This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Omaha's Central Business District."

As Omaha is the dominant City of the metropolitan area, the Central Business District (CBD) is the focus of Omaha. Historically it has enjoyed this distinction by virtue of its location and by the fact it contains the area's concentration of government, office, finance, cultural, entertainment, and general commercial activities. As Omaha has undergone great change in recent years so has the Central Business District. This report summarizes the findings of a six month study which had as its primary purpose that of determining the impact of …

Situational Determinants Of A Crying Response: Their Interrelations With Cognitive Structure And Level Of Sex-Role Identification, Richard Paul Votta

Student Work

An attempt was made to assess the relationships between an individual's level of sex-role identification, degree of cognitive complexity or simplicity, and reported crying behavior. One hundred sixty six students from an introductory sociology class at the University of Nebraska at Omaha were administered three scales: the Bern Sex Role Inventory to assess their level of sex-role identification; the Millimet Rep Test (Version 1) to assess the degree of cognitive complexity, and the Votta Crying Scale-an instrument devised by the author to measure an individual's propensity to crying and the four major types of situations that will elicit the behavior. …

Developmental Aspects Of Nonverbal Communication, Richard Norris

Student Work

Developmental differences in encoding and decoding abilities were investigated in this study with subjects ranging from 5 years to 88 years of age. The 94 white, middle-class males and females were placed into five age groups. Subjects were asked to encode each of six emotional expressions, after which they were presented with three decoding tasks. The video tape mode required subjects to decode the same six common nonverbal expressions of emotion (i.e., anger, surprise, fear, happiness, sadness, disgust). A second decoding task consisted of four expressions (anger, fear, sadness, happiness) which were schematically depicted. Subjects' decoding of affect in a …

The Effects Of A Community Involvement Program On Adolescent Student's Citizenship Attitudes, Stuart Harold Stockhaus Jun 1976

The Effects Of A Community Involvement Program On Adolescent Student's Citizenship Attitudes, Stuart Harold Stockhaus

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Upon looking at any of the many lists of social studies instructional objectives. one can hardly avoid finding an objective called citizenship. A National Council for the Social Studies sponsored publication on civic education states, "In one sense, desirable citizenship traits in a democratic society remain the same today, in the midst of rapid cultural change. as they were hundreds of years ago. Effective participation by the individual in public affairs continues to require the same four essentials: knowledge. thought. commitment, and action. In application, however. each generation redefines good citizenship to fit demands of the times."

The Effect Of Patterned Visual Stimulation On Visual Activity And Feeding Behavior During The Feeding Period In Human Newborn Infants, Robert H. Anderson May 1976

The Effect Of Patterned Visual Stimulation On Visual Activity And Feeding Behavior During The Feeding Period In Human Newborn Infants, Robert H. Anderson

Student Work

The relationship between patterned visual stimulation and behavior in newborn human infants has been studied in a variety of situations (Fantz, 196 3; Hershenson, 1965; Haith, 1965; Bruner, 1968; Salapatek, 1968; Wagner, 1972; Friedman 1972; Boismier, 1972). Typically, the effect of visual stimulation on the behavior of newborn infants during the feeding period has not been studied. This omission may in part be related to studies by Haith (1965) and Bruner (1968) who, in the investigation of the effects of visual stimulation on nonnutritive.sucking rates, concluded that newborns are virtually incapable of looking and sucking at the same time. A Descriptive Study Of The Listening Skills Of Chief Probation Officers For The State Of Nebraska, Patricia A. Crosby

Student Work

Twenty years ago the place of listening in our educational system was neglected. Instruction in listening skills, even at the college level, was virtually nonexistent. Today, at all educational levels, training in listening is "coming of age." Listening is beginning to be recognized as an area of important communication skills. More important, it is being considered as fundamental skills which can and must be taught.

During the first half of the twentieth century in most American cities the journey between home and work tended to increase. This was especially true for white collar office workers and managers whose rising incomes permitted not only purchase of new homes in the suburbs but also purchase and operation of automobiles to ease the longer journey to work. In most cases this journey took them to the Central Business District (CBD) or financial center of the city. As these …
