Cranial Allometry And The Evolution Of The Domestic Dog, Darcy F. Morey Aug 1990

Cranial Allometry And The Evolution Of The Domestic Dog, Darcy F. Morey

Doctoral Dissertations

Domestication is usually defined as a process involving human subjugation of other animal or plant species. From this perspective, it is often presumed that morphological changes in domestic animals are the product of conscious or unconscious human selection. A broader evolutionary perspective does not make this presumption.

The origin of the domestic dog (Canis familiaris) is best understood as a consequence of human adoption of wolf pups (Canis lupus) some 12,000 years ago. Young wolf pups growing up in human society formed their primary social bonds with humans. The radically altered circumstances experienced by these early …

Changes In Stature And Health Status As Related To The Emergence Of Diabetes Among Eastern Cherokee Indians In North Carolina, Deann Lee Stivers Aug 1990

Changes In Stature And Health Status As Related To The Emergence Of Diabetes Among Eastern Cherokee Indians In North Carolina, Deann Lee Stivers

Doctoral Dissertations

Health conditions such as the presence of infectious and acute diseases, substandard living conditions, and nutritional status may influence the attainment of adult stature among Eastern Cherokees living in the western North Carolina mountains in the late Nineteenth Century. Stature measurements and genealogical information were collected in 1892 by Fred Starr under the direction of Franz Boas. Living descendants of individuals measured in 1892 were identified. This sample was measured and interviewed. These data sets were used to access the attainment of height among adolescents and adults.

Historical photos taken by Mooney (circa 1880) provided visual image of fat patterning …

Non-Insulin Dependent (Type Ii Diabetes) In The Eastern Cherokee, Patricia Ann Quiggins Aug 1990

Non-Insulin Dependent (Type Ii Diabetes) In The Eastern Cherokee, Patricia Ann Quiggins

Doctoral Dissertations

Type II (Non-insulin dependent) diabetes is a serious problem for the Eastern Cherokee affecting 8% of the total population and 25% of the population over the age of 35 years. However, there have been no published epidemiological data on diabetes among the Eastern Cherokee since 1965. This study describes the current (1988) epidemiology of diabetes in the Eastern Cherokee population calculated from Indian Health Service Data, compares these rates to the U.S. general population, and examines demographic, cultural, and social factors that affect distribution of diabetes among the Cherokee.

Diabetes was determined to be most common in individuals ages forty-five …

Neandertal Craniofacial Growth: An Ontogenetic Model, Michael David Green Aug 1990

Neandertal Craniofacial Growth: An Ontogenetic Model, Michael David Green

Masters Theses

This research seeks to develop a model, using modern fetal crania, of Neandertal craniofacial growth. An argument is made that the developmental approach offers greater insight into Neandertal adaptive morphology than the standard functional models. Discussion of the relation between allometry and heterochrony is followed by a general genetic overview and a description of modern fetal craniofacial growth. These patterns are then extrapolated to the Neandertal condition.

Samples for this work consist of modern fetal crania, three modern adult samples, one sample of early modern humans and a sample of Neandertal adults. Principle components analysis was utilized, as was least …

General Periodical Indexes On Cd-Rom., Carol Tenopir, Timothy Smith

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

Because general periodical indexes are an important way of providing access to the library collection and are used heavily, they are a natural product for CD-ROM. Products from 4 major companies - EBSCO Electronic Information, H. W. Wilson Co., University Microfilms International (UMI), and Information Access Co. - are compared. All of the products examined feature extensive help screens, all follow the standard convention of displaying the most recent citation first, and all use the Esc key to move up through the menu hierarchy. H. W. Wilson's Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature and Readers' Guide Abstracts allow patrons access to …

The problems exist with what constitutes an administrative exemption.

Article Delivery Solutions, Carol Tenopir Jun 1990

Article Delivery Solutions, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article discusses solutions to the problems of libraries that offer online or CD-ROM searching of bibliographic databases. One perennial problem facing libraries that offer online or CD-ROM searching of bibliographic databases is helping patrons get copies of the documents they identify in a search. Although the problem exists even with printed indexes, database searching makes it easier to locate more items in a wider variety of sources. Patrons with long printouts of articles in sometimes obscure journals are common in libraries, especially as libraries provide CD-ROM indexes for self-service searching. Some libraries report an increase in the use of …

Metacarpal Entheses Changes As Evidence Of Labor Differences In Non-Agricultural And Agricultural American Indian Skeletons, Catherine M. Goldsmith May 1990

Metacarpal Entheses Changes As Evidence Of Labor Differences In Non-Agricultural And Agricultural American Indian Skeletons, Catherine M. Goldsmith

Doctoral Dissertations

This investigation is to find differences in labor costs imprinted on skeletons of non-agricultural and agricultural subsistence groups in America. Eight entheses developments of muscles on metacarpals were measured comparing samples taken from Archaic Tennessee and Kentucky hands with those from Tennessee and South Dakota agricultural populations.

