Compensating For Development At The In-Between And Edges Of Extractive Capitalism: Socionature And Cultural Erasure In The Northeast Caribbean Colombian Coal Mining Region, Tamra Gilbertson
Doctoral Dissertations
In northeast Caribbean Colombia, Indigenous Wayúu, Afro-Colombian, campesinos and fishing communities struggle against the socio-environmental impacts of multinational operated legal coal mining operations. This dissertation questions how the multinational coal mining industry has been able to cause direct, structural and cultural violence against human and nonhuman nature over the last thirty-five years. The systemic character of the longer material history of capitalism, war, violence and US military intervention in Colombia is connected to and continues in the 21st century in the name of development. The central argument put forth is that multinational coal mining corporations in Colombia, like extractive industries …
Consumer Preferences For Environmentally Friendly Disposable Dinnerware Alternatives, Mackenzie Gill
Consumer Preferences For Environmentally Friendly Disposable Dinnerware Alternatives, Mackenzie Gill
Masters Theses
In the context of growing concern surrounding the environmental impact of single-use paper and plastic waste, demand for alternatives to conventional disposables has recently increased. This study investigates factors driving consumer preferences for ecofriendly attributes in disposable dinnerware. The study subsequently measures willingness to pay for such an alternative; specifically, dinnerware molded from wheat straw. Data was collected from an online survey of 206 Tennessee consumers aged 18 and older who consider themselves to be the primary household food shopper.
The first part of this investigation uses a Multiple Indicator Multiple Causes (MIMIC) model to estimate the effects of demographics, …
The Human Dimension Of Nuclear Security: Legacy Of The Nuclear Security Summit, Franca Padoani
The Human Dimension Of Nuclear Security: Legacy Of The Nuclear Security Summit, Franca Padoani
International Journal of Nuclear Security
A deeply rooted nuclear security culture and adequate human resources at all levels – involving regulators, the law enforcement agencies, academia, industry - are universally recognized as the foundation of a robust and sustainable nuclear security regime, national and global. International cooperation and networks are fundamental elements in ensuring the development and sustainability of what may be called the “human dimension” of Nuclear Security, and the Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) process has been the cornerstone for their consolidation.
The Future Of Nuclear Security In The Asia-Pacific: Expanding The Role Of Southeast Asia, Julius Cesar Trajano, Mely Caballero-Anthony
The Future Of Nuclear Security In The Asia-Pacific: Expanding The Role Of Southeast Asia, Julius Cesar Trajano, Mely Caballero-Anthony
International Journal of Nuclear Security
The nature of regional cooperation on capacity building taking place in Southeast Asia certainly provides a good foundation to pursue a more robust collaborative framework for nuclear security in the wider Asia-Pacific region. A step in this regard is to have a regional action plan/roadmap for nuclear security in the Asia-Pacific that could institutionalize cooperation between Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other countries in the wider region, fostering closer collaboration. The paper recommends three practical mechanisms to expand cooperation frameworks in Southeast Asia to the broader Asia-Pacific region: (1) strengthening regional capacity building in nuclear security; (2) establishing …

This short piece presents an insider’s view of the International Nuclear Security Education Network (INSEN), and shows that the Network is not only a part of the evolving nuclear security regime, but also it drives the regime forward through academic research, teaching and cooperation which are facilitated by the meetings at the IAEA and social activities in extracurricular time in Vienna.
Sunken Efforts? Legal Hurdles To Stemming Maritime Cbrne Proliferation, Arjun Banerjee
Sunken Efforts? Legal Hurdles To Stemming Maritime Cbrne Proliferation, Arjun Banerjee
International Journal of Nuclear Security
For four centuries, the law of the sea has rested on the principle of mare liberum or the freedom of the high seas. The oceans have traditionally been regarded as areas over which no state could claim dominion or sovereignty. Nations desirous of countering security threats have found that their efforts are curtailed by the traditional paradigm, partly because of the resistance from other states to permit further derogation. Several extant laws aim to contain the spread of CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) material through a variety of measures. Certain bilateral agreements between nations exist, but the foreign vessel …
Coordination Of Inter-Agency Action For Nuclear Security In Uganda, Richard Sseggane
Coordination Of Inter-Agency Action For Nuclear Security In Uganda, Richard Sseggane
International Journal of Nuclear Security
Despite the dynamic threats to the nuclear security of the East and Central African region, and the decision of the Government of Uganda to embark on a nuclear power programme, there was not much put in place as a coordination and cooperation mechanisms among the stakeholders in the nuclear security activities.
