Ideas For A Better City, University Of Tennessee. Municipal Technical Advisory Service

MTAS History

MTAS receives virtually all periodicals in the field of municipal government and also obtains many other publications in this field. In the aggregate these contain a "mass of information" (when trying to sift, classify and assimilate, we sometimes wish it were much less in quantity!). These materials are routed to staff members for their examination; in this process they mark any items that appear to be noteworthy, and Mrs. Bush writes the summaries for this publication.

These items are not necessarily "new" ideas, for the term "new" assumes a relative meaning. There is little, if anything, in the field that …

Land Reform In China (1911-1953), Chen-Hung Keong

Masters Theses

[From Chapter I]

The significance of the Chinese land reform consists in the elimination of the landlord-gentry class and redistribution of land among the peasantry. It is, therefore, necessary to evaluate the following matters, before discussing land reform itself.

1. Since Confucianism has dominated the Chinese minds for about two thousand years, it will be useful to examine its impact on both the landlord-gentry class and the peasantry.

2. In the Chinese history, the landlord-gentry class constantly played an important and active role in social, economic and political affairs. A study of its origin, development, and structure will …

Manipulation Of The Magnitude Of Incentive Variable And Runway Performance, David Mason Wildasin Aug 1965

Manipulation Of The Magnitude Of Incentive Variable And Runway Performance, David Mason Wildasin

Masters Theses

The purpose of the present study was an attempt to replicate the findings of Wolfe and Kaplon (1941) using rats and somewhat more precise measurements of the dependent variables. Both the former study and Dyal's work indicate that specification of the amount of reward in terms of the weight of the food is insufficient. Specifically, the effect of presenting the same amount of food in one unit as against presenting it in five units was investigated.

  3. Children referred by schools will terminate service earlier in the clinic process than those referred by other sources.
  4. Proportionately, more children from one-parent families will be referred by other sources than by schools.
  5. There will be more referrals of children who are the oldest child in the family …

Some Factors In The Establishment Of Autocracy In Ghana, Peter Martin Stephenson Dec 1963

Some Factors In The Establishment Of Autocracy In Ghana, Peter Martin Stephenson

Masters Theses

In October, 1961, the Ghanaian legislature enacted two laws which received considerable attention from the world press. One made illegal any statement which could be taken as criticism of the President. This was to apply even in the legislature, so that it would be extremely difficult for any anti-Nkrumah forces there to operate effectively. The other law empowered the President to appoint special courts to deal with crimes against the state. This might not have been especially noteworthy except that they were clearly set up so that they could easily be used to bring about the execution of persons who …
