This study discusses the superior effect of thixoforming process on enhancing the tensile properties of aluminium matrix composite produced using flake metallurgy route. The flake metallurgy process was utilised to manufacture aluminium matrix composites followed by thixoforming process. Microstructural investigations carried out using transmission electron microscope have shown the synergic effect of thixoforming process on rendering uniform distribution of SiC nanoparticles associated with lower porosity content. X-ray diffraction characterisations have revealed the promising effect of uniform dispersion of SiC nanoparticles on restricting the grain growth of aluminium matrix within nanoscale regime (90 nm) even at high semi-solid thixoforming temperatures (575 …

In this study, texture modelling of a copper single crystal processed by accumulative roll-bonding (ARB) was conducted for the first time. A crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) model was developed, and the predicated textures were validated by the experimental observations conducted by another research group. A heterogeneous through-thickness deformation was revealed. Two types of matrix bands formed through the thickness after the first ARB cycle, and different crystal rotation, slip system activation, and shear strain evolved in matrix bands. This study is Part 1 of two studies which investigate the use of various flexible surface sensors as an alternative to the gold standard Ag/AgCl surface electromyography (sEMG) electrodes in identifying movement intention from a user during common hand gestures. Three conductive textiles, two commercial conductive elastomers and one E-skin elastomer produced on site were tested as biopotential electrodes to establish the efficacy of each in gathering movement intention from the human brain at the level of the muscle. Soft robots which are made of highly deformable materials are ideal to operate in unstructured environments and to interact safely with humans. This work presents directly 3D printed linear soft vacuum actuators (LSOVA), that are manufactured in a single step without requiring any post-processing and support material, using a low-cost and open-source fused deposition modeling 3D printer. LSOVA have multiple advantages such as high bandwidths (~6.49Hz), high output forces (~27N) and long lifetimes (~21,500 cycles). We present ideas about concepts underlying climate change, held by students in years 9 and 10. Misconceptions about climate change are common among students, and may be due to misconceptions about underlying concepts. To investigate this, we developed the Climate Change Concept Inventory (CCCI), and trialed it with 229 students; corroborating findings through focus group interviews. Our interview method and data analysis methods are described. Findings included overestimation of human contributions to atmospheric carbon inputs, ultra violet radiation in sunlight, and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Pancreatic cancer is a common malignant tumor with high incidence of metastasis. Currently, there is no absolute standard for the choice of b-value for diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) for pancreatic cancer. The b-value is rarely reported in animal model study, especially in pancreatic cancer/mass pancreatitis rabbit models. The authors' aim was to determine the different b-values to differentiate the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and mass pancreatitis in rabbit models using DWI. 2019 Zinc removal from basic oxygen steelmaking filter cake was studied by tablet testing and in a millipot under different conditions. The results from tablet testing show that coke and metallic iron in filter cake play the role of reductants to remove zinc during sintering. Zinc removal increased with increasing temperature and decreasing partial pressure of oxygen. Zinc removal reached 24.6% when a tablet of filter cake without addition of coke was sintered at 1300 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere. Addition of 3 to 9 wt% of coke breeze into filter cake enhanced the zinc removal to 60.6 to 91.4%, …

With a large number of tunnel boring machines (TBM) being used in various tunnel constructions, the vibration problem under complex geological conditions have become increasingly prominent. In order to solve the problem, this article investigates the application of an adaptive magnetorheological (MR) damper on the vibration reduction of a TBM. The MR damper could reduce the horizontal vibration of the TBM system and adjust its dragging force on the propulsive system under different geological conditions. The response of a 5 lm thin silicon on insulator (SOI) 3D microdosimeter was investigated for single event upset applications by measuring the LET of different high LET ions. The charge collection characteristics of the device was performed using the Ion Beam Induced Charge collection (IBIC) technique with 3 and 5.5 MeV He2+ ions incident on the microdosimeter. The microdosimeter was irradiated with 16O, 56Fe and 124Xe ions and was able to determine the LET within 5% for most configurations apart from 124Xe. It was observed that on average, measured LET was 12% lower for 30 MeV/u 124Xe ion traversing …

Microbeam Radiation Therapy (MRT) is an emerging cancer treatment modality characterised by the use of high-intensity synchrotron-generated x-rays, spatially fractionated by a multi-slit collimator (MSC), to ablate target tumours. Analog Least Mean Square (ALMS) loop is a promising method to cancel self-interference (SI) in in-band full-duplex (IBFD) systems. In this talk, the steady state analyses of the residual SI powers in both analog and digital domains are derived in frequency domain. It is proved that the ALMS loop amplifies the frequency components of the residual SI at the edges of the signal spectrum in the analog domain, but the matched filter in the receiver chain reduces this effect. Coal and gas outburst is a potentially fatal risk during the mining of gassy coal seams, which seriously threatens the safe mining of collieries. To understand the outburst mechanism and evolution rules, a new apparatus (LSTT) was developed to conduct simulated experiment. In the context of an outburst accident in Dingji coal mine, the authors launched an authentic outburst experiment to replay the outburst accident. Creep behavior is one of the most important mechanical behaviors of coal. In the present study, we systematically carried out a series of creep experiments of briquette samples under triaxial compression and gas pressure. The experimental results showed that the creep deformation characteristics of coal were related to deviatoric stress and gas pressure. The accelerating creep stage initiated when the deviatoric stress reached or exceeded the yield stress until failure took place. In contrast, when the deviatoric stress was less than the yield strength, only transient and steady creep stage occurred. Besides, gas pressure played a positive role in the …
