The Effects Of Stress And Anxiety On A Cued Attention Task, Catalina L. Gonzalez
The Effects Of Stress And Anxiety On A Cued Attention Task, Catalina L. Gonzalez
EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement
Previous research has shown visual attention tasks like the Infant Orienting With Attention (IOWA) Task are effective in identifying individual differences in spatial attention (Ross-Sheehy et al., 2015). Given visual attention is influenced by factors like stress/anxiety (Grillon et al, 2016) it may be possible to use attention tasks to identify participants high in stress and/or anxiety. Fifty-four adults completed a modified version of the IOWA task. Participants then completed the Perceived Stress Scale and Beck Anxiety Inventory, and were divided into three groups: Low_Stress/Low_Anxiety (LSLA), High_Stress/Low_Anxiety (HSLA), and High_Stress/High_Anxiety (HSHA). A Condition x Stress Group ANOVA revealed only a …

Acute Social Defeat-Induced Neuroinflammation In The Vmpfc Of Syrian Hamsters Via Microglial Activation, Thomas Clarity
Acute Social Defeat-Induced Neuroinflammation In The Vmpfc Of Syrian Hamsters Via Microglial Activation, Thomas Clarity
EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement
Research suggests causal relationships between neuroinflammation and stress-related psychopathologies. Exposure to moderate or chronic psychological stress in rodents leads to increased activation of microglia, the brain’s resident immune cells. The ventral medial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) is a key limbic region involved in top-down regulation of psychological stress and mediates the deleterious effects of microglial activity following prolonged restraint stress. While there is a growing body of literature indicating that chronic social defeat increases microglial activity in the vmPFC, there has been little research investigating the effects of acute social defeat stress. Here, we used an acute social defeat paradigm in …

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
Since 2015, the Government of India has been designing policies for transforming the country with over 400 million unbanked adults into a cashless economy so that a majority of financial transactions can be carried over mobile devices, the most widely used information and communication technology in the country. However, over 200 million adults earning less than $2 a day have a low or little mobile, financial, or information literacy. This short paper reports a newly proposed interdisciplinary, six-step toolkit operationalized using a survey questionnaire, focus group prompts, and hands-on training for developing mobile, financial, and information literacy among the poor …

Seeking, Reading, And Use Of Scholarly Articles: An International Study Of Perceptions And Behavior Of Researchers., Carol Tenopir, Lisa Christian, Jordan Kaufman
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
While journal articles are still considered the most important sources of scholarly reading, libraries may no longer have a monopoly on providing discovery and access. Many other sources of scholarly information are available to readers. This international study examines how researchers discover, read, and use scholarly literature for their work. Respondents in 2018 report an average of almost 20 article readings a month and there are still significant differences found in the reading and use of scholarly literature by discipline and geographical location, consistent with the earlier studies. Researchers show they are willing to change or adopt new strategies to …

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
We proposed the implementation of a course dedicated to the etiology and treatment of process addictions in counselor-training programs. We described the nature of the course and results of paired samples t-tests examining differences in 23 students’ preferences, competence, importance, and understanding at the beginning and end of the semester. Specifically, student preference for working with process addictions, competence, and understanding of process addictions significantly increased with large effect sizes at the completion of the course. We concluded with a description of implications for counselor educators and counselor-training programs.

Am I My Peers’ Keeper? Problems Of Professional Competency In Doctoral Students, Kathleen Brown-Rice, Susan Furr
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
Addressing problems of professional competency (PPC) among doctoral students is essential given that doctoral students will become our future counselor educators. In this study, doctoral students (N = 345) in CACREP-accredited programs were surveyed about their knowledge of peers’ PPC. The findings of this study indicate doctoral students are aware of peers with PPC (68.1%), which include inadequate skills to deliver counseling services as well as problematic behaviors related to personal or psychological issues. Findings suggest respondents are affected negatively by being in a program with a peer they perceive has a PPC (47.9%) and are frustrated with educators for …

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
Multilingual diversity is increasing in the United States, with Spanish being the nation’s second most common spoken language (U.S. Census, 2016). In response, more Spanish-speaking bilingual counselors are providing bilingual counseling services. These counselors face unique experiences related to the constellation of language, culture, and professional development. Yet, supervisors are working with these counselors and little is known about their experiences or specific supervision strategies. This article presents the results of interviews with supervisors (N=8) of Spanish-speaking bilingual counselors regarding their supervision strategies. Implications for supervisors are provided.

The Retention Of Adult Sport Participants: The Challenge Of Player Ratings, Edward Horne, Matthew Brown
Journal of Applied Sport Management
The current study investigates the retention of competitive tennis players in the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA’s) adult league system to answer the following questions: What factors do participants identify as impactful to their participation in adult league tennis? How do participants believe these factors impact their retention? Results suggest participants believe the current system fails to incentivize development as competitors fail to transition successfully to a higher rating and struggle socializing into a new team. Competitors therefore seek to cheat the system. The current study illustrates the importance for league policymakers to consider unintended consequences and provides recommendations. Subscribe …

Becoming a partner in the research process and enabling access to the scholarship of e-science is a natural evolution of the traditional roles of academic libraries. Managing research data can be an important aspect of this expanded role, although many academic librarians may not feel they have the necessary preparation, skills, and capacity to effectively provide research data services. In addition, researchers need to understand the degree to which these services are becoming part of the core services offered by academic librarians in a variety of settings. Knowledge of the possibilities and confidence in their respective roles with research data …

Fandom On The Air: Assessing Regional Identity Through College Football Radio Networks, J. A. Cooper, Edward H. Davis
Geography Publications and Other Works
Sports fandom represents a significant aspect of place identity, as demonstrated by the colorful landscapes associated with team loyalty. However, there has been little research on the geography of sports fandom. While several geographers have studied the link between Southern regional identity and the sport of stock car racing, American football is the most popular spectator sport in the United States, and it seems to have a particular strength in the United States South. Therefore, examining the geography of football fandom can add depth to the study of place identity. A 1988 article by Roseman and Shelley on the geography …

Journal of Applied Sport Management
This study describes the emergency action plan (EAP) adoption in secondary school athletics reported by athletic administrators in the United States. Utilizing best-practice criteria, a questionnaire assessed athletic administrators’ knowledge and adoption of an EAP in their athletics program. A majority of athletic administrators reported having an EAP; however, the EAP often lacked the necessary components to be compliant with best-practice guidelines. Further, access to an athletic trainer was associated with increased EAP adoption and adopting a venue specific EAP. Athletic administrators should utilize these data to facilitate improved policy adoption and management of athletics programs.

Open peer review (OPR) is an important innovation in the open science movement. OPR can play a significant role in advancing scientific communication by increasing its transparency. Despite the growing interest in OPR, adoption of this innovation since the turn of the century has been slow. This study provides the first comprehensive investigation of OPR adoption, its early adopters and the implementation models used. We identified 174 current OPR journals and analysed their wide-ranging implementations to derive emerging OPR models. The findings suggest that: 1) there has been a steady growth in OPR adoption since 2001 when 38 journals initially …

Innovations are critical for public libraries but rarely any primary research studies the scope and interpretation of the term “innovation” by public libraries. Also, few of the existing innovation typologies are based on data collected from public libraries. This study fills in the gap by eliciting 80 innovations reported by the administrators of 108, award-winning public libraries in the United States, and proposes the first organic classification of innovations for public libraries, with the following four types of innovations: Program (access-oriented/use- oriented), Process (efficiency-driven/effectiveness-driven), Partnership (internal/external), and Technology (web-based technologies/assistive technologies/artificial intelligence). Findings can advance the state of innovations in …
