China's Dialectic, Joyce Ng Miss

Joyce Ng Miss

In contemporary times, economic development and the reconciliation of environmental protection has been of increasing concern to the sustainability of the economy. This paper attempts to discuss China’s symbiotic relationship of economic progress and the environment based on extensive literature reviews. With decades of economic pursuits and progress, a mirrored upward trend of environmental degradation ensues. This paper then extends towards China’s current ambiguous environmental governance and hopes to aid in addressing the subsequent research question, of how China can effectively strengthen its environmental governance and protection through sociological empirical methods to boost the effectiveness of their implementation processes at …

Literature Review_Finding That Perfect Match: Changing Attitudes And Dynamics In The Matchmaking And Marriage Markets, Chwen Yiing Lim

ChwenY Lim

In a society that attaches great importance to marriage and stresses family as its basic unit, the marriage market in China – where men and women compete with one another to find their life companions – is experiencing profound changes in its landscape and dynamics. To understand what gave rise to the current state of Chinese marriage scene, it is imperative to examine this phenomenon against the backdrop of two major national policies – i.e. economic reforms and one-child policy – that have significantly affected China in the last 30 years. The vital interplay between both policies has unfurled a …

Understanding Secrets Of Sustainability Through Triz Philosophy, Umakant Mishra Apr 2014

Understanding Secrets Of Sustainability Through Triz Philosophy, Umakant Mishra

Umakant Mishra

After creating the weapons that can destroy the world, the next challenge of man is not to win an enemy but to survive the disasters. The modern man realizes that the worst challenges to face are the manmade disasters. While the nature has given us a well-disposed atmosphere to grow we are spoiling the natural resources through various anti-environmental activities. Our partial knowledge on development has taken us through a so-called development, which is neither eco-friendly nor sustainable. It is therefore important to control our own activities and behavior to minimize their negative effects on other adjacent systems and environment. …

Evaluating Wetlands Along The Libyan Mediterranean Coastline, Mansour M. Elbabour, Esam O. Abdulsamad Apr 2014

Evaluating Wetlands Along The Libyan Mediterranean Coastline, Mansour M. Elbabour, Esam O. Abdulsamad

Mansour M Elbabour

Nature conservation efforts in Libya focus mainly on the protection of some forest and wildlife areas in small designated national parks in the Jabal al-Akhdar and few other locations in the west of the country. However, wetlands did not receive equal recognition. Perhaps, lack of environmental awareness and the absence of functional and legal definitions of wetlands and their habitats in the country contributed to their exclusion from national protection programs and, consequently, to their degradation. Evaluation of wetlands, both within and outside urban areas, conducted as part of the Designation and Classification of Nature Reserves project in Libya, represents …

An Academic Parable: Robert W. Fogel's Raft, Heitor Moura Filho

Heitor Moura Filho

The book Time on the Cross: The Economics of American Negro Slavery, by Robert W. Fogel and Stanley L. Engerman achieved great fame as a revolutionary interpretation of North American slavery, even though at the time it was criticized in detail by specialists in quantitative economic history. We believe that to quote it as a pioneering quantitative study of slavery has become an academic “meme”, which does not adequately reflect the severe criticism suffered by the book during the years following its publication. This text looks back to the book’s release and the subsequent debates in the ideological and methodological …

Critical And Creative Thinking And Structured Analytic Methodologies: From “Think Flow” To “Work Flow”, James L. Harper

James L Harper

Training prepares for the “known.” Education prepares us for the “unknown.” That unknown should spark greater analytic dialogue within the intelligence enterprise regarding what our analyst training and education baseline should encompass as well as address the training strategies necessary to drive the Army intelligence community to a more refined analytic point. Before delving into what those analytic swing mechanics consist of, let us first review the premium placed on our analysis today and the operational and intelligence processes in order to better understand how and when our analytics come into play.

This session …

The Two-Seat Solution, Hippu Salk Kristle Nathan Mar 2014

The Two-Seat Solution, Hippu Salk Kristle Nathan

Hippu Salk Kristle Nathan

The article highlights the fallacy in the system of provisioning more than one constituency/seat to a single candidate in Lok Sabha or Assembly elections. It gives instances of how the veteran leaders have historically exploited this system. This is a violation of principle of equity, justice, and fairness as enshrined in the Constitution. This reminds the Orwellian saying: "All are equal, but some are more equal than others." The article proposes that the only way out is make a leader's candidature void if he or she files nomination from more than one constituency.

The principal objective of the current work is to analyze a corpus comprising 10 scientific and 10 political texts. The Ideational Grammatical Metaphor framework was used to carry out an analysis on these texts to pinpoint their similarities and dissimilarities. The analysis indicates that …
