The direct-historical approach in archaeology assumes the existence of an analogous relationship between historic accounts and prehistoric data, serving to establish cultural identity under the basis of cultural continuity. In this article, Dr. Waldo Wedel uses the direct-historical approach to review some preliminary findings of archaeological investigations undertaken as part of an early effort to study the Pawnee culture of eastern Nebraska. The University of Nebraska Archeological Survey was established in 1929, led by Dr. W. D. Strong, in an attempt to better understand prehistoric Pawnee culture. In the present study, an attempt was made to investigate the relief situation in Nebraska. The aim was (1) to determine how public relief funds were administered in the various counties of the state before the beginning of federal participation in relief, and what changes, if any, had come about after the federal relief agencies began to function, and also what volunteer relief agencies were available to supplement county relief in each case; (2) to determine, so far as possible, the actual amounts that were spent and for what purposes, and also the amounts of goods distributed by each county …

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
This study of farm families in selected districts of Nebraska was undertaken in order to obtain information regarding the total money value of family living and the proportion of the total used for each of the principal groups of goods. A further purpose was to measure the adequacy of the living provided. The study was begun in January, 1931, and continued through the year 1933. The districts selected included Cass and Fillmore counties throughout the three-year period, and to these Buffalo county was added at the beginning of 1932.
