Effects Of Coeducation On Occupational, Educational And Social Aspirations Of Adolescent Girls, Mary Ellen Lynch Aug 1975

Effects Of Coeducation On Occupational, Educational And Social Aspirations Of Adolescent Girls, Mary Ellen Lynch

Student Work

The sexual composition of the high school environment may have a significant effect on the educational and occupational aspirations of adolescent girls. Although the coeducational environment may provide adolescent girls with more opportunities for social encounters and development of social skills, it may not facilitate the maintenance of high educational and occupational aspirations among them.

On the other hand, the emphasis in the same-sex all-girl high school may be academic rather than social. These girls are subject to a minimal amount of feminine-role conflict because they are not in direct competition with males. Same-sex peer influence may place emphasis on …

In The World But Not Of The World: A Church's Relation To Its Environment, James Earl Floyd Aug 1975

In The World But Not Of The World: A Church's Relation To Its Environment, James Earl Floyd

Student Work

Research in general and inductive research in particular often begins from an unfocused curiosity. From this perplexity, emerges the problem of research, the collecting of relevant data, and the drawing of theoretical inferences from said data. The current research enterprise includes these major problems but is, in many respects, different. That is to say, the execution is different from that which is found in "traditional patterns of investigation."

Traits Attributed To Female Somatotypes, Edward C. Hill Aug 1975

Traits Attributed To Female Somatotypes, Edward C. Hill

Student Work

The subject of female somatotypes Is one which has been largely neglected. No studies to date have used the female somatotypes. This study of college students measured character traits attributed to the three different female somatotype silhouettes; endomorph, mesomorph, ectomorph. Sixty undergraduate students were asked to rate the three female somatotype silhouettes on a list of twentyfour bi-polar adjective scales. In only one case did males and females disagree significantly on what trait should be assigned to a particular body type. The subjects rated the three silhouettes differently on fourteen of the twenty-four adjectival scales. In most cases the male …

The Sanitary Improvement District As A Mechanism For Urban Development, Ralph H. Todd, Sherri Rogers, Kwame P. Annor, Murray Frost, David W. Hinton, Paul S. T. Lee, Armin K. Ludwig

Publications

The history of the Sanitary Improvement District (SID) in Nebraska is closely tied to the history of urban development in the Omaha Metropolitan Area. The end of World War II freed the pent-up demand for new dwelling units in Nebraska as well as in the rest of the nation. Omaha's stock of platted lots was rapidly used up in the late 40's and pressures were great for opening up new areas. To meet the demand, new dwellings began to spring up on the fringes of the City, but altogether too many of these were served only by wells and septic …

Decision-Making Style As A Factor In The Selection Of Task-Group Coordinator, David E. Morris Dec 1974

Decision-Making Style As A Factor In The Selection Of Task-Group Coordinator, David E. Morris

Student Work

To date, emergent leadership literature has not clearly indicated what variables influence group members' perception and subsequent selection of a group leader. One approach to the study of this problem has been to analyze group members' verbal behavior to identify empirically behaviors which are more frequent among leaders than nonleaders within a task group. The basic assumption underlying this approach appears to be that a group selects as its leader that individual from the group who most frequently exhibits some specific "leadership behavior(s)." The literature indicates, however, that this approach has been misleading and inconclusive. For example, in an early …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Net In-Commuter Patterns to the Douglas County Urban Core And to the Omaha CBD."

Introduction During the past several decades workers have increasingly tended to live outside the area in which they are employed. The work area may be the core urban county in a large metropolitan area or the Central Business District (CBD) of the central city, but in either case such moves have tended to extend the average distance of the journey to work. Such moves have also led to the transfer of money in the form of paychecks …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Attitudes Toward the Construction of an Urban Expressway: The North Omaha Case."

T he locating and construction of an urban expressway creates conflicts between the need for new and improved routes of access and the need to protect the environmental, social and economic characteristics of parts of the city itself. A new freeway in an urban area inevitably means there will be destruction of homes, disruption of neighborhoods and local patterns of movement, and changes in landscape, noise and traffic levels. Citizen groups often organize to protest these disruptions and changes …

Cognitive Differentiation And Information Processing, Monica Brien Aug 1974

Cognitive Differentiation And Information Processing, Monica Brien

Student Work

Thirty-eight subjects selected on the basis of extreme REP test scores participated in a task requiring them to make ratings of comfort when presented with hypothetical persons with differing personality attributes. Attribute sets were composed of five bipolar construct dimensions determined individually for each subject by extracting constructs that were mutually unrelated (differentiated) or mutually related (undifferentiated). Subjects rated each of 32 different attribute combinations. It .was expected that the mutually related construct dimensions ot the undifferentiated group would increase the likelihood of cue inconsistency and result in ratings formed on the basis of a nonadditive model of information processing …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Omaha-Council Bluffs Tax Border Issue."

Recently governmental administrators and politicians of Omaha have voiced concern over the sales losses that might result because of Iowa's exemption of food purchases from the retail sales tax--a measure which took effect July 1, 1974.1

Generally, it is felt that a sales tax rate differential between two border cities will influence sales as favorable rate differentials are reduced or unfavorable rate differentials are created or widened. However, the magnitude of the problem will depend on many factors, e.g., location of major shopping facilities, distance, …
