Radial consolidation testing of Ballina clay (New South Wales, Australia) was carried out using a large-scale consolidometer 650 mm in diameter. In this study, the characteristics of the smear zone were evaluated on the basis of hydraulic gradient changes derived from the measured excess pore pressure data in the radial direction. The extent of the smear zone determined using this technique is compared with past approaches, where the variations in water content and lateral permeability were adopted to evaluate smear. The light-emitting diode (LED) is the major source of nonlinearity in LED communications, and the nonlinearity needs to be effectively modeled and thereby mitigated through predistortion or postdistortion to avoid degradation of communication performance. A memory polynomial is often used for LED nonlinearity modeling and mitigation in the literature. However, the estimation of memory polynomial coefficients suffers from numerical instability, resulting in inaccurate modeling and poor performance in nonlinearity mitigation. Native trees grown along rail corridors increase the matric suction of the subgrade through the root water uptake associated with the evapo-transpiration by the tree canopy. This paper discusses the effects of an increase in the maximum allowable limestone content of general purpose (GP) cement from 7.5 up to 12%. The substitution of a higher content of clinker with limestone will allow for a lower embodied energy and emissions associated with the manufacture of GP cement. Fresh and hardened properties of normal-grade concrete (N20 and N32) prepared with GP cement containing limestone contents in the range of 5 to 12% were investigated. We consider the motion of convex surfaces with normal speed given by arbitrary strictly monotone, homogeneous degree one functions of the principal curvatures (with no further smoothness assumptions). We prove that such processes deform arbitrary uniformly convex initial surfaces to points in finite time, with spherical limiting shape. This result was known previously only for smooth speeds. The crucial new ingredient in the argument, used to prove convergence of the rescaled surfaces to a sphere without requiring smoothness of the speed, is a surprising hidden divergence form structure in the evolution of certain curvature quantities.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to implement health technology assessment (HA) in the First General City Hospital in Astana, Kazakhstan. Methods: We organized trainings to familiarize hospital staff with the purpose and details of HTA. An HTA committee was established, with representation from hospital physicians and managers, and criteria for prioritization of health technologies determined. Clinical departments of the hospital were asked to prepare applications for new technologies for their services. Large and frequent loads from heavy freight and passenger trains often lead to the progressive track deterioration. The excessive deformation and degradation of ballast and unacceptable differential settlement of track and/or pumping of underlying soft subgrade soils necessitates frequent and costly track maintenance. The modified overcoring method known as the Compact Conical ended Borehole Overcoring method (CCBO) for stress state determination in rock mass was designed in Institute of Geonics of the CAS (IGN) in cooperation with Kumamoto University in Japan. In this study, a series of monotonically drained triaxial tests were conducted using the large-scale cylindrical triaxial apparatus. The effect of particle breakage and confining pressure on the mechanical behaviour of ballast were investigated. Based on the experimental findings, mathematical expressions for critical state stress ratio and specific volume are proposed to incorporate the evolution of particle breakage during monotonic shearing. A large amount of filter cake wastes are produced from the gas cleaning systems of blast furnace (BF) ironmaking and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking processes. The evolution of microstructure and micro-texture during discontinuous dynamic recrystallisation of an austenitic Ni-30Fe-Nb-C model alloy subjected to interrupted plane strain compression at strains (ε) of 0.23, 0.35, 0.68, 0.85 and 1.2 was investigated using electron backscattering diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Throughout the strain range, the majority of dynamic recrystallisation events comprised nucleation in necklace-like arrangements located at and along grain boundaries via bulging. At ε ≥ 0.68, discrete nucleation events were also observed within grain interiors. Grain growth during dynamic recrystallisation is characteristic of strain induced boundary migration. The reduction of quartz was studied isothermally in a fluidized bed reactor using continuously flowing methane-hydrogen gas mixture in the temperature range from 1623 K to 1773 K (1350 °C to 1500 °C). The CO content in the off-gas was measured online using an infrared gas analyzer. The main phases of the reduced samples identified by XRD analysis were quartz and cristobalite. Significant weight loss in the reduction process indicated that the reduction products were SiO and CO. Silicon carbide powder was successfully transformed from hexagonal SiC into cubic SiC using the electric discharge assisted mechanical milling (EDAMM) method. The milling process was conducted in nitrogen plasma at atmospheric pressure. The effects of pulsed alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) discharge on product formation were investigated. Products were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and nanohardness. It was found that hexagonal SiC can be transformed into cubic SiC under EDAMM processing, near complete transformation occurring within 5 min when applying AC mode electrical pulses, and within 10 min when applying DC mode discharges.

