Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Socioeconomic Status and Educational Expenditures in Nebraska," by Robert Henningsen.

In the study of political science it is easy to become preoccupied with the descriptions of political institutions, behaviors and processes. Therefore, political scientists have frequently overlooked the importance of socioeconomic forces in shaping public policy. There seems to be no great mystery in accounting for public policy by looking inside the political system. However, the relationship between socioeconomic forces and public policy is less clearly understood.

Locus Of Control, Schedule Of Reinforcement, And The Attribution Of Freedom In The Reinforcing Agent, Mary Piechowski Apr 1977

Locus Of Control, Schedule Of Reinforcement, And The Attribution Of Freedom In The Reinforcing Agent, Mary Piechowski

Student Work

Attributions of freedom and the probability of ingratiating to another were assessed in terms of the unpredictability of the reinforcement schedule used by the other and the locus of control of the observer using videotapes. Internal subjects viewing.a situation involving either 0%, 10%, 50%, 90% or 100% reinforcement saw more freedom when less reinforcement occurred. In contrast, external subjects saw more freedom in the unpredictable situations (10%, 50%, 90%) but saw little difference between the 0% and; 100% situations. The effect of variations in reinforcement strategy was investigated in a broader context, as well, using sixteen bi-polar trait adjectives. Several …

The U.S. Congress, through the findings of the National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism, holds that alcohol abuse is the nation's greatest drug problem, asserting that it warps nine million lives and costs approximately $28 billion per year. There are 95 million drinkers in the U.S. most of whom drink alcohol without harm, but approximately five percent of adult Americans have serious drinking problems and are the source of much personal grief and huge cost to the nation (New York Times Review, 1973: 71).

Conceptual Systems Theory And Cognitive Complexity, Thomas T. Colyer Mar 1977

Conceptual Systems Theory And Cognitive Complexity, Thomas T. Colyer

Student Work

The major function of this study was to assess differences in interpersonal cognitive complexity among the four belief systems specified by Harvey’s Conceptual Systems Theory. In addition, criticism is offered of many of the more commonly used indicators of cognitive complexity (e.g. Bieri, 1955) since they tend to identify cognitive complexity with cognitive differentiation. Herein is offered an alternative method of measuring cognitive complexity which is seen as indicating both differentiation and integration. The study used 54 graduate and undergraduate students, of which 35 were females and 19 were males. The alternative method of calculating cognitive complexity relies upon Hinkle’s …

Although the terms condominium and townhome are commonly used interchangeably, they refer to related and yet distinct concepts. Condominium refers to a title concept under which the owner of a domicile holds title to the living space but not to the land surrounding that space or the land upon which the living space is situated . The land is jointly owned by members of the owners' association who share the responsibility for maintenance, improvement, and control of common areas. The condominium concept can …

This report presents data from a ten-page questionnaire mailed in Fall 1975 to all households on the "community list" maintained by the Omaha Jewish Federation. Responses were received from 1,165 of …

The unique diversity of our cultural heritage and background is slowly but surely being recognized as a valuable asset for our country, one to be cherished and shared. But the very richness and diversity of our heritage make it difficult for the classroom teacher or the college professor to acquire an understanding of the many groups who have contributed so much to the development of our nation.

The Role Of Cognitive Differentiation In Conceptual Systems Theory, Mary Flume Dec 1976

The Role Of Cognitive Differentiation In Conceptual Systems Theory, Mary Flume

Student Work

A cognitive approach to theory and research in personality proposes that individuals develop relatively enduring cognitive schemas for experiencing and organizing their .social world. Cognitive schemas are templates through which information is filtered or transformed.

It may be understood that cognitive personality theory emphasises the structure of cognition rather than its content. Such an emphasis is based on the assumption that structural variables are relatively enduring and invariant across situations, whereas the content of personality is expected to fluctuate markedly. Cognitive personality theory should provide the researcher with an efficient basis for describing the actions of a person and lead …

The Effectiveness Of Various Omission Training Procedures As A Function Of Reinforcement History, Mary Patricia Brockman Nov 1976

The Effectiveness Of Various Omission Training Procedures As A Function Of Reinforcement History, Mary Patricia Brockman

Student Work

This experiment analyzed the relative effectiveness of three forms of omission training (OT 20 sec, OT 5 sec, and gradual OT with a time-dependent criterlor) in reducing a bar press response following three different reinforcement histories. Thirty-six children between the ages of 4% and 11 years were initially trained to press a bar according to a VR 35 schedule of reinforcement. The different omission training conditions were introduced directly following the VR 35 baseline, following a lengthened history of VR, and following a DRL intervention condition designed to enhance the effectiveness of the OT condition.

A mother was trained in a structured laboratory setting, through written and verbal instructions and daily verbal feedback, to modify specific components of her attention to her 4-yr-old daughter’s behavior during an instruct ion-following task. Examinations were made of the effectiveness of parent training in changing the mother’s behavior in the structured laboratory setting, as well as the extent of generalized change in mother’s responses in three other settings in which no training was conducted: 1) a similar structured period in the home, 2) a dissimilar unstructured period in the laboratory, and 3) a-dissimlar unstructured period in the home. Land Value Taxation: Impact Analysis On Omaha/Douglas County, Nebraska, Gary Carlson

Publications

The present property tax has been under attack by home owners, business and industry. Many studies have shown the present property tax to be the most unpopular tax levied by government. This tax once levied by all governments including the federal government is now almost exclusively used by local governments with other levels of government adopting sales and income taxes as replacements for the property tax. While other levels of governments have abandoned the property tax it currently seems that the local property tax will be used by local governments as their main revenue source for quite some time in …
