Fast And Furious: The Influence Of Implicit Aggression, Premeditation, And Provoking Situations On Malevolent Creativity, Daniel J. Harris, Roni Reiter-Palmon
Psychology Faculty Publications
Being intentionally harmful in original ways has been termed 'malevolent creativity.' The empirical study of malevolent creativity is still in its infancy, so developing a strong foundation of its antecedents is paramount. Three factors were identified as potentially influencing the generation of malevolently creative ideas: implicit aggression, which is aggression that is beyond one’s conscious awareness; premeditation, a facet of impulsivity that pertains to the degree of planning and forethought an individual engages in before acting; and situations that condone or otherwise provoke the use of malevolent creativity. Consistent with our hypotheses, and in accordance with the theory of trait …

Factors Influencing Male Millennials To Become Professional Librarians, Heidi Blackburn
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
This case study investigates factors influencing Millennial men to become professional librarians. A grounded theory study was conducted using Kanter’s theory of “tokenism” to frame an investigation of factors influencing men’s decisions to enroll in library and information science graduate programs. The central framework investigates how tokenism explains the presence of Millennial males currently enrolled in library and information science graduate programs with the goal to become professional librarians.

OMAHA – Recently released 2013 births data show that U.S. fertility rates among major racial and ethnic groups are now much more similar than in the recent past. This is in contrast to the perception that Hispanic fertility rates are vastly above those among Blacks and Whites.

Dating And Sexuality Among Minority Adolescents With Disabilities: An Application Of Sociocultural Theory, Kristen Faye Linton, Heidi Adams Rueda
Social Work Faculty Publications
Adolescents with disabilities, American Indians, Hispanics, and African Americans are more likely to experience victimization and pregnancy as teens. This study explored ethnic and racial minority youth with disabilities’ dating and sexual experiences from the perspectives of social workers using Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory. Thirteen in-depth interviews were conducted with master’s degree–holding high school social work practitioners. Social workers described family beliefs and practices, socioeconomic status, special education, historical influences, and resiliency as aspects of adolescents’ lives that impacted their dating and sexuality. Social workers’ dialogue concerning family beliefs and attitudes toward abusive relationships were interpreted as internally oriented signs used …

Integrating The Principles Of Effective Intervention Into Batterer Intervention Programming: The Case For Moving Toward More Evidence-Based Programming, Dana L. Radatz, Emily M. Wright
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
The majority of batterer intervention program (BIP) evaluations have indicated they are marginally effective in reducing domestic violence recidivism. Meanwhile, correctional programs used to treat a variety of offenders (e.g., substance users, violent offenders, and so forth) that adhere to the “principles of effective intervention” (PEI) have reported significant reductions in recidivism. This article introduces the PEI—the principles on which evidence-based practices in correctional rehabilitation are based—and identifies the degree to which they are currently integrated into BIPs. The case is made that batterer programs could be more effective if they incorporate the PEI. Recommendations for further integration of the …

Buffering Role Of Perceptions Of Work-Life Balance On The Relationship Between External Obligations And Health, Benedict J. Fern, Lisa Leahy Scherer
Buffering Role Of Perceptions Of Work-Life Balance On The Relationship Between External Obligations And Health, Benedict J. Fern, Lisa Leahy Scherer
Psychology Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
The study proposed that perceptions of work-life balance (WLB) among employed college students is a critical antecedent of student health. We also predicted and found evidence suggesting that how students perceive their life demands influences WLB, with WLB being enhanced for those perceiving life-demands positively and being undermined for those with negative views of their life demands. In this online study of 119 working college students, we found that WLB completely mediated the effect of external obligations on health. Specifically, health outcomes were higher among employed students when they perceived their external obligations as providing balance in their lives.

Under current Nebraska law, a youth in Nebraska should be placed in a secure detention facility for only two reasons: (1) “immediate and urgent necessity for the protection of such juvenile or the person or property of another or (2) if it appears that such juvenile is likely to flee the jurisdiction of the court” (Rev. Stat. § 43-251.01(5)).
In the State of Nebraska, the Office of Juvenile Probation Administration screens youth using the Nebraska Juvenile Intake Screening Risk Assessment prior to making a determination whether to detain the youth. The assessment is referred to in this report as the …

Chancellor’s Speeches
Good afternoon, and welcome to the 2015 State of the University Address.
On August 26, 2015, the Omaha World-Herald published an editorial titled: “Mavs move to the big time.” The region’s largest newspaper said this of our university:
“There’s something deeper brewing, a sense of Maverick pride.”
If you walk around UNO today, in very little time, you will feel the pride and the momentum thriving in this place we call home. The spirit among students, faculty, and staff is unlike anything I have witnessed – or felt – in my forty years as a Maverick.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have been touted as means of increasing economic development by providing improvements in the lives of people where the use of technology leads to better livelihoods. Despite the high access and use of ICTs in the United States, high unemployment and poverty rates among Native Americans and African Americans continues to rise while deepening existing income inequalities. Through a framing analysis of Native American and African American microentrepreneurs, this paper investigates the use of ICTs in six micro-enterprises. Our findings reveal strong community and infrastructure frames in Native American micro-enterprises and their use of Information …

In 1996, a coordinated community response (CCR) was formally established in a mid-sized Midwestern city to improve the criminal justice response to intimate partner violence (IPV). Data for this study included all IPV-related incidents to which the local police department responded since the establishment of the CCR for a fourteen year period. Effective CCRs provide for IPV offender accountability through citation and prosecution of IPV-related crimes. Concerns about demographic variables affecting citation and prosecution rates have been identified in the literature. Compared to national statistics, gender differences were consistent but higher citation and conviction rates were identified in this community. …

Colorado’S Legalization Of Medicinal Marijuana: The Effects On Nebraska’S Law Enforcement And Local Jail System, Jared Ellison, Ryan E. Spohn
Colorado’S Legalization Of Medicinal Marijuana: The Effects On Nebraska’S Law Enforcement And Local Jail System, Jared Ellison, Ryan E. Spohn
Reports
Purpose: Examine trends in law enforcement and corrections related to the possession and sale of marijuana in Nebraska subsequent to the legalization of medicinal marijuana in Colorado. Comparison groups of counties: We are assuming that the impact of marijuana in Colorado will be most substantial for Nebraska counties bordering Colorado. We assume that the next strongest impact will be for Nebraska counties along the I-80 corridor. The least impact of Colorado’s marijuana laws should be found in our “control counties” which neither border Colorado nor contain I-80.

Colorado’S Legalization Of Medicinal Marijuana: The Effects On Nebraska’S Law Enforcement And Local Jail System, Jared M. Ellison, Ryan E. Spohn
Reports
With the passage of Amendment 20 in 2000 and Amendment 64 in 2012, Colorado legalized the medicinal and recreational use of marijuana. Subsequently, Nebraskan law enforcement agencies in border counties have reported increases in arrests and jail admissions for marijuana-related offenses. In response, the Nebraska Legislature passed Legislative Resolution 520 to study potential increased costs incurred by criminal justice agencies in border counties.
In order to better understand how Colorado drug policy may have affected counties along the border, we compared trends in marijuana-related criminal justice activity among county agencies following the enactment of both Amendments. Border county arrests, jail …
