Experimental Investigation Of Circular High-Strength Concrete Columns Reinforced With Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Bars And Helices Under Different Loading Conditions, Muhammad N. S Hadi, Hayder Alaa Hasan, M Neaz Sheikh
Experimental Investigation Of Circular High-Strength Concrete Columns Reinforced With Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Bars And Helices Under Different Loading Conditions, Muhammad N. S Hadi, Hayder Alaa Hasan, M Neaz Sheikh
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
Existing design codes and guidelines do not adequately address the design of concrete columns reinforced with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars. Accordingly, a number of research studies investigated the behavior of FRP bar-reinforced concrete columns. However, the previous studies were limited to FRP bar-reinforced normal-strength concrete (NSC) columns. In this study, the behavior of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bar-reinforced high-strength concrete (HSC) specimens under different loading conditions was investigated in terms of axial load-carrying capacity, confinement efficiency of the GFRP helices, as well as the ductility and post-peak axial load-axial deformation response. The effects of the key parameters such as the …

Disturbance Observer Based Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Control For An Active Seat Suspension, Donghong Ning, Shuaishuai Sun, Fei Zhang, Haiping Du, Weihua Li, Bangji Zhang
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
In this paper, a disturbance observer based Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy controller is proposed for an active seat suspension; both simulations and experiments have been performed verifying the performance enhancement and stability of the proposed controller. The controller incorporates closed-loop feedback control using the measured acceleration of the seat and deflection of the suspension; these two variables can be easily measured in practical applications, thus allowing the proposed controller to be robust and adaptable. A disturbance observer that can estimate the disturbance caused by friction, model simplification, and controller output error has also been used to compensate a H¿ state feedback …

Accurate Range Estimation For An Electric Vehicle Including Changing Environmental Conditions And Traction System Efficiency, Kaveh Sarrafan, Danny Sutanto, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Graham Town
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
Range anxiety is an obstacle to the acceptance of electric vehicles (EVs), caused by drivers' uncertainty regarding their vehicle's state of charge (SoC) and the energy required to reach their destination. Most estimation methods for these variables use simplified models with many assumptions that can result in significant error, particularly if dynamic and environmental conditions are not considered. For example, the combined efficiency of the inverter drive and electric motor varies throughout the route and is not constant as assumed in most range estimation methods. This study proposes an improved method for SoC and range estimation by taking into account …
A Framework For Geotechnical Hazard Analysis In Highwall Mining Entries, Marc Elmouttie, Shivakumar Karekal
A Framework For Geotechnical Hazard Analysis In Highwall Mining Entries, Marc Elmouttie, Shivakumar Karekal
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
Highwall mining involves driving a series of parallel entries with web pillars in between. These entries are driven by using a continuous miner with attached conveying system to extract locked up coal behind the highwall slope when the open cut coal mine reaches its ultimate limit. These entries are driven unmanned, unventilated and unsupported. Therefore, a detailed knowledge of structural features ahead of operations is essential in assessing the stability of these entries. Highwall mining operations can greatly benefit from accurate structural mapping of rock mass defects. The stability of these entries can be suitably assessed for any major roof …
Impact Of Wastewater Derived Dissolved Interfering Compounds On Growth, Enzymatic Activity And Trace Organic Contaminant Removal Of White Rot Fungi - A Critical Review, Muhammad Bilal Asif, Faisal I. Hai, Jingwei Hou, William E. Price, Long D. Nghiem
Impact Of Wastewater Derived Dissolved Interfering Compounds On Growth, Enzymatic Activity And Trace Organic Contaminant Removal Of White Rot Fungi - A Critical Review, Muhammad Bilal Asif, Faisal I. Hai, Jingwei Hou, William E. Price, Long D. Nghiem
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
White-rot fungi (WRF) and their ligninolytic enzymes have been investigated for the removal of a broad spectrum of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) mostly from synthetic wastewater in lab-scale experiments. Only a few studies have reported the efficiency of such systems for the removal of TrOCs from real wastewater. Wastewater derived organic and inorganic compounds can inhibit: (i) WRF growth and their enzyme production capacity; (ii) enzymatic activity of ligninolytic enzymes; and (iii) catalytic efficiency of both WRF and enzymes. It is observed that essential metals such as Cu, Mn and Co at trace concertation (up to 1 mM) can improve …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
A new composite column named concrete-encased concrete-filled fibre reinforced polymer tube (CCFT) column has been proposed in this study. This composite column consists of an inner concrete-filled fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) tube, outer concrete confined with polymer grid, and concrete cover. In this study, a total of 16 concrete stub columns were cast and tested under axial compression. Columns were divided into eight groups, which included one group of plain concrete columns, two groups of FRP confined concrete columns, and five groups of CCFT columns. For FRP confined concrete columns, one layer and two layers of carbon FRP (CFRP) sheet …
Constraining The Mass Balance Of East Antarctica, Alba Martin-Espanol, Jonathan Bamber, Andrew Zammit-Mangion
Constraining The Mass Balance Of East Antarctica, Alba Martin-Espanol, Jonathan Bamber, Andrew Zammit-Mangion
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
We investigate the mass balance of East Antarctica for the period 2003-2013 using a Bayesian statistical framework. We combine satellite altimetry, gravimetry, and GPS with prior assumptions characterizing the underlying geophysical processes. We run three experiments based on two different assumptions to study possible solutions to the mass balance. We solve for trends in surface mass balance, ice dynamics, and glacial isostatic adjustment. The first assumption assigns low probability to ice dynamic mass loss in regions of slow flow, giving a mean dynamic trend of 17 ± 10 Gt yr-1 and a total mass imbalance of 57 ± 20 Gt …

