An Exploratory Study Of Adolescents' Communicative A Ttitudes, Perceptions Of Behavior, And Life Change Events As Potential Factors In Development Of Essential Hypertension, Susan Heath Falvo
Student Work
In the past 50 years, social scientists and medical researchers have explored many aspects of human behavior and the psyche which appeared related to various physical disorders. This endeavor evolved into a discipline known as "psychosomatic medicine." Methodologies and perspectives within this discipline have varied widely over the years and many studies have yielded Inconclusive findings (Lipowski, 1977; Lazarus, 1980). However, a review of the psychosomatic literature reveals a t least one common dimension: the nature of one's face-to-face transactions is vitally linked to one's physical well-being.
One medical researcher who described the relationship between human Interaction and physiological processes …

Evaluation/Reflection
Today, evaluation concepts and methods are widely available to those who plan and administer student volunteer programs. Unfortunately, however, evaluation has all too often been carried out-and written about-in ways that have robbed it of its usefulness to people dealing with the realities of day-to-day program operation. Evaluation has thus acquired the reputation among practitioners of being too complex, too costly, too time-consuming, even too threatening to be of much practical value.

Computers And Small Local Governments: Uses And Users, Donald F. Norris
Computers And Small Local Governments: Uses And Users, Donald F. Norris
Publications
This article examines the adoption and use of computer technology by cities under 50,000 and counties under 100,000 in seven plains and mountain states. Smaller local governments were found to lag considerably behind their larger counterparts in computer adoption and extent of use. However, pat terns of use were not substantially different, with basic "housekeeping" functions being the most frequently automated.
Computer adoption was associated with size, government form and type, and metropolitan status. No relationship was found between financial status and computer adoption. Most governments used in-house computers, and most of these systems were minicomputers. The frequency of microcomputer …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Employment of Black and Hispanic Police Officers," by Sam Walker.
Employment of black and Hispanic police officers in the 50 largest cities in the United States falls short of desirable levels. For both racial groups, employment levels are only half of a hypothetical ideal level. Only two of 50 police departments have achieved a high level of equal employment opportunity compliance with respect to both racial groups. Several police departments have made significant progress in minority employment in recent years, either as a result of voluntary or court-ordered affirmative action plans. …

Use Of Radio To Provide Models And Reinforcers In Behavior Therapy: Increasing Compliant Behavior In Retarded Children, Richard Warner
Use Of Radio To Provide Models And Reinforcers In Behavior Therapy: Increasing Compliant Behavior In Retarded Children, Richard Warner
Student Work
Our age is an electronic one; electronic gadgetry has proliferated in the home, and modern media devices, especially radio and television with their continuous barrage of information and programming have been long taken for granted. Children learn much from radio and television, acquiring a variety of information from these electronic sources which is reflected in their dress, speech and musical preferences (Haney & Ullmer, 1975; Potter, 1978a Reeves & Miller, 1978). Indeed a great deal of controversy has become associated with determining what sorts of things children have been learning from media (e.g. Lefrancois, 1973). It is estimated young children …

A Meta-Analysis On Experience Based Career Education, Ronald B. Bucknam, Sheara G. Brand
A Meta-Analysis On Experience Based Career Education, Ronald B. Bucknam, Sheara G. Brand
Special Topics, General
Our meta-analysis of 80 evaluations of Experience Based Career Education (EBCE) programs shows that EBCE works. Students not only scored significant gains in career, life attitude, and academic skills during their EBCE experience, but they also showed significantly greater gains in all three of those outcome areas than comparison students who received the regular high school curriculum. The positive statistical significance of the findings was so large that we developed a new index, called the "Basic Index of Strength" or the BIS, in order to discuss and compare differences in the strength of the findings.
