Learning To 'Be' A University Student: First In Family Students Negotiating Membership Of The University Community, Olivia Groves, Sarah Elizabeth O'Shea

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

An integral part of the higher education (HE) journey is the act of 'becoming' a student, however students who are first in their families (FiF) to attend university have had limited exposure to the HE environment. Innovatively for research with this cohort, this paper draws on situated learning theory to examine how learning to become a university student occurs through participation within the university community of practice. Drawing upon in-depth interviews with FiF learners at the end of their degrees, i.e. successful students, the analysis describes students' movement from initial participation at the periphery of the university community to fuller …

Effects Of Steering Locomotion And Teleporting On Cybersickness And Presence In Hmd-Based Virtual Reality, Jeremy Clifton, Stephen Palmisano

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

While head-mounted display-based virtual reality (VR) can produce compelling feelings of presence (or "being there") in its users, it also often induces motion sickness. This study compared the presence, cybersickness and perceptions of self-motion (or "vection") induced when using two common methods of virtual locomotion: steering locomotion and teleporting. In four trials, conducted over two separate days, 25 participants repeatedly explored the "Red Fall" virtual environment in the game Nature Treks VR for 16 min at a time. Although steering locomotion was found to be more sickening on average than teleporting, 9 participants reported more severe sickness while teleporting. On …

The Uk Labour Party Wants To Abolish Private Schools - Could We Do That In Australia?, Paul Andrew Kidson Jan 2019

The Uk Labour Party Wants To Abolish Private Schools - Could We Do That In Australia?, Paul Andrew Kidson

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

The UK's Labour Party recently voted in a policy to effectively abolish private schools and integrate them into the state system. This is a courageous move designed to redress social inequity - many of those working in the top levels of the UK government were educated in private schools. Two of Britain's three most recent prime ministers went to the prestigious Eton College, which charges annual fees of more than £40,000. The UK opposition party's plan will likely warm the hearts of similarly minded Australians. Many of the same arguments about educational inequality have been floated in Australia. Many individuals …

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Globally, many schools are replacing traditional classrooms with innovative flexible learning spaces to improve academic outcomes. Little is known about the effect on classroom behaviour. Students from nine secondary schools (n = 60, M age = 13.2±1.0y) were observed via momentary time sampling for a 30 minute period, in both a traditionally furnished and arranged classroom and a flexible learning space containing a variety of furniture options to accommodate different pedagogical approaches and learning styles. The teaching approaches in both conditions were documented. In traditional classrooms the approach was predominantly teacher-led and in the flexible learning space it was student-centred. …

Our secondary objectives are to assess the effects of interventions on markers of children's cardiovascular health, quality of life, process evaluation and to identify any unintended adverse outcomes (e.g. injuries, distress).

Reflective Practice To Guide Teacher Learning: A Practitioner's Journey With Beginner Adult English Language Learners, Skye Playsted Jan 2019

Reflective Practice To Guide Teacher Learning: A Practitioner's Journey With Beginner Adult English Language Learners, Skye Playsted

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Reflective practice in TESOL is widely used in pre-service and in-service teacher education contexts and is regarded as beneficial for ongoing professional learning. While models of reflective language teaching vary, they all aim to improve classroom outcomes for teachers and students. A holistic approach to reflective practice includes teachers' beliefs, philosophies and the interaction of their teaching practices with moral and social issues outside the classroom as part of the self-reflective teaching process (Farrell, 2015; Larrivee, 2000). Reflecting on the teaching journey in this way can help teachers make sense of how individual beliefs about teaching interact with professional experiences, …

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

This paper addresses health messages that are carried home from school - a space where childhood obesity prevention measures are being transmitted to families, and mothers in particular. We consider what emotions are being produced for mothers and children in the enactment of current school health initiatives, especially those aimed at 'improving' family food practices. Our analysis draws on interviews with parents and primary-school-aged children (n = 50) in Australia collected as part of a project on children's role as health advocates in family contexts. Using Sara Ahmed's work on emotions and John Law's concept of 'collateral realities', we consider …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In China, one or several ultrathin soft coal sublayers are widely developed in the coal seam. Therefore, a method of using hydraulic flushing in soft sublayer to enhance the gas extraction in these particular coal seams is developed in this work. We first established a new fully coupled gas extraction model by combing gas diffusion, gas flow, and a permeability model that considers the effect of stress change and plastic failure. By adopting this model, the gas extraction enhancement mechanism and its main influence factors were studied using the numerical simulation method based on the engineering and geological background in …

Factors Affecting Energy Efficiency Investments - A Case Study Of Bhutan, Roshan Chhetri, Young-Ho Lee, Duane A. Robinson, Sumitra Pokhrel

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Energy efficiency is providing the same services consuming less energy. Less energy means less energy bill and less greenhouse emissions. Bhutan presents a unique scenario in promoting the use of energy efficiency equipment and investments. Bhutan enjoys availability of adequate low cost hydropower energy resource that is green and clean and enjoys cheap electrical energy. To aggravate the situation, the domestic tariffs are subsidized and even free up to 100 units in rural parts of the country. Export tariffs are determined independently according to entirely different principles. However for cooking, Bhutan imports LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) from India. With increasing …

Enhancing Goldreich, Goldwasser And Halevi's Scheme With Intersecting Lattices, Arnaud Sipasseuth, Thomas Plantard, Willy Susilo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

We present a technique to enhance the security of the Goldreich, Goldwasser and Halevi (GGH) scheme. The security of GGH has practically been broken by lattice reduction techniques. Those attacks are successful due to the structure of the basis used in the secret key. In this work, we aim to present a new technique to alleviate this problem by modifying the public key which hides the structure of the corresponding private key. We intersect the initial lattice with a random one while keeping the initial lattice as our secret key and use the corresponding result of the intersection as the …