Trucks Are Destroying Our Roads And Not Picking Up The Repair Cost, Philip G. Laird
Trucks Are Destroying Our Roads And Not Picking Up The Repair Cost, Philip G. Laird
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
It's high time Australia changed its current road user charges for trucks. The shortfall between the charges for heavy vehicles and the money spent on things like road system maintenance, construction costs, road crashes involving heavy trucks, emissions, pollution and urban road congestion amounts to a taxpayer subsidy for the industry of at least A$3 billion per annum. The current charges, like those of cars, rely only on annual registration fees and fuel taxation. Instead Australia should be following the lead of New Zealand, Switzerland and some other European countries and introducing a charge system based on mass and distance. …

Osmotic Membrane Bioreactors For Wastewater Reuse: Performance Comparison Between Cellulose Triacetate And Polyamide Thin Film Composite Membranes, Bangxi Zhang, Xiaoye Song, Long D. Nghiem, Guoxue Li, Wenhai Luo
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
This study compared the performance of the asymmetric cellulose triacetate (CTA) and polyamide thin film composite (TFC) forward osmosis (FO) membranes in an osmotic membrane bioreactor (OMBR). A reverse osmosis (RO) system was integrated with OMBR to regenerate the draw solution and produce clean water. Results show that the TFC membrane exhibited a higher initial water flux but more dramatic flux decline compared to the CTA membrane when they were used for OMBR. The CTA and TFC membranes also resulted in discernible difference in salinity build-up in the bioreactor and thus biomass characteristics during OMBR operation. All 30 trace organic …

