Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

This special issue in Teaching and Supervision in Counseling offers several perspectives of teaching, pedagogy, and learning theory in counselor education. In this article, the author conceptualizes signature pedagogies: surface, deep, and implicit structures in terms of research questions. Methodological design considerations are discussed to broaden the scope and rigor of research on teaching in counseling. Finally, strategies for improving a favorable review of research manuscripts for publication are provided.

In response to Baltrinic and Wachter Morris (2020), this article includes a history of teaching preparation in counselor education, exploration regarding current status of doctoral-level teaching preparation in counselor education, and review of literature regarding strategies for preparing doctoral students to teach. Supervision and mentorship emerged as key themes in this relatively new area of preparation. The author explores whether current practice is sufficient to identify these processes as signature pedagogies.

In a response to Baltrinic and Wachter Morris (2020), I expand on the term signature pedagogy and illustrate how clinical supervision satisfies the criteria for this designation in the counseling field. I then suggest an alternative term, “pedagogical foundations” (from Baltrinic and Wachter Morris), to ground work towards the authors’ goals of asking the ‘right questions’ about the ‘best things’ underlying counselor education practices and research. Finally, I outline some additional avenues (toward the same goals) via explorations of traditional learning theories and science of learning principles that emphasize student learning processes in the classroom - how students learn.

The authors offer signature pedagogies, which refer to the particular types of teaching distinct to a particular profession, as a framework for conceptualizing and advancing our knowledge about the pedagogical foundations in counselor education. Signature pedagogies are further defined at the professional, program, and course levels along with examples to connect signature pedagogies to the discipline of counselor education. The authors offer refection questions to encourage readers to apply the content of this article to their own conceptualizations of pedagogy and conceptualize research designs grounded in a unified understanding of pedagogy. Implications for counselor education and future research are presented.

All five senses contribute to the experience of eating, giving feedback on whether to continue or stop the process of consumption. Sensory feedback loops help the consumer modulate food ingestion by determining nutritional value and possible hazards. Texture is one sense integral to the eating process that may lead to a food being accepted or rejected. However, which specific oral textural features contribute to overall acceptance and rejection of a food is not well understood. The dissertation consists of three chapters in environmental economics and international trade. The first chapter identifies the effects of environmental regulation on Chinese manufacturing firms' markups. Difference-in-difference and triple-differenced estimates show that more stringent environmental regulation decreases firms' markups. Furthermore, environmental regulation has a significant impact on non-exporters' markups, but it has no impact on exporters. Examining pre-trends, we find that SOEs did not change their behavior in anticipation of environmental regulation, but non-SOEs started to adjust before the regulation was implemented. The second chapter evaluates how the market size affects the impact of environmental stringency on firms' economic activity. …

This dissertation examines yaupon drink, a tea made from yaupon holly along with other ingredients, as a medicine bundle in the Atlantic World. Originally a medicinal drink used by Native Americans across the what is today the American South, over time the tea became a trade good demanded by the Spanish and a medicinal herb sought by European botanists and medical practitioners. Chapter One traces yaupon’s origins across the southeast and bundles the drink into the many cosmic and social connections it held. Instructions that direct attention externally have been shown to enhance motor performance. However, research on learning effects has produced mixed findings, particularly in skilled populations, and particularly when realistic instructional protocols have been used. Most studies have presented an overly simplistic view of attention, such that all-internal focus protocols are contrasted with all-external focus protocols. Expert performers, however, have reported adopting combined approaches, revealing the need for research to test more realistic instructions. In the first chapter, we develop an n-player theoretical model applying the concept of Virtual Bargaining to study cooperative behavior in public goods games characterizing team production. Virtual Bargaining is a modeling framework that characterizes how players may construct a tacit agreement to coordinate behavior in the absence of explicit communication. Players identify their worst-possible payoff outcome from any candidate agreement, and mutually best-respond with respect to maximization of their worst-payoff function. The first chapter examines the long-run and short-run elasticity of income with respect to changes in tax rates. The Elasticity of Taxable Income (ETI) is a largely-debated parameter in both research and policy. Despite the growing importance of ETI, the literature has not fully considered the intertemporal impacts of taxation. I expand the literature by estimating short-run and long-run impacts of tax rate changes relying on the most recent estimation method and using appropriate lagged values of income when constructing the predicted net-of-tax rate instruments. Learning one is similar to a stigmatized group can threaten one’s identity and cause disassociation from that group. However, how would learning of an immutable similarity with a stigmatized outgroup, implying possible recategorization into that group, affect prejudice towards that group? In the current investigation, we explored how receiving feedback that one has a high genetic predisposition to become obese in the future affected implicitly- and explicitly-assessed antifat attitudes. In my first chapter, I use theory and experiments to compare market outcomes in a setting where the seller has better information on product quality than the buyer, and examine the effects of introducing a third-party who can credibly relay information on product quality. Willing White Flag: Voluntary Militia Disarmament In The Lebanese Civil War, Daniella Maria Khoury

This study examines the conditions under which militias embroiled in civil war choose to disarm. This study argues that militias more invested in domestic politics rather than engaging in regional rivalries, are more likely to choose to disarm voluntarily. The results show that after examining seven different militias in the context of the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), religious affiliation is neither a necessary nor sufficient condition to cause the drastic difference in the outcome of voluntary disarmament. The theory is proven correct when accounting for domestic and international relationships and militia commitment to operating within a particular level of analysis.

In this thesis, I examine how members of online vegan communities construct and perform epistemic stance through exploiting the affordances of alphabetic computer-mediated communication (CMC) to remediate paralinguistic features. The data are taken from two exchanges across two different online platforms: Facebook and Reddit. Working within the constraints of alphabetic CMC and the affordances of their respective platforms, interactants discuss vegan activism in ways that mimic traditional oral communication. Previous research shows that performance varies based on factors such as stimulus modality and number of distractors. This study aimed to explore the effect of response type on VWM performance in 4.5- and 5.5-year-olds.
