The Cervical Spine: Race And Sex Differences, Gwendolyn M. Haugen
The Cervical Spine: Race And Sex Differences, Gwendolyn M. Haugen
Masters Theses
This study examines the possible correlation of cervical vertebrae (C2-C7) gross morphological and metric variation with race and sex. Developmental and normal anatomy of the cervical vertebrae are investigated to pinpoint any functional reason associated with this variability. The 174 individuals comprising the pooled data set consisted of black and white males and females from the William M. Bass Collection and the Terry Anatomical Collection. Five measurements and one spinous process type classification were collected on each cervical vertebra (C2-C7). A series of multivariate and discriminant statistical tests were performed on the measurement data to determine whether significant variation exists …

Public Works Standards & Specifications, Edward C. Archer
MTAS Publications: Full Publications
The goal and intention of this publication is for cities to have guidelines of some of the standards and specifications on construction projects. Readers should be careful in their adoption and use as these guidelines are not all-inclusive of the standards and specifications which may be necessary in a specific local community situation. It is recommended that all public works projects be developed, designed and constructed under the direction of a registered professional engineer.

Unaided Factors Predicting Client-Assessed Hearing Aid Performance, Usage And Satisfaction, Hilary J. Crowley
Unaided Factors Predicting Client-Assessed Hearing Aid Performance, Usage And Satisfaction, Hilary J. Crowley
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if client-assessed hearing aid performance, usage, and satisfaction ratings could be predicted before hearing aids are purchased. Aided performance was represented by the Profile of Hearing Aid Performance, (PHAP, Cox and Gilmore, 1990), subscales. Based upon data from 46 subjects, multiple regression was applied to 16 unaided variables to determine if they could be used to predict the response variables of performance, usage and satisfaction. The 16 unaided variables included pure tone average, slope of hearing loss, the Speech Perception in Noise (SPIN) test (Kalikow, Stevens & Elliott, 1977), dynamic range, comfortable …
Psychological Adjustment And Family Experiences Of Children In Foster Care Placed With Or Apart From Siblings, Susan M. Flynn
Psychological Adjustment And Family Experiences Of Children In Foster Care Placed With Or Apart From Siblings, Susan M. Flynn
Doctoral Dissertations
It was hypothesized that foster children placed with a sibling would show better psychological adjustment and more embeddedness in the foster family than those foster children without such contacts. Subjects were 41 foster children between the ages of 6 and 12 years. Cognitive maturity, problem behaviors, psychological maturity, dependency, wariness, curiosity, and attention seeking were aspects of psychological adjustment. These were measured on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised, Child Behavior Checklist, Tasks of Emotional Development Test, Marble-in-the-Hole Game, and Picture Game. Embeddedness in the foster family was measured with a family sculpting technique. Family Boundary Ambiguity was measured with a …
Relationship Patterns Among Men And Women From Stepfather Families, Susan Montgomery Brinn
Relationship Patterns Among Men And Women From Stepfather Families, Susan Montgomery Brinn
Doctoral Dissertations
This research examined differences in relationship patterns between men and women in stepfamilies and men and women in biological families. Previous studies have generally reported more distant relationships with parents for respondents in stepfamilies. Findings on relationships outside the home have been contradictory; some research observed no effect on peer relationships for subjects from stepfamilies, still others reported more difficulty in relationships and greater risk for delinquency among this population. In order to measure relationship differences, three psychometric scales and the social network list were administered to 215 college students (63 stepchildren and 152 biological children). Results indicated that stepsons …

Dialog And Mead Join The Relevance Ranks, Carol Tenopir, Pam Cahn
Dialog And Mead Join The Relevance Ranks, Carol Tenopir, Pam Cahn
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
New, non-Boolean, natural language search techniques - Westlaw's WIN, DIALOG's TARGET, and Mead Data Central's FREESTYLE - are based on the assumption that the standard command-driven online systems coupled with Boolean logic searching are not only difficult to learn, but may sometimes miss relevant documents. Although each new product works somewhat differently, all 3 offer an alternative to searching with command interfaces and Boolean/proximity operators. They offer natural language input, with no need for commands or logical operators. This input method is coupled with so-called associative or statistical retrieval techniques that provide relevance ranking of search results. The question of …
Evolutionary Perspectives For The Analysis Of Prehistoric Lithic Artifacts: An Example From The Western Highland Rim Of Tennessee, Andrew P. Bradbury
Evolutionary Perspectives For The Analysis Of Prehistoric Lithic Artifacts: An Example From The Western Highland Rim Of Tennessee, Andrew P. Bradbury
Masters Theses
The goal of this thesis is to develop an evolutionary framework for the analysis of prehistoric lithic artifacts. The principles of evolutionary theory are presented and then extended to the lithic artifact analysis. Methods are developed based on the theoretical framework. Lithic artifacts recovered from two Terminal Archaic Wells Creek phase sites in Houston County, Tennessee are used as a case study to demonstrate the utility of such an approach. Variability can be demonstrated with respect to morphology, technology, and function of lithic implements. Elements that may represent attributes under selective pressure are examined.
The lithic material recovered from the …
A Comparison Of Amplification Efficacy And Toleration Of Background Noise In Hearing Impaired Elderly Persons, Susan Ruth Lytle
A Comparison Of Amplification Efficacy And Toleration Of Background Noise In Hearing Impaired Elderly Persons, Susan Ruth Lytle
Masters Theses
Toleration of background noise and amplification efficacy were compared in hearing impaired older persons. Twenty subjects were divided into two matched groups that differed only in their ability to successfully utilize amplification. The successful group utilized their hearing aids full time while the unsuccessful group rarely or never used their hearing aids. The ability to tolerate background noise was assessed by having the subjects select the loudest tolerable level for speech spectrum and speech babble noise while listening to a story. All testing was administered via audible field monaurally with and without the use of the subject's own hearing aid. …

A Survey Of Interracial Interaction At The University Of Tennessee, Knoxville: An Anthropological Analysis, Lillian Marie Wallace
A Survey Of Interracial Interaction At The University Of Tennessee, Knoxville: An Anthropological Analysis, Lillian Marie Wallace
Masters Theses
This study was designed to explore the social interaction of Black and White students at the University of Tennessee and how this interaction impacted Black students' college experience. Most of the pedagogical literature offers a psychosocial explanation of Black students' failure to fully integrate on White college campuses. Early educational anthropology literature presents a cultural difference explanation at the micro level. Present educational anthropology literature offers a more complete explanation of variability in minority school performance through a multi-deterministic approach utilizing race, class, and gender. This study moves beyond classroom performance. It attempts to discover inductively how Black and White …

Full-Text Retrieval: Systems And Files, Carol Tenopir
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
Much of the development in the first 30 years of library automation has been in solving the problem of identifying relevant sources. Automation of the library's card catalog provides a finding tool for the library's collections. The books, journals, films, and other materials located through the catalog still mostly reside in their original form, with no direct connection to the automated finding tool.
Most of the early development in electronic publishing was also aimed solely at identifying information sources. Secondary publishers, notably publishers of indexing/abstracting serials, were the first to provide their resources in electronic form. Throughout the 1970s and …
