Glen Mays

Practice-based research networks (PBRNs) provide powerful mechanisms for implementing research studies that evaluate the health and economic effects of delivery system innovations. This presentation reviews strategies, emerging findings, and lessons learned from PBRNs and related studies conducted in U.S. public health settings. We give special focus to studies that examine multi-organizational and cross-sectoral strategies for population health improvement.

Global War, Biopower And The Rise Of Drone Warfare In The 21st Century, Durante Barringer Apr 2014

Global War, Biopower And The Rise Of Drone Warfare In The 21st Century, Durante Barringer

duranteb@ymail.com

In this senior project I assert that 9/11 was a turning point for the U.S. that changed the way it views warfare and security, which consequently allowed for the abuse of law and power around the globe, specifically in countries such as Yemen, Pakistan and Somalia. This abuse will be explained using three frameworks: constitutional and international law as defined in the Office of Legal Counsel white paper; philosophically through the lens of biopower and other concepts from Michel Foucault, Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri; and lastly I will discuss the issues of the drone campaign using case studies from …

Global And Regional Determinants Of Regime Type: Pakistan, Jakob A Friedman Apr 2014

Global And Regional Determinants Of Regime Type: Pakistan, Jakob A Friedman

Jakob A Friedman

Abstract: Traditional fields of study for international relations (IR) scholars have revolved around the question of how regimes interact with one another in the international sphere. This paper deals with answering the question of how regimes emerge in the first place. To this end, there are two competing narratives in IR, which seek to explain the origins of regime type. The first is that regimes are shaped entirely by a given nations regional security concerns, the other is that regimes emerge in response to global political paradigms. Throughout the exploration of the political history of Pakistan, this paper seeks to …

Preventing Cold War: Militarization In The Southernmost Continent And The Antarctic Treaty System's Fading Effectiveness, Dillon A. Redding

Dillon A Redding

This note argues that the preservation of Antarctica for peaceful research and internationally cooperative activity as envisioned originally by the Antarctic Treaty in 1961 has gone unrealized amid growing international interest in the strategic advantages offered by Antarctica, including the possibility of large swathes of mineral deposits and optimal locations for satellite stations. Part 1 describes the motivations behind the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) and outlines the relevant provisions of the Antarctic Treaty. Part 2 examines the military advantages to a state presence in Antarctica and the ways in which the ATS allows for such a presence to be carried …

Catastrophic Incident Search And Rescue Lessons From The 2013 Colorado Floods, Thomas Miner, Richard N. Bradley

Richard N Bradley

The response to the Colorado floods is a textbook example of how to respond to catastrophic disasters Responders from hundreds of different organizations came together to form a single coordinated, unified command structure that resulted in the rapid and effective evacuation and rescue of hundreds of people in just three days. Local responders performed hundreds of highly dangerous rescues during the height of the storm. They established incident command at the county level using type 3 incident command teams. Family Ties: Occupational Responses To Cope With A Household Income Shock, Maria Cesira Urzi Brancati Apr 2014

Family Ties: Occupational Responses To Cope With A Household Income Shock, Maria Cesira Urzi Brancati

Maria Cesira Urzi Brancati

In this paper we analyse household members’ reactions in case of unforeseen negative income shocks due to a transition into unemployment and/or into income support. More specifically, we estimate the impact of an income loss suffered by one household member on the probability that another household member – not necessarily the wife - transit from out of the labour force into employment or into workforce. Since in a lifecycle setting the labour supply of secondary workers is also affected by credit constraints, we take into account financial wealth and liabilities as well as a measure of household illiquidity due to …

Fuel Poverty And The Energy Benefits System: The Italian Case, Paola Valbonesi, Raffaele Miniaci, Carlo Scarpa

Paola Valbonesi

In this paper we discuss a number of ways to define and measure the affordability of energy consumption, and we examine the emergence of fuel poverty in Italy in the period from 1998 to 2011. The paper examines the eligibility criteria for claiming the benefits available to support energy consumption for vulnerable families and it identifies the potential beneficiaries. The study assesses the appropriateness of the eligibility criteria by comparing the population targeted by the policy with the population actually living in fuel poverty. A simulation exercise, using the hypothetical scenario most likely to result in energy benefits being made …

The Data Dance, Christine Borgman Apr 2014

The Data Dance, Christine Borgman

Christine L. Borgman

Despite first appearing in an academic publication only in 2003, the term “big data” has swiftly become central to technology and social science. While bearing deep histories, big data is clearly linked to developments in computational storage, algorithmic analysis, mobile devices, and online sociality. But big data is also debated in the blogosphere, portrayed in mass media, discussed in everyday life. The goal of this workshop is to take these multiple meanings and practices of big data seriously by placing them in conversation with ethnographic methods. Big data has sometimes been said to imply the “death of ethnographic methods” because …

Outreach Practices Of A Small College Counseling Center: A Comprehensivemodel To Serve The College Community, Jessica R. Ferriero

Jessica R Ferriero

Over the past 10 years college counseling centers (CCCs) have been urged to broaden their focus considerably and to serve the entire campus community due to increases in student mental health issues. Engaging in outreach efforts is one way to address campus wide needs. However, few research efforts have been conducted to systematically investigate how outreach is practiced at a small college. The dialogue around outreach has focused on single programs at large institutions rather than the network of interventions that occur on a campus. The purpose of this study is to understand the web of relationships between a counseling …
