Part of UNESCO's Action Research in Family and Early Childhood series, this monograph is based upon a technical report on the Early Childhood Education (ECE) component of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) program in India. This document overviews the ICDS and how better use could be made of World Food Programme (WFP) food aid along with the ECE component, including the aspect of providing education to mothers and adolescent girls. The steps of two immunofluorescent-antibody-based detection methods were evaluated for their efficiencies in detecting Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts. The two methods evaluated were the American Society for Testing and Materials proposed test method for Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts in low-turbidity water and a procedure employing sampling by membrane filtration, Percoll-Percoll step gradient, and immunofluorescent staining. The membrane filter sampling method was characterized by higher recovery rates in all three types of waters tested: raw surface water, partially treated water from a flocculation basin, and filtered water. Cyst and oocyst recovery efficiencies decreased with increasing water turbidity regardless of …

We studied the molecular epidemiology of the recent fast-food restaurant chain-associated Escherichia coli O157:H7 outbreak in Washington State. Genomic DNAs prepared from strains isolated from 433 patients were probed with radiolabelled Shiga-like toxin (SLT) I and SLT II genes and bacteriophage l DNA and were subsequently analyzed for their restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) patterns. The SLT RFLP and l RFLP profiles of an E. coli O157:H7 strain isolated from the incriminated beef and prototype patient were compared with those of the patient isolates for determination of the concordance between patterns. Detection of objects in images in an automated fashion is necessary for many applications, including automated target recognition. In this paper, we present results of boundary detection using Markov random fields. Once the boundaries of regions are detected, object recognition can be conducted to classify the regions within the boundaries. Thus, an approach that gives good boundary detection is very important in many automated target recognition systems. Our algorithm for boundary detection combines a Bayesian approach with a histogram specification technique to locate edges of objects that have a closed-loop boundary. Ball milling of Mo in nitrogen and ammonia gases has been studied. After heating, the formation of an intriguing ternary compound, Fe3Mo3C1−x , was observed as a result of Fe (and C) contamination from the milling apparatus. For a comparison, mechanical alloying of Fe–Mo–C powders with a stoichiometric composition of Fe3Mo3C was also performed and again an Fe–Mo–C alloy was obtained after milling.Thermal analysis shows a single transition peak for the formation of both the Fe3Mo3C phase in the latter case and also for Fe3 …

Using local authority planning in Dublin as a case study. the extent and effectiveness of community and development interests' participation in policy formulation is examined. A primary locus is on the nature and timing of participation as a determinant of the relalive influence that each can exert over policy decisions. A critical distinction is drawn between formal and informal participation channels. The vast array of informal channels available to development interests can mean that they have little need to participate formally; thus a primary and secondary layer of influence on policy formulation can be distinguished. The Imprint Of Tsunami In Quaternary Coastal Sediments Of Southeastern Australia, R. W. Young, Edward A. Bryant, David M. Price, E. Spassov

TL and 14C dating has revealed anomalous chronostratigraphies at two sites on the coast of southern New South Wales, Australia, where Pleistocene sands have been driven onshore over Holocene estuarine deposits. Lack of solar bleaching of the TL component which occurs in normal swash zones, an identical TL age obtained from pumice incorporated in the Pleistocene deposit, and boulders scattered through the sand are indicative of tsunami impact. These observations prompt reassessment of the strictly uniformitarian models of barrier emplacement during the Holocene transgression both in eastern Australia and elsewhere in the world where tsunami are a possibility.

The centre of attention was two roughly formed concrete seated figures depicting naked Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip of the United Kingdom. This paper reports on the use of a multimedia journal to enhance a subject in technology education. The subject was delivered to preservice teachers studying to be primary school teachers. The multimedia journal was used to assist in the delivery of the subject and to record the progress made by students. It is argued that multimedia used in this manner complements and extends upon the teaching program and becomes an integral part of the learning process.

This case study centres on the information literacy program for first year undergraduate students at the University of Wollongong Library. The university has one central library servicing an eftsu student population of approximately 9,100. In 1995, 3,000 of these are commencing undergraduates. In global terms this is a small university and, mainly due to physical restrictions of~e campus, it is not predicted to grow above 10,700 eftsu by the year 2000. Therefore, the impact of student numbers on the provision of service will not dramatically change in the near future. A multiplier on a normal subsemigroup of a group can be extended to a multiplier on the group. This is used to show that normal cancellative semigroups have the same second cohomology as the group they generate, generalising earlier results of Arveson, Chernoff, and Dinh. The main tool is a dilation theorem for isometric multiplier representations of semigroups.

In this paper, we outline some of the problems facing research workers in Australian universities, with an emphasis on research assistants, the lowest classification of paid research worker. It is concluded that, while conditions have improved slightly since 1978, research assistants are still among the most marginalised public sector employees, and subjected to employment conditions which should be considered unacceptable in a society which values the benefits accruing from research activities.

The development and use of performance indicators in higher education has become a major topic for research and discussion throughout the world. Research efforts and resources are being channeled into improving their use. These efforts include extending the range (including developing indicators of quality) and objectivity of indicators; improving the procedures for measuring weighting and combining performance indicators; and refining procedures for linking funding and resource allocation to performance indicators. Several laser-based sensors for use on blast furnaces have been developed and implemented, including a raceway sensor, burden level sensor (single point) and burden surface profiler. These sensors are based on the time-of-flight technique and give high levels of accuracy in all applications. The data obtained from the sensors during normal furnace operations are examined in light of the process models utilised by operators and for the interpretation of pulverised coal injection performance. Raceway sensory data obtained during a furnace blow-in are also discussed.

The formation of an AlN compound in ball milled Al powder in ammonia was studied. In this work a magneto‐ball milling device with controlled ball movement was used. The end milling product was an Al based nanostructure. This product can be transformed into an AlN‐Al nanocomposite upon heating below the melting point of Al. It was found that the level of unreacted Al is dependent on milling time. The maximum amount of AlN was 88.28 wt %. The structure of as‐milled and annealed samples was investigated using x‐ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy. Differential thermal analysis was performed on as‐milled …

Based on the linearized long-wave equation, two new analytical solutions are obtained respectively for the propagation of long surface gravity waves around a conical island and over a paraboloidal shoal. Having been intensively studied during the last two decades, these two problems have practical significance and are physically revealing for wave propagation over variable water depth. The newly derived analytical solutions are compared with several previously obtained numerical solutions and the accuracy of those numerical solutions is discussed. The analytical method has the potential to be used to find solutions for wave propagation over more natural bottom topographies.

A three-dimensional barotropic and baroclinic model is developed to simulate currents and temperature changes induced by tropical cyclones traversing the continental shelf and slope region of the Australian North West Shelf. The model is based on a layered, explicit, finite difference formulation using the nonlinear primitive equations with an embedded entrainment scheme; a mixed-surface-layer interface is defined, which is allowed to shift from one interface to another, depending on the strength of a storm. The model has been tested by simulating the currents and temperature changes induced by tropical cyclones Orson and Ian. The modelled currents and temperatures agreed well …