Analysis Of A Compact Annular-Radial-Orifice Flow Magnetorheological Valve And Evaluation Of Its Performance, Guoliang Hu, Mingke Liao, Weihua Li
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
This article outlines a compact annular-radial-orifice flow magnetorheological valve through theoretical calculation, simulation analysis and experiment verification. The fluid flow paths of this proposed magnetorheological valve consist of a single annular flow channel, a single radial flow channel and an orifice flow channel through structural design. The finite element modelling and analysis of the magnetorheological valve was carried out using ANSYS/Emag software, including achieving optimal magnetic field distribution and yield stress in the annular flow path and radial flow path, respectively. Moreover, this proposed magnetorheological valve was prototyped and evaluated experimentally, showing that the magnetorheological valve has significantly improved its …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
A novel method to process electrospun poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) membranes incorporating glass reinforced hydroxyapatite granules (gHA) interspacially between the polymeric fibers is reported, thus increasing the surface area for cellular interactions. gHA granules (≤150 μm) electrospun together with the polymer solution, lead to an average fiber diameter of 550 ± 150 nm for pristine PLLA and 440 ± 170 nm for the composite samples. An increase of the overall porosity was observed, from 79 ± 3% for the PLLA up to 88 ± 5% for the hybrid samples, keeping material’s wettability and mechanical properties. Bone-bonding ability showed that both samples …

On The Energy Efficiency Of Adaptive Wban Systems For Mhealth Services, Miftadi Sudjai, Le Chung Tran, Farzad Safaei
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
We recently proposed an adaptive Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) system for mHealth service, which shows better bit error performance compared to the non-adaptive one. However, analysis and maximization of the energy efficiency as one of the key design considerations of these networks remain an open problem. Therefore, this paper investigates the energy efficiency of the proposed adaptive WBAN system by considering both the transmission power and the power consumed in the circuitry which consists of rate-independent and rate-dependent components. Since the distance between the hub and the wireless access point in WBAN is relatively short, beside the transmission power, …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
This paper presents a study of the interface of geogrid reinforced subballast through a series of large-scale direct shear tests and discrete element modelling. Direct shear tests were carried out for subballast with and without geogrid inclusions under varying normal stresses of σn = 6.7 to 45 kPa. Numerical modelling with three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) was used to study the shear behaviour of the interface of subballast reinforced by geogrids. In this study, groups of 25-50 spherical balls are clumped together in appropriate sizes to simulate angular subballast grains, while the geogrid is modelled by bonding small spheres …

Authentication refers to the process of confirming the identity of the authenticating entity. The use of passwords for user authentication has become ubiquitous in our everyday lives. Despite its wide-spread usage, password-based authentication has numerous deficiencies. For instance, password theft is becoming a common occurrence due to a variety of security problems associated with passwords. As such, many organizations are moving towards adopting alternative solutions like one-time passwords, which are only valid for a single session. Nevertheless, various one-time password schemes also suffer from a number of drawbacks in terms of their method of generation or delivery. In this chapter, we …

Metamorphic Testing For Adobe Data Analytics Software, Darryl C. Jarman, Zhiquan Zhou, Tsong Yueh Chen
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
It is challenging to test data analytics software because a test oracle might not be available. This study reports our experience of applying metamorphic testing to Adobe's data analytics software that is used for anomaly detection in a set of time series data. We make use of geometric transformations to build metamorphic relations and generate simple time series data as the source test cases. The results of this study show that metamorphic testing is highly effective for both verification and validation purposes. An investigation of the issues detected during metamorphic testing revealed three bugs in the software under test.
Hierarchical Functional Encryption For Linear Transformations, Shiwei Zhang, Yi Mu, Guomin Yang, Xiaofen Wang
Hierarchical Functional Encryption For Linear Transformations, Shiwei Zhang, Yi Mu, Guomin Yang, Xiaofen Wang
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
In contrast to the conventional all-or-nothing encryption, functional encryption (FE) allows partial revelation of encrypted information based on the keys associated with different functionalities. Extending FE with key delegation ability, hierarchical functional encryption (HFE) enables a secret key holder to delegate a portion of its decryption ability to others and the delegation can be done hierarchically. All HFE schemes in the literature are for general functionalities and not very practical. In this paper, we focus on the functionality of linear transformations (i.e. matrix product evaluation). We refine the definition of HFE and further extend the delegation to accept multiple keys. …
Mergeable And Revocable Identity-Based Encryption, Shengmin Xu, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Willy Susilo
Mergeable And Revocable Identity-Based Encryption, Shengmin Xu, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Willy Susilo
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
Identity-based encryption (IBE) has been extensively studied and widely used in various applications since Boneh and Franklin proposed the first practical scheme based on pairing. In that seminal work, it has also been pointed out that providing an efficient revocation mechanism for IBE is essential. Hence, revocable identity-based encryption (RIBE) has been proposed in the literature to offer an efficient revocation mechanism. In contrast to revocation, another issue that will also occur in practice is to combine two or multiple IBE systems into one system, e.g., due to the merge of the departments or companies. However, this issue has not …