Conventional transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel (0.17C-1.52Si-1.61Mn-0.03Al, wt%) was produced via strip casting technology simulated in the laboratory. Effects of holding temperature, holding time and cooling rate on ferrite formation were studied via analysis of the continuous cooling transformation diagram obtained here. A typical microstructure for conventional TRIP steels consisting of ~ 0.55 fraction of polygonal ferrite with bainite, retained austenite and martensite was obtained. In this paper, shear thickening fluids (STFs) and three different types of additive particles such as silicon carbide, aluminum oxide and boron carbide are presented. STFs were fabricated based on nanosize fumed silica suspended in a liquid medium, polyethylene glycol at a constant concentration of 20 wt%, and then varying amounts of different types of particle additives were added. Their rheological properties under various temperatures were tested using a rheometer, and the effects of silica loading on the rheology of pure STF were investigated. The suspensions exhibited different systematic variations with respect to the varied parameters.

An orthogonal experimental method was designed to assess the influence of the electrospinning processing parameters on average diameter and distribution of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) fibers. Based on the orthogonal experimental design analysis, electrospun TiO2-PMMA nanocomposites were processed with the optimal polymer processing conditions to obtain thin fibers with a high overall surface area. Further it was found that the average fiber diameter decreases from 2.0 ± 0.5 down to 1.2 ± 0.2 μm with increasing photocatalyst content. A recently modified Elasto-Plastic Self-Consistent (EPSC) model which empirically accounts for both intergranular and intragranular back stresses has been successfully used to simulate the cyclic (tension-compression) loading behaviour of an Fe-24Mn-3Al-2Si-1Ni-0.06C TWinning Induced Plasticity (TWIP) steel between strain limits of ±1%. Lattice strain measurements acquired via in-situ neutron diffraction were used to further validate the modelling results. An improved prediction of the pronounced Bauschinger effect during unloading is achieved when the reversibility of partial slip in the 〈112〉 direction is accounted for. Grain size and precipitations affect the strength and ductility of ultrafine-grained materials. In this study, aluminum alloy 6061 sheets were fabricated using the accumulative roll bonding (ARB) technique. The ARB-processed sheets were subsequently subjected to cryorolling and asymmetric cryorolling. The sheets were further aged at 100 °C for 48 h. Mechanical tests show that a combination of asymmetric cryorolling and ageing results in significant improvement in both the ductility and the strength of the ARB-processed sheets. Three polyimide membranes (polymer 0CN, copolymers 0CN/2CN (50/50) and polymer 2CN), with and without [Formula presented] dipolar groups, have been prepared by electrospinning and evaluated as lithium-ion battery separators. The prepared membranes show average fiber diameters between 0.5 and 1.09 μm and a degree of porosity of ~ 80%. The thermal stability, uptake, tortuosity and ionic conductivity values are influenced by the presence of the [Formula presented] dipolar groups in the polyimide polymer chain. The tribological tests of a ferritic stainless steel (FSS) 445 in contact with high-speed steel (HSS) were performed on a high-temperature pin-on-disc tribometer. Wear exhibited significant difference when the FSS 445 was oxidised with a Cr-rich oxide scale on the surface. The HSS pin displayed adhesive wear when there was no oxide scale on the stainless steel disc, and in the early stages, the coefficient of friction fluctuated significantly, but the level of wear changed as Cr2O3 particles formed. Using a sample of 98 galaxy clusters recently imaged in the near-infrared with the European Southern Observatory (ESO) New Technology Telescope, WIYN telescope and William Her- schel Telescope, supplemented with 33 clusters from the ESO archive, we measure how the stellar mass of the most massive galaxies in the universe, namely brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), increases with time. A new fibre-coupled self-mixing laser diode is developed for measurement of Young's modulus. Instead of transmission in free space, the light path is coupled in a fibre, which enables the measuring system easily and feasibly to be installed in many application cases. A specimen made of aluminium alloy 6061 is tested by the system designed. The obtained value of Young's modulus is 70.02 GPa with 0.16% measurement accuracy, showing a high repeatability and a good agreement with the standard values reported in literatures.
