non-market based management tools is important. Finally, this study provides some future research directions which were …

Checklists And Worker Behavior: A Field Experiment, Henry S. Schneider, C. Kirabo Jackson
Henry S Schneider
We analyze data from a field experiment in which an auto-repair firm provided checklists to mechanics and monitored their use. Revenue was 20 percent higher during the experiment, and the effect is equivalent to that of a 1.6 percentage point (10 percent) commission increase. Checklists appear to boost productivity by serving both as a memory aid and a monitoring technology. Despite the large benefits to the firm, mechanics did not use checklists without the firm directly monitoring their use. We show that a moral hazard can explain why mechanics do not otherwise adopt checklists.

The iSquare Research Program is an arts-informed, visual study of the concept of information, utilizing the draw-and-write technique (Pridmore & Bendelow, 1995). Participants are asked to respond to the question, “What is information?” by drawing upon a 4” by 4” piece of paper, coined an “iSquare.” The ongoing research program explores three questions: 1.) How do people visualize the concept of information?; 2.) How do visual conceptions of information differ among populations?; and 3.) How do these images relate to the traditional conceptions of information made of words? Since 2011, more than 1,000 iSquares have been collected from around the …
Constructing A Shared Identity In Deeply Divided Societies, John M. Nagle
Constructing A Shared Identity In Deeply Divided Societies, John M. Nagle
John M Nagle
In order to bolster sustainable peacebuilding in violently divided societies, a normative suggestion is that efforts should be made to construct a shared public identity that overarches ethnic divisions. A number of different centripetal/transformationist processes are identified as engendering a shared identity in comparison to consociational arrangements, which are accused of institutionalizing ethnic differences and perpetuating conflict. These transformationist approaches essentially rest on the premise that since ethnicity is constructed it can be reconstructed into new shared forms. Looking at Northern Ireland, we argue there are limits to the extent that ethnicity can be reconstructed into shared identities. By analysing …
The Symbiotic Relationship Between Information Retrieval And Informetrics, Dietmar Wolfram
The Symbiotic Relationship Between Information Retrieval And Informetrics, Dietmar Wolfram
Dietmar Wolfram
Informetrics and information retrieval (IR) represent fundamental areas of study within information science. Historically, researchers have not fully capitalized on the potential research synergies that exist between these two areas. Data sources used in traditional informetrics studies have their analogues in IR, with similar types of empirical regularities found in IR system content and use. Methods for data collection and analysis used in informetrics can help to inform IR system development and evaluation. Areas of application have included automatic indexing, index term weighting and understanding user query and session patterns through the quantitative analysis of user transaction logs. Similarly, developments …

Africa In The Age Of Globalization: Perceptions, Misperceptions And Realities, Edward Shizha, Lamine Diallo
Edward Shizha
This is a collection of bold and visionary scholarship that reveals an insightful exposition of re-visioning African development from African perspectives. It provides educators, policy makers, social workers, non-governmental agencies, and development agencies with an interdisciplinary conceptual base that can effectively guide them in planning and implementing programs for socio-economic development in Africa. The book provides up-to-date scholarly research on continental trends on various subjects and concerns of paramount importance to globalisation and development in Africa (politics, democracy, education, gender, technology, global relationships and the role of non-governmental organisations). The authors challenge the familiar paradigms in order to show how …

Pedagogy Of The Dispersed: A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The African Diaspora Phenomenon Through The Human And Social Capital Lens, Charles Kivunja, Edward Shizha
Edward Shizha
With its origin in Greek where ‘diaspora’ as a noun means ‘a dispersion’ or as a verb means to ‘scatter about’, the term is used in this paper to refer to the dispersion or scattering of Africans from their original African homeland and now live in countries other than their own. Indeed some Africans have dispersed from their own countries to other countries in Africa. For the purposes of this paper our analysis focuses on Africans who live outside Africa. This paper explores the African diaspora phenomenon starting from the commercial extraction of Africans as resources to serve as inputs …
