A 1983 study found that patterns of computer use among small local governments (cities under 50,000 and counties under 100 ,000) in seven plains and mountains states were not substantially different from the patterns of computing detected in earlier studies of larger governments. The 1983 study also found that, among other things, basic "housekeeping" functions were the most frequently automated activities; that computer adoption was associated with governmental size, form, type, and metropolitan status; and that most governments owned in-house minicomputers.

The Omaha Legal Aid Society contacted the Center for Applied Urban Research to help assess the housing conditions of clients who had applied for legal aid with a Douglas County general assistance (GA) problem within the past 18 months. Legal Aid wanted to know what proportion of these clients were living in housing that was below minimum health and decency standards.

Over the past two years, the Foster Parent Training project, in close cooperation with the Department of Social Services, has been successful in training over 1,000 foster parents and caseworkers in the Basic and Adolescent curricula. A statewide network capable of providing on-going support to local foster parents has been developed. In addition to the 16 regional trainers, over 55 local people interested in foster care have participated as co-trainers. The involvement of other local resource people such as judges, counselors, caseworkers, and attorneys has increased the number involved in training even more. This proposed study is in response to a request from the Council Bluffs Senior Citizens' Center Board and staff to gather information from the senior citizens in Council Bluffs concerning the types of programs and activities they would like to see provided by the Senior Citizens' Center. The study will (1) gather survey research information from the senior citizens of Council Bluffs, (2) provide information for program planning and development, (3) provide geographic and demographic information about the types of programs desired by different groupings of the elderly, and (4) provide a data base that can be periodically updated.

Metro Area Transit (MAT), the operator of the bus system in the Omaha metropolitan area, perceived an acceleration of a continuing long term trend of reduced ridership. This report presents an analysis of computing among local governmental agencies in southeastern Nebraska. The data were collected via telephone interviews with 219 agencies during December, 1983.