Privacy-Preserving K-Time Authenticated Secret Handshakes, Yangguang Tian, Shiwei Zhang, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Yong Yu
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
Secret handshake allows a group of authorized users to establish a shared secret key and at the same time authenticate each other anonymously. A straightforward approach to design an unlinkable secret handshake protocol is to use either long-term certificate or one-time certificate provided by a trusted authority. However, how to detect the misusing of certificates by an insider adversary is a challenging security issue when using those approaches for unlinkable secret handshake. In this paper, we propose a novel k-time authenticated secret handshake (k-ASH) protocol where each authorized user is only allowed to use the credential for k times. We …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
We present the discovery and preliminary characterization of a gravitationally lensed quasar with a source redshift zs = 2.74 and image separation of 2.9 arcsec lensed by a foreground zl = 0.40 elliptical galaxy. Since optical observations of gravitationally lensed quasars show the lens system as a superposition of multiple point sources and a foreground lensing galaxy, we have developed a morphology-independent multi-wavelength approach to the photometric selection of lensed quasar candidates based on Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) supervised machine learning. Using this technique and gi multicolour photometric observations from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), near-IR JK photometry …

Radiation therapy is rapidly evolving toward the delivery of higher dose rates to improve cancer treatment. In vitro experiments were performed to investigate the response of 9L and MCF-7 cancer cell lines, exposed to 10 MV X-ray radiations. Up to 8 Gy was delivered at a dose-rate of 50 cGy/min compared to 5 Gy/min. The data obtained emphasizes the importance of taking into account not only the physical, but also the radiobiological parameters, when planning a particular cancer treatment.

Construction Of Sno2-Graphene Composite With Half-Supported Cluster Structure As Anode Toward Superior Lithium Storage Properties, Chengling Zhu, Zhixin Chen, Shenmin Zhu, Yao Li, Hui Pan, Xin Meng, Muhammad Imtiaz, Di Zhang
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
Inspired by nature, herein we designed a novel construction of SnO2 anodes with an extremely high lithium storage performance. By utilizing small sheets of graphene oxide, the partitioned-pomegranate-like structure was constructed (SnO2@C@half-rGO), in which the porous clusters of SnO2 nanoparticles are partially supported by reduced graphene oxide sheets while the rest part is exposed (half-supported), like partitioned pomegranates. When served as anode for lithium-ion batteries, SnO2@C@half-rGO exhibited considerably high specific capacity (1034.5 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 100 mA g−1), superior rate performance and remarkable durability (370.3 mAh g−1 …

Analysis Of Hydrodynamic Mechanism On Particles Focusing In Micro-Channel Flows, Qikun Wang, Dan Yuan, Weihua Li
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
In this paper, the hydrodynamic mechanism of moving particles in laminar micro-channel flows was numerically investigated. A hydrodynamic criterion was proposed to determine whether particles in channel flows can form a focusing pattern or not. A simple formula was derived to demonstrate how the focusing position varies with Reynolds number and particle size. Based on this proposed criterion, a possible hydrodynamic mechanism was discussed as to why the particles would not be focused if their sizes were too small or the channel Reynolds number was too low. The Re-¿ curve (Re, ¿ respectively represents the channel-based Reynolds number and the …