The two subsistence groups show agricultural hands have larger entheses for seven of the eight insertions. Cross-sectional dimensions of the sampled metacarpals show shape changes between the two groups. These are interpreted as reflecting changes in work loads on the hand, with heavier, more frequent, and larger loads being manipulated by the later, …

Estimation Of Stature From Metacarpal Lengths, Lee Meadows May 1990

Estimation Of Stature From Metacarpal Lengths, Lee Meadows

Masters Theses

Stature reconstruction is an important feature of any skeletal analysis including population studies, early hominid research, and personal identification. In 1978, Musgrave and Harneja provided formulae for the estimation of stature using metacarpal lengths. The sample in that study included white males and females, predominantly of British origin who had an injured hand presented for radiography. The study did not include both hands from the same individual, only the injured hand. In facing a human identification case involving only a partial hand, these formulae were applied. A test of Musgrave and Harneja (1978) stature formulae was conducted on known skeletons …

The report presents recommendations for possible fleet management improvements based on the data collected and interviews conducted with operating personnel and local elected officials.

The Acquisition Of Medicinal Plant Knowledge: A Cross-Cultural Survey, Anna Ruth Dixon May 1990

The Acquisition Of Medicinal Plant Knowledge: A Cross-Cultural Survey, Anna Ruth Dixon

Masters Theses

Purpose of Study: A 10% random sample of fertility-related plants was taken from Table III of Farnsworth et al.'s article, "Potential Value of Plants as Sources of New Antifertility Agents I" (Farnsworth et al. 1975: 547-554), one of the most extensive compilations of cross-cultural and chemical information on fertility-related plants available in the literature. A single class of medicinal plants, fertility-related medicinals, was chosen because it is possible that the attributes that lead to the identification of fertility-related plants are different than for plants used to treat other conditions. Five objective criteria related to plant morphology, chemistry …

Prehistoric Subsistence Patterns On The North Carolina Coast: Nutritional Status As Measured By Cortical Bone Area, David C. Jones May 1990

Prehistoric Subsistence Patterns On The North Carolina Coast: Nutritional Status As Measured By Cortical Bone Area, David C. Jones

Masters Theses

Measurements of percent cortical bone area in femoral sections recovered from two geographically distinct areas of North Carolina are presented. The femora were recovered from archaeological sites 1) on the North Carolina coast and 2) in the North Carolina Piedmont. Both groups represent the Late Woodland. The Piedmont group relied on hunting-gathering, supplemented with insipient agriculture. The coastal group relied primarily (almost exclusively) on estuarine resources as a subsistence base. The mean percent cortical area was significantly higher in the coastal group, suggesting a better dietary adaptation. Additionally, anteroposterior and mediolateral diameters of the femoral sections were taken in order …

Value-Added Searching, Carol Tenopir Apr 1990

Value-Added Searching, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article discusses the importance of adding value to information products and services for library database searching. It describes something added by human intellectual effort to the basic bibliographic or textual information found in the records. Database searchers can use the value-added information to refine or improve their search. A type of value that is added to database searching is editing and analyzing what the searchers do with the search results before presenting it to the user. The positive points are obvious for professional searchers, but value-added information present trade-offs to the database producer and to the searcher. Most of …

Technical Bulletins: Fire (And Police) Departments Liable For Negligent Response, Sid Hemsley Jan 1990

Technical Bulletins: Fire (And Police) Departments Liable For Negligent Response, Sid Hemsley

MTAS Publications: Technical Bulletins

Under the Tennessee Tort Liability Act municipalities are liable for the negligence of their employees, with some exceptions. One of those exceptions is "discretionary functions" (Tennessee Code Annotated (TCA) 29-20-205). However, the act does not define that term. The Tennessee Supreme Court recently grappled with both a definition and application of the term in Gordon, et al. v. City of Henderson, 766 S.W.2d 784 (1988). Although that case involved the delivery of municipal fire services, it contains some language that should cause Tennessee municipalities to look closely at the way they deliver all public safety services.

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Creativity In Person Centered Expressive Therapy, Mukti Khanna Dec 1989

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Creativity In Person Centered Expressive Therapy, Mukti Khanna

Doctoral Dissertations

The field of creative or expressive arts therapies seeks to harness the power for'creative expression to the process of psychotherapy. Although expressive arts therapies are increasingly being used with a variety of populations, including the elderly, the disabled, intergenerational, and cross-cultural groups, a comprehensive theory of expressive arts therapies has yet to emerge. In addition, there is a paucity of research of what works in such therapies. A comprehensive theory of expressive arts therapies, however, can only emerge from the expressive arts themselves, reflecting the uniqueness of the creative process that is at their foundation. Qualitative research focusing on the …

"What Injures Royalty" Surnames, Inbreeding, And Genetic Structure In Sevier County, Tennessee: 1856-1905, Joseph C. Lewelling Dec 1989

"What Injures Royalty" Surnames, Inbreeding, And Genetic Structure In Sevier County, Tennessee: 1856-1905, Joseph C. Lewelling

Masters Theses

Inbreeding in Southern Appalachia has been a topic of discourse for both local color writers and academicians since the late 19th century, but only a few researchers have aspired to measure inbreeding or describe the genetic structure of Appalachian populations. This study attempts to assess the genetic structure in one small section of Appalachia--Sevier County, Tennessee.

Because surnames, like alleles, are inherited from a parent, their distribution on a population can give clues about the genetic structure of that population--including the degree of inbreeding. Census and marriage records from 1856-1905 were examined using several methods of surname analysis, and estimates …