This work confirmed the need in Uganda for the major nuclear security stakeholder agencies with roles and mandates for nuclear security including the regulator, security and intelligence agencies, police, border control, transport control, customs agencies and others to work together as necessary in the different nuclear security activities in …
Challenges And Opportunities For Sharing Threat Information With Radioactive Materials Operators, Raphael Duguay
Challenges And Opportunities For Sharing Threat Information With Radioactive Materials Operators, Raphael Duguay
International Journal of Nuclear Security
Operators are required to implement security measures to address requirements set by the regulatory body or competent authority. These security requirements are generally based on the national threat level and information provided by the relevant law enforcement authority, intelligence agencies and other relevant stakeholders. However, not all States can share this information with radioactive materials holders (e.g., operators), especially if they take a more prescriptive approach to regulation on security. The same situation often exists when a performance-based approach is used because there are multiple barriers that restrict the competent authority from sharing threat information. For example, competent authorities need …

Ecosystem Services Of Urban Tree Canopy For The Mitigation Of Climate Change: Measuring Carbon Sequestration And Understory Temperature Reduction Of Knoxville’S Urban Forest, Tyler Hounshell
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
In the future, the city of Knoxville, Tennessee will be impacted by climate warming due to anthropogenic climate change. Yet, the ecosystem services provided by urban tree canopy in Knoxville’s urban forest can help mitigate the effects of climate warming. In addition to improving air quality, regulating water flow, and reducing noise pollution, Knoxville’s urban forest serves as a carbon sink and sequesters carbon dioxide on an annual basis. Utilizing methods for calculating carbon sequestration by trees in urban and suburban settings developed by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the sequestration potential and its uncertainty is calculated until the year …
Acronym Usage In Groups: The Relationship Of Socialization And Identification, Dara K. Carney-Nedelman
Acronym Usage In Groups: The Relationship Of Socialization And Identification, Dara K. Carney-Nedelman
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
This study analyzed the relationship between knowledge of acronym meaning and group member’s socialization and identification. It examined the understudied relationship between knowledge of acronym meaning for group members and their socialization and identification in the group. Research has concluded that when assimilated into a group the group members contribute more, and overall have greater satisfaction (Riddle, Anderson, & Martin, 2000). This assimilation can be separated into two variables, socialization and identification of group members. Research on the relationship for knowledge of acronym meaning and assimilation has been understudied; therefore, this project explored how the terms we use in groups …
Defining Insanity: How An Individual's View Can Impact A Trial, Jayme L. Ayres
Defining Insanity: How An Individual's View Can Impact A Trial, Jayme L. Ayres
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
The insanity plea has always been a controversial topic among anyone. No one sees eye to eye on the matter. This can present a problem within professional fields. When insanity cases are brought into courtrooms, legal and psychology professionals need to be able to agree to some extent. However, these professionals have no true control on how jurors define insanity. Jurors tend to determine guilty or not guilty in insanity cases, based on their own personal views. The current study is a replication of Doctor John Geiger’s 2003 and 2008 study of how legal professionals and undergraduate psychology students view …
Please, Hold Your Toothpicks: An Analysis Of Autism On Contemporary Television, Kellie N. Veltri
Please, Hold Your Toothpicks: An Analysis Of Autism On Contemporary Television, Kellie N. Veltri
Haslam Scholars Projects
In the past decade, there has been a boom in representations of varied identities on entertainment television, including characters with mental illness and disabilities. There has particularly been an increase in television representations of autism spectrum disorders, which has coincided with the reframing of autism in the DSM-5. Exposure to these characters has increased public awareness of what autism actually looks like, but their characteristics are still very narrow and do not represent the full range of people with autism and what their experiences with the condition are actually like. In this thesis, I will explore historic representations of autism …
