The focus in this dissertation was on the interrelationships among parenting beliefs, parenting stress, and parent-child interaction. It was hypothesized that mothers' addiction status moderated these interrelationships when controlling for the effects of income, levels of education, race, age, number of children, and child's prematurity status.

Data from a program evaluation of a residential addiction treatment program and comparison data from five day care centers were collected from August 1991 to August 1993 using the Adult-Adolescent Parenting Inventory, the Parenting Stress Index, and the Parent-Child Interaction Form. This study uses the 1980 National Natality Study to examine the relative importance of sociodemographic factors, medical-risk factors, and prenatal care in predicting birth weight. Findings indicate that both sociodemographic and medical-risk factors are important in predicting birth weight, with medical risks accounting for slightly more variance (after accounting for social variables) in birth weight. Although prenatal care accounts for only 1 percent of the variance, a statistical interaction between prenatal care and labor complications accounts for an additional 1 percent.

White-Tailed Deer Crown Height Measurements And Mortality Profiles From The Hayes Site, Middle Tennessee, Renee Beauchamp

Previous research at the Hays Site (40ML139) prompted an investigation of white-tailed deer remains from the site. An evaluation of aging techniques revealed that the dental crown height measurement technique is the best method for aging white-tailed deer. A regression formula was developed with a known-age sample of Mississippi white-tailed deer. An investigation of mortality profile interpretations defines attritional, living structure, and prime-dominated mortality profiles. The mortality profile interpretations are used to define seasonality and hunting intensity for the white-tailed deer from the Hayes site. A modified iterated age length key is used to derive mortality profiles. Results for hunting …

This study examines the effects of changing subsistence strategies on the degree of sexual dimorphism for prehistoric skeletal populations from the Southeastern United States. Changes in subsistence from hunting and gathering in the Archaic Period to intensive agriculture in the Mississippian Period caused increased levels of stress that affected growth and development, as well as incidence of disease. Eight long bone measurements were taken from 17 skeletal series (6 Middle/Late Archaic, 8 Early/Middle Woodland, and 3 Late Mississippian) from Tennessee and Alabama. In her 1922 Master's thesis, Sue Remaley uncovered a neighborhood type in Knoxville, Tennessee that contrasts with prevailing perceptions of urban poverty. The urban poor are often described as having high numbers of female headed families, high crime and unemployment rates, and are often portrayed as black or Hispanic. Remaley discovered that many poor neighborhoods in Knoxville are composed of two-parent families, have high employment rates, live in homes they own, and are predominantly white.

The largest online vendors of full-text sources to general libraries, DIALOG, Data-Star and NEXIS, are described and compared. DIALOG offers the largest number of full-text sources and the best set-building search techniques, but does not offer automatic searching of inconsistent text such as plurals or spelling equivalencies as do the others. Data-Star has the strongest European focus and information on chemistry, pharmacy and medicine. NEXIS has the most user-friendly search language and superior display features and the greatest number of unique titles.

Archaeologists have identified patterns in the archaeological record of plantation sites which they attribute to the status differences of the plantation inhabitants; however, most of these investigations have been restricted to the coastal areas of the deep South. Recent excavations at plantations in Tennessee have provided the opportunity to compare this coastal subsistence pattern with data from two plantations in the Upland South. This thesis compared eight faunal assemblages from four plantations, two coastal and two inland contexts, in order to investigate whether inland plantations exhibit the same patterns which have been identified on coastal plantations. Actualistic studies of bone can contribute to an understanding of cultural modification of archaeologically recovered bone. Two such cultural modifications include cooking and subsequent fracturing during food preparation. In an effort to understand the fracture dynamics and patterns of cooked bone, a three part study is undertaken including fresh, boiled, and roasted bone. This study incorporates mechanical stress testing of bone, hand-fracturing with study of macroscopic fracture details, and examination of surface morphology using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).

The ability to determine sex and race from skeletal remains is a fundamental feature of any skeletal analysis, including population studies and personal identification. Typically, sex and race is estimated from the cranium (Giles and Elliot 1962, 1963) and recently from the base of the cranium (Holland 1986). This study investigates the application of seven craniometric measurements from the base of the skull for the identification of sexual and ethnic groups.

This research attempts to determine if there are any differences in the amount of time captive Callithrix jacchus, Saguinus fuscicollis use various substrates. Following a literature review, the primary hypothesis posited is there may be a possible correlation between time spent on substrate and feeding patterns. Recorded observations at the Marmoset Research Center-University of Tennessee Medical Center will be analyzed with a nonparametric statistical test in order to test this hypothesis.

Users of online databases frequently have several options available for searching the same database. Selection of the appropriate access method can be simplified through the evaluation of seven criteria. Price, time periods covered, and frequency and timing of updates should be considered first. Variations in file structure among online systems should also be evaluated. Finally, the online systems themselves should be evaluated for their support systems and search features.

The Effect Of The Gorbachev Era (1985-1991) On Newsweek's Photo Coverage And Image Of The Soviet Union, Ruth Winchester Ware

This study examined 729 photos and cutlines published in NEWSWEEK's International Section that depicted events that occurred in the Soviet Union during the Gorbachev Era (1985-1991). The period saw change in Soviet domestic affairs (especially glasnost) and foreign relations (especially New Political Thinking or NPT) that cumulatively led to the end of the Cold War. NEWSWEEK coverage of the Gorbachev Era was compared to NEWSWEEK coverage of the Chernenko interlude (February 1984-February 1985) in order to have a base line for comparison.

NEWSWEEK increased its coverage of the Soviet Union during the Gorbachev Era. There were more editions, photos, …
