Internet Use And Training In University Libraries, Carol Tenopir, Ralf Neufang May 1995

Internet Use And Training In University Libraries, Carol Tenopir, Ralf Neufang

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

University research libraries in the United States and Canada were surveyed to determine their use of a variety of electronic reference tools. An 85% response rate provided us with information about university library use of CD-ROM, remote online, locally loaded databases, and Internet access. The biggest change since our 1991 survey of the same libraries was in their provision of Internet access to users through the library. Follow-up interviews provided more in-depth information on how university libraries are managing Internet access, staff and user training programs, and changes in library staff attitudes or user attitudes since Internet access was introduced. …

Reinvestment In Inner-City Historic Space: An Analysis Of Gentrification In Knoxville, Tennessee, Colin M. Riley May 1995

Reinvestment In Inner-City Historic Space: An Analysis Of Gentrification In Knoxville, Tennessee, Colin M. Riley

Masters Theses

Gentrification is the movement of middle-class households back to the inner-city neighborhoods that they abandoned during the 1950s and 1960s. Most American cities with populations that exceed 100,000 have within them areas that are experiencing reinvestment and housing market revival. At the same time, urban renewal programs that were popular in the 1950s and 1960s have lost their support as responses to inner-city decline. Private citizens play a leading role in promoting gentrification. The term "managed gentrification" is used to describe the activities of inner-city neighborhood organizations in Knoxville, Tennessee. The organizations work closely with city planners to create the …

A Dental Analysis Of The South Dakota Arikara Including A Comparative Analysis Of C. G. Turner's 1967 The Dentition Of Arctic Peoples, Michele Grant

Masters Theses

A metric and non-metric dental trait analysis was performed on the South Dakota Arikara population housed at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Fifty-one male, female, and sex indeterminable individual skeletons from the Larson, Leavenworth, Mobridge, and Sully excavations were examined for standard metric and non-metric dental traits. These data were subjected to standard chi-square analyses in order to test for statistically significant sexual dimorphism. Significant sexual dimorphism was found on the basis of many of the metric dental traits. Several non-metric dental traits also exhibited significant sexual dimorphism. This analysis was then compared to C.G. Turner's Arctic populations data and …

Hot Topic: Charters Change For Three Types Of General Law Cities: Mayor-Aldermanic, Uniform City Manager-Commission And Modified City Manager-Council, Mtas

MTAS Publications: Hot Topics

Effective immediately upon its signing Mar. 17 [1995] by Gov. Sundquist, a new law made two significant changes in the uniform city manager-commission charter.

1. The first change reduced the number of required readings of an ordinance from three to two.

2. The second change deleted the provision that all powers enumerated under the charter had to be performed by ordinance.

The rest of the charter changes made by this new law were predominately housekeeping.

The Use Of Three Dimensional Laser Imaging For Facial Reconstruction, Susannah M. Addyman Dec 1994

The Use Of Three Dimensional Laser Imaging For Facial Reconstruction, Susannah M. Addyman

Masters Theses

This thesis outlines the examination and test of a method developed by the University College, London, Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering for facial reconstruction using the latest technology in three dimensional laser imaging. The University College technique involves a skull on a rotating platform as the focal point of a laser beam fanned out into a straight line. A video camera placed obliquely to the skull records the distortions in the laser beam created by the surface contours. These distortions are recorded from two directions through the use of four surface-silvered mirrors which allows for the triangulation of all …

True Volunteers: Women's Intercollegiate Athletics At The University Of Tennessee, 1903 To 1976, Eric John Kloiber

Masters Theses

This study outlines the history of women's intercollegiate athletics at the University of Tennessee from its founding in 1903 until the creation of the Women's Athletics Department in 1976. This period was chosen for study due to the absence of athletic scholarships and lack of complete records. Through newspaper research, archival research, and interviews, an attempt has been made to reconstruct, insofar as is practicable, the course of events followed by women's intercollegiate athletics at Tennessee during the period. This study aims to serve as a reference work on the history of women's athletics at Tennessee during the period.

Some Aspects Of Affect Measurement On Rorschach's Test And The Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire, Greta L. Hunter Aug 1994

Some Aspects Of Affect Measurement On Rorschach's Test And The Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire, Greta L. Hunter

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate some of the ways in which the relationship between two types of measures that assess positive and negative expectations about the world might be improved. The first measure, an index in the Burstein-Loucks comprehensive scoring system (1989) for Rorschach's test, was based on object relations theory. The second measure consisted of two higher-order factors of the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (Tellegen, 1982), an empirically-derived instrument. Revision of the Burstein-Loucks index did not further improve the magnitude of the relationship between the two measures, although it may have slightly changed the nature of that …

Bones Of The Knee Joint And Individual Features That Can Be Used For Forensic Identification, Emily Anne Craig Aug 1994

Bones Of The Knee Joint And Individual Features That Can Be Used For Forensic Identification, Emily Anne Craig

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation describes the normal osteology of the bones of the knee joint in correlation to the surrounding soft tissues. Traumatic and surgical modifications of the normal osteological features are also discussed in reference to their significance for anthropological analysis as well as for forensic identification. As a primary focus, a new method of racial determination from the distal femur is described in detail.

This new method involves the measurement of the intercondylar shelf in relation to the posterior shaft of the femur. The intercondylar shelf is a feature of the distal femur that shows significant difference between American Whites …

Sexual Dimorphism In Modern Black And White Cranial Vault Thickness: A Forensic Application For Sexual Discrimination, Butler Fuller Iv Aug 1994

Sexual Dimorphism In Modern Black And White Cranial Vault Thickness: A Forensic Application For Sexual Discrimination, Butler Fuller Iv

Masters Theses

In forensic anthropology, the emphasis in research lies within the continual pursuit of the best methods for human identification through analysis of the skeletal remains available. Most of the methods developed by researchers both past and present have utilized the various skeletal collections curated at museums and universities throughout the country in order to try and deduce patterns and trends visible in the osseus record of human existence. Here, 126 specimens from the University of Tennessee (U.T.) William M. Bass Collection (n=31) and Terry Collections (n=95) are analyzed, to determine the level of sexual dimorphism present in the thickness of …

Diet In The Urban Environment: A Trace Element Analysis Of A Nineteenth-Century Cadaver Sample From The Cluskey Building, Medical College Of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia, Paul Christopher Dillingham

Masters Theses

In 1989 human skeletal remains were excavated from three basement rooms of the Cluskey Building, the main medical building of the Medical College of Georgia from 1835-1912. These remains evidently had been discarded there following dissection. The only way a medical student could learn anatomy was to dissect cadavers; unfortunately, dissection was illegal in Georgia until 1887. Therefore, the cadavers had to be obtained by robbing local cemeteries or obtained by request for cadavers robbed from cemeteries in cities such as Savannah, New York, and Baltimore.

A trace-element analysis was undertaken in an attempt to reconstruct the diet of these …
