Women’S Menarche Stories From A Multicultural Sample, Ayse K. Uskul Jan 2004

Women’S Menarche Stories From A Multicultural Sample, Ayse K. Uskul

Ayse K Uskul

This paper reports on the findings of a focus group study that examines how women experienced menarche at the personal level and in relation to the larger cultural, religious, and societal environment. Fifty-three women from 34 different countries were recruited in 13 focus groups. At the personal level, menarche stories shared in this study revealed salient themes concerning feelings experienced at the time of menarche, the importance of mother’s reactions to their daughter’s first menstruation, difficulties around understanding the meanings attached to menarche by others, managing menstrual products, and making sense of formal education related to menstruation, and finally the …

Financial Development And Economic Growth In Australia: An Empirical Analysis, James B. Ang Jan 2004

Financial Development And Economic Growth In Australia: An Empirical Analysis, James B. Ang

James B Ang

The paper empirically examines the dynamic relationship between financial development and economic growth in Australia in terms of bank-based and market-based financial structure. A time-series approach using the VAR Model is used to provide evidence for the dynamic relationship. The paper provides empirical evidence on the causal impact of the financial market on the economic growth of the Australian economy. The results suggest that financial intermediaries and financial markets have different impacts on economic growth given their diverse roles in the domestic econ-omy. In particular there is evidence of causality from economic growth to the development of the financial intermediaries. …

Aggregate Consumption Spending, The Stock Market, And Asymmetric Error Correction, Lonnie K. Stevans Jan 2004

Aggregate Consumption Spending, The Stock Market, And Asymmetric Error Correction, Lonnie K. Stevans

Lonnie K. Stevans

In this study, we show how changes in wealth resulting from unanticipated changes in the value of equity holdings begin a process whereby households alter consumption growth in order to close the gap between actual and target spending. Because of changing uncertainty or equity price volatility over the stock market cycle, we found the time path of this adjustment to exhibit near random walk behavior during stock market downturns. Conversely, during “boom” periods, e.g. when the value of equities held by households was greater than the threshold, the growth in consumer spending was quick to eliminate the disparity between actual …

How Do Polish Learners Of English Rate Bilingual And Monolingual Dictionaries?, Robert Lew Jan 2004

How Do Polish Learners Of English Rate Bilingual And Monolingual Dictionaries?, Robert Lew

Robert Lew

The topic of this paper is the evaluation by Polish learners of English of bilingual and monolingual dictionaries used by those learners. Data for the paper come from 712 Polish learners of English representing a broad range of EFL proficiency levels. Subjects were asked to rate two dictionaries: their dictionary of first choice and their dictionary of second choice. The effect of choice as a predictor variable is also explored. A tendency is revealed for the mid-level competence learners to give the lowest ratings to their dictionaries. Monolingual dictionaries were given significantly higher ratings than bilingual dictionaries. Subjects rated dictionaries …

Imagining Alternativas To Global, Corporate, New Economy Academic Capitalism, Gary Rhoades, Alma Maldonado-Maldonado, Imanol Ordorika, Martín Velásquez

Imanol Ordorika

In this article, the authors detail the conditions and patterns of academic capitalism and the new economy in US higher education. Subsequently, a conceptual model is offered for considering the international reach and national and local patterns of academic capitalism. Further, a distinctive Mexican case of entrepreneurialism is offered. The article concludes with a discussion of alternatives for a model of a universidad latinoamericana that is grounded in the historical role of Latin American universities.

Ramiro Esqueda-Walle

The Scope Of Tolerance And Its Moral Reasoning, Raphael Cohen-Almagor Jan 2004

The Scope Of Tolerance And Its Moral Reasoning, Raphael Cohen-Almagor

raphael cohen-almagor

This essay aims to consider the scope of tolerance and its moral reasoning. I first discuss the reluctance of prominent philosophers to prescribe boundaries to liberty and tolerance. I then focus attention on Rawls’ discussion on tolerance, which I find quite disappointing, yet argue that his line of reasoning on the question of tolerating the intolerant contributed to the very fashionable consequentialist approach. After criticizing the consequentialist reasoning I introduce an alternative approach: the principled reasoning. I explain that much of the liberal reasoning is inspired by the fear of sliding down the slippery slope, and finally turn to discuss …

Crisis Management In The Eastern Mediterranean: Implications For Policymakers, Neophytos Loizides

Neophytos Loizides

Los Movimientos Sociales En Un Mundo Globalizado: ¿Alguna Novedad?, Salvador Marti I Puig

Salvador Marti i Puig

Export Credit Agencies And Climate Change: What Can They Do About It?, Marcus Schaper Jan 2004

Export Credit Agencies And Climate Change: What Can They Do About It?, Marcus Schaper

Marcus Schaper

Among the chief contributors to the anthropogenic causes of global climate change are carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels. Though the sources of these emissions are clearly identified, global carbon dioxide output from energy generation is still on the rise. Many industrialized countries have achieved a slow down in the increase of their emissions or even a reduction. However, emissions in developing countries are on the rise. A key challenge is to create incentives to turn around the trend of ever increasing emissions in the countries that are not obliged to reductions under the Kyoto protocol. …

Health As Foreign Policy: A U.S.-German Dialogue On Governance And Global Health., Marcus Schaper Jan 2004

Health As Foreign Policy: A U.S.-German Dialogue On Governance And Global Health., Marcus Schaper

Marcus Schaper

Health has become an issue with significant implications for economies, trade, and security in today’s globalized world. Epidemics like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) carry an impact far beyond the epicenters of the disease. The spread of HIV-AIDS leads to fundamental changes in social cohesion and state structures with far reaching international consequences. Bioterrorism with its potential for rapid pandemic poses a threat to many countries of the world. In a globalized world, health has developed into an issue of soft power. It has become part of deliberations on foreign policy and of the development of civil society and democracy. …

Risky Sexual Behaviour And Incentives: The Impact Of New Therapies On Hiv Prevention, Stéphane Mechoulan, Pierre-Yves Geoffard Jan 2004

Risky Sexual Behaviour And Incentives: The Impact Of New Therapies On Hiv Prevention, Stéphane Mechoulan, Pierre-Yves Geoffard

Stéphane Mechoulan

This article studies the interaction between two individual decisions in the con- text of sexually transmitted diseases: on the one hand, the choice of risk level, on the other hand, the decision to get tested. Our angle here is economic epidemio- logy, which aims at identifying the essential arbitrages that involve private deci- sions. Since testing opens access to treatments fora disease, it reduces the private cost of risk taking, all the more so when available treatments are more efficacious. From this, it stems that improvements in treatments can spuran increase in the risk level, by diminishing the cost associated …

Law Serials Pricing And Mergers: A Portfolio Approach, Mark J. Mccabe Jan 2004

Law Serials Pricing And Mergers: A Portfolio Approach, Mark J. Mccabe

Mark J McCabe

Using data from more than 400 legal serials, I estimate the impact of six publisher mergers on law serial prices during the period, 1990-2000. The results suggest that merger-related price increases were substantial during this period, even after accounting for secular price trends. Furthermore, these merger effects occurred across a broadly-defined portfolio of serial titles consisting of legal encyclopedias and treatises. For other types of serials, such as newsletters and looseleaf services, these effects were not observed. Based on the portfolio demand behavior of buyers, I offer an explanation for this result based on the degree of product differentiation at …
