Electronic Reference Options: How They Stack Up In Research Libraries, Carol Tenopir, Ralf Neufang

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

Electronic reference in a variety of forms is becoming a reality in libraries today. Whether it is online, CD-ROM, or databases loaded from magnetic tapes or a combination of several options, patrons have access to more electronic resources than ever before. We recently surveyed research libraries in the U.S. and Canada to see which electronic reference options they offer. ARL libraries may not be typical because they tend to be heavy users of technology and have relatively large budgets, but they can be considered trendsetters. What these libraries are offering now will be found in all types of libraries within …

Elements Of A Utility Rate Study, Sharon Rollins Feb 1992

Elements Of A Utility Rate Study, Sharon Rollins

MTAS Publications: Full Publications

How can communities protect their multi-billion dollar water and wastewater treatment investments and give citizens clean, safe water? The key lies with municipal officials' ability to acquire sufficient operating revenues.

Sound financial management allows communities to acquire the necessary revenues to maintain financially self-sufficient water and wastewater operations. The best source of revenue for paying water and wastewater treatment costs is user fees. Unfortunately, raising user fees is one of the most dreaded actions undertaken by local officials. If it is not done correctly, the resulting political backlash and public resistance can be harmful for water and wastewater operations.

The Saurian Psyche Revisted: Lizards In Research, Neil Greenberg Jan 1992

The Saurian Psyche Revisted: Lizards In Research, Neil Greenberg

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

This essay is intended to guide researchers interested in lizards as prospective experimental models to identify an appropriate species for their research needs and to care for lizards in a manner that will not compromise their utility. Coupled with these is a concern for critical thinking about the ethical dimension of lizard research, one guide for which is to consider the intersection of human needs and lizard needs.

Before proceeding further, several arbitrary premises must be made clear:

1. While wholly deserving of study because of their intrinsic interest, I will assume that the lizard research to be undertaken is …

Team Member Implicit Theories Of Team Development: Relationships With Team Member Behavior, Team Viability And Team Performance, Marilyn Ann Perkins Dec 1991

Team Member Implicit Theories Of Team Development: Relationships With Team Member Behavior, Team Viability And Team Performance, Marilyn Ann Perkins

Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined the relationship of team effectiveness and members' implicit theories of team development. Implicit theories are individuals' preconceptions of the relative importance of team development variables associated with team effectiveness. Team development variables assessed in this study were communication, cohesion, norms, role clarity, conflict, and participation.

The first hypothesis predicted a direct relationship between implicit theories of team development and behavior. Hypothesis one also predicted this relationship would be enhanced by convergence of individual implicit theories with remaining team members' implicit theories. It was also hypothesized that there is a positive relationship between convergence of implicit theories among …

The Evolution Of Financial Practices And Financial Structures Among American Manufacturers, 1875-1905: Case Studies Of The Sugar Refining And Meat Packing Industries, William Michael Doyle Dec 1991

The Evolution Of Financial Practices And Financial Structures Among American Manufacturers, 1875-1905: Case Studies Of The Sugar Refining And Meat Packing Industries, William Michael Doyle

Doctoral Dissertations

Two salient features of late nineteenth century American economic development were the appearance of a multitude of large, horizontally or vertically integrated manufacturing corporations, and the emergence of a sophisticated market for industrial securities. According to most economist and economic historians, both of these developments can be attributed primarily to increased deficit financing requirements among late nineteenth century American manufacturers. This was presumed to have resulted largely from technological innovations in manufacturing that increased both total capital requirements and the minimum size of the required initial investment in many industries. These developments were thought to have necessitated the creation and …

Authorities On Ourselves: Being Lesbian In Heterosexist Culture -- Can Personal Meaning Inform Social Work Practice?, Sue Cover Wright

Doctoral Dissertations

This study was designed to explore the social reality of lesbian women. Its theoretical base lies in the social constructionist theory that the social context interacts with personal experience to create social meaning. Professional social science literature presents a confused account of lesbianism. Clinical studies have diagnosed and labeled lesbianism as a disease, a dysfunctional personality disorder, or poor social adjustment. Recent studies viewed them as an oppressed minority group. Few studies have gone to the source and asked the women to define themselves -- what it is like to be lesbian in our culture; what their experience means to …

Organization Of Technology And Lithic Analysis: Prehistoric Occupation Of The Hayes Site (40ml139), Philip J. Carr

Masters Theses

The Hayes Site (40ML139) is located in the central Duck River Basin of Middle Tennessee. Excavations at the site revealed Middle Archaic, late Middle Archaic, and Late Archaic components. An examination of the lithic assemblage from the Hayes Site aids in assessing and building models of hunter-gatherer organization for the central Duck River Basin. An organizational perspective on technology, results from published flintknapping experiments, and a lithic resource survey provide the means of constructing and employing an interpretive framework for understanding prehistoric occupation of the Hayes Site. It was found that materials from the Middle Archaic components represent forager residences …

Quantitative Effects Of Skeletonizing Processes On Bone Density, Rex Mcdonald Aug 1991

Quantitative Effects Of Skeletonizing Processes On Bone Density, Rex Mcdonald

Masters Theses

(From the Conclusion)

This study has focused on the alterations of bone when processed in aqueous solution. The author finds the process of immersing bone in aqueous as an unacceptable manner to process osseous materials. When bone is processed by insects, within a sheltered environment, the loss of inorganic material is almost non-existent. This study has shown that the use of water in almost every case, has caused an alteration in the baseline of the Bone Mineral Content.
