Hazard Rates Of Young Male And Female Workers--Recent Developments (Working Paper #51), John Donohue Jan 1986

Hazard Rates Of Young Male And Female Workers--Recent Developments (Working Paper #51), John Donohue

John Donohue

This paper will explore whether this tenure differential has persisted after a decade in which the commitment of women to the paid workforce increased substantially. To answer this question, I began by examining the first full-time job for "recent school leavers" from the National Longitudinal Studies youth cohort over the four year period from 1979-1982.2 Tables 1 and 2 present summary statistics for the resulting male and female samples, in which full-time jobs are defined as having a usual workweek of 20 or more hours. The number of male and female workers included in the sample are quite close: 2305 …

Strategic Planning Of Seaport Development In A Global Economy: Observations Of An Executive Port Director, Herman L. Boschken Jan 1986

Strategic Planning Of Seaport Development In A Global Economy: Observations Of An Executive Port Director, Herman L. Boschken

Herman L. Boschken

Seaport management is central both to the use of coastal resources and to the needs of a global economy. As a major point of supply-chain activity along the coast and as a source of pollution, ports need to be administered strategically to provide the greatest benefit according to economic and environmental demands. This article is an annotated conversation that provides a practitioner's insight into the management of change along the coastal zone. To address the problem, we probe organization theory for new insight and attempt to apply concepts to practice.

In 1984-85, I worked as a correspondent for the Albuquerque Journal. I covered a variety of subjects - local government, politics, police & courts, business, etc. - mostly breaking news, but occasionally feature stories. This is one of the lengthier articles I wrote during that time.

In 1984-85, I worked as a correspondent for the Albuquerque Journal. I covered a variety of subjects - local government, politics, police & courts, business, etc. - mostly breaking news, but occasionally feature stories. This is one of the nicest feature stories I was able to do. I will never forget what it was like to be inside the Norm Petty Studio in downtown Clovis. Going in there was like stepping back in time - the piano and recording equipment at the ready, just like Buddy Holly was going to step through the curtain and sing again. It was amazing. …

Mobs Of Romantic Moths Disrupt Radio Broadcasts, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr

Douglas J. Swanson, Ed.D APR

In 1984-85, I worked as a correspondent for the Albuquerque Journal. The "romantic moths" story was picked up by the AP wire and went world-wide. I heard the story on National Public Radio. I was told the story was also picked up by the BBC. Several people who lived in different parts of the country told me they read or heard the story. It was exciting for me (not even 24 years old) to know my story got so much play.

The Paramenstruum And Negative Moods In Normal Young Women, Gregory J. Boyle Jan 1985

The Paramenstruum And Negative Moods In Normal Young Women, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

The present study investigated the effects of depressogenic statements on 154 normal young women, in relation to the late luteal phase of the female monthly cycle (paramenstruum). The women were allocated to a depressive-induction group or to either of two non-treatment groups. Multivariate ANOVAs indicated that paramenstrual women given the depressogenic statements reported more negative post-induction mood states than did other women. Four of the 12 mood states measured by the Differential Emotions Scale (DES-IV) were significantly elevated for the paramenstrual women in the depressive-induction group only (viz. Sadness, Hostility, Fear and Shame subscales). It was concluded that paramenstrual women …

Sequential Bargaining Mechanisms, Peter Cramton Jan 1985

Sequential Bargaining Mechanisms, Peter Cramton

Peter Cramton

The introductory discussion presented in this chapter considers the simplest type of sequential bargaining games in which the players’ time preferences are described by known and fixed discount rates. I begin by characterizing the class of perfect bargaining mechanisms, which satisfy the desirable properties of incentive compatibility (i.e., each player reports his type truthfully), individual rationality (i.e., every potential player wishes to play the game), and sequential rationality (i.e., it is never common knowledge that the mechanism induced over time is dominated by an alternative mechanism). It is shown that ex post efficiency is unobtainable by any incentive-compatible and individually …

O Desenvolvimento Urbano De Quito Entre Suas Crises Urbanas Mais Recentes, Fernando Carrión Mena Jan 1985

O Desenvolvimento Urbano De Quito Entre Suas Crises Urbanas Mais Recentes, Fernando Carrión Mena

From Balconies To Tanks: Post Junta Civil-Military Relations In Greece, Constantine P. Danopoulos Jan 1985

From Balconies To Tanks: Post Junta Civil-Military Relations In Greece, Constantine P. Danopoulos

Constantine P. Danopoulos

This article analyzes the reasons why praetorianism in Greece has not been followed by more of the same, as appears to be the case in most states that have experienced military rule. After a careful examination of the available data, it was concluded that having learned their lesson, both the civilian and military elites have played a role in keeping the armed forces away from the levers of political authority, the civilians by following carrot and stick policies designed not to encroach on the military's corporate interests, and the armed forces by accepting the view that they can best protect …

Academic Library Services: The Literature Of Innovation, Jo Bell Whitlatch, Judy Reynolds Jan 1985

Academic Library Services: The Literature Of Innovation, Jo Bell Whitlatch, Judy Reynolds

Jo Bell Whitlatch

Innovation has the potential for increasing the effectiveness of information service. As a result of this interest in innovation, organizational theorists have begun to explore the effect of organizational design upon flexibility, creativity, and productivity of organizations. A review of existing literature, however, provides no comprehensive theory of organizational innovation. Research on organizational design and innovation in libraries could contribute to the systematic study of the impact of organization structure . Studies by Howard and Luquire indicate that traditional library organizations may inhibit change as well as the reexamination of values and service. Further study is needed to determine how …