This allows the damping and stiffness to be controlled independently by the internal damping and the external damping units, respectively. A test bench was established to verify the variable stiffness and damping functionality. The experimental results for variable damping test, variable stiffness test and co-working test are presented. At the amplitude of 10° and the frequency 0.5 Hz, increases of 141.6% and …

The Vulnerability Of Multiplicative Noise Protection To Correlation-Attacks On Continuous Microdata, Yue Ma, Yan-Xia Lin, Rathin Sarathy Jan 2019

The Vulnerability Of Multiplicative Noise Protection To Correlation-Attacks On Continuous Microdata, Yue Ma, Yan-Xia Lin, Rathin Sarathy

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

When multiplicative noises are used to protect values of a sensitive attribute in a microdata, it is frequently assumed that data intruders use the noise-multiplied value to estimate the corresponding unobservable original value of a target record. In this paper, we show that, data intruders could easily construct another estimate instead of using the noise-multiplied value to attack an original value. The new estimate, namely "correlation-attack" estimate, is obtained by exploiting the potentially high correlation between the noise-multiplied data and the original data. We provide a detailed comparison between the two estimates (noise-multiplied value and the correlation-attack estimate) by comparing …

A 7r Spatial Linkage For Ankle Rehabilitation With An Arbitrary Ankle Rotation Axis, Chih-Ching Hsieh, Chin-Hsing Kuo, Daisuke Matsuura, Yukio Takeda Jan 2019

A 7r Spatial Linkage For Ankle Rehabilitation With An Arbitrary Ankle Rotation Axis, Chih-Ching Hsieh, Chin-Hsing Kuo, Daisuke Matsuura, Yukio Takeda

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In this paper, a 7R spatial linkage for ankle rehabilitation was proposed. Thanks to its kinematic geometry, the output joint, which is accommodated by the patient's ankle, of the linkage can possess an arbitrary joint axis at any configuration. This advantage allows the patient achieving a flexible ankle motion in 3-D space while performing the rehabilitation exercise. The design concept of the 7R linkage is explained, and the displacement and force relationships between the input and output joints (i.e., the motor and patient's ankle) are analyzed through an equivalent RSSR linkage. A prototype is built to validate the proposed design …

Coupled Cfd-Dem Modelling Of Mine Dust Dispersion In Underground Roadway, Lihai Tan, Ting X. Ren

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Dust particles floating inside roadways are characterized by various sizes. However, it is difficult to replicate the dust environment with such factors taken into consideration in laboratory experiments. Fortunately, computational technology provides an alternative way for that. In this study, in order to investigate the movement mechanism of dust with different diameters from heading face in the underground roadway, a three-dimensional CFD-DEM coupling numerical model is presented using the Eulerian-Lagrangian method. A numerical roadway model based on a practical engineering case has been established for the purpose of studying the dust diffusion under single-forced ventilation condition in roadway underground. The …

Effect Of Temperature And Strain Rate On The Hot Deformation Behaviour Of Ferritic Stainless Steel, Guoqing Zu, Yukuan Lu, Yi Yan, Xiaoming Zhang, Jingwei Zhao, Wei Du, Xu Ran, Zhengyi Jiang Jan 2019

Effect Of Temperature And Strain Rate On The Hot Deformation Behaviour Of Ferritic Stainless Steel, Guoqing Zu, Yukuan Lu, Yi Yan, Xiaoming Zhang, Jingwei Zhao, Wei Du, Xu Ran, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The flow behaviour and microstructure characteristics of a ferritic stainless steel were investigated using plain strain compression test on a Gleeble 3500 thermo-mechanical test simulator with a hydrawedge system in the temperature range of 850-1100 °C and strain rate range of 0.1-50 s−1. The phenomenological constitutive model and the relationship between the Zener-Hollomon (Z) parameter and flow stress were established. The results reveal that the flow softening phenomenon occurs at high strain rate, which is caused by the coupling effect of the adiabatic heating and dynamic recrystallisation (DRX). New grains nucleate preferentially at the original grain boundaries by …

Effects Of Ni And Cr On Cryogenic Impact Toughness Of Bainite/Martensite Multiphase Steels, Zishan Yao, Guang Xu, Zhengyi Jiang, Junyu Tian, Qing Yuan, Hongwei Ma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In the present research, the effects of Nickel (Ni) and Chromium (Cr) on cryogenic impact toughness (CIT) of low-carbon bainite/martensite multiphase steels [processed by two different cooling processes: isothermal transformation process (ITP) and continuous cooling process (CCP)] were investigated. It was found that due to the formation of carbides during isothermal treatment, the addition of Ni and Cr yielded no significant improvements in CIT. However, during CCP treatment, the addition of Ni manifested a considerable enhancement in CIT, whereas the addition of both Ni and Cr caused a decrease in CIT. Further, after ITP treatment, the microstructure of all steels …

Experimental Investigation On The Mechanical And Tribological Coupled Behaviour Of Bimetal Composite Under Different States, Zhou Li, Jingwei Zhao, Hui Wu, Fanghui Jia, Ye Yao, Qingfeng Zhang, Sihai Jiao, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Wear resistance and excellent mechanical properties are the main requirements in industrial applications of bimetal composites. The interfacial evolution of duplex stainless steel/low carbon steel (2205/AH36) bimetal composite after annealing and its tribological behaviour in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution were investigated in this study. The bonding interface evolution between two layers plays a critical role in mechanical properties of composite, and the surface microstructure of stainless steel layer determines the wear and corrosion resistance. The hot-rolled composite samples were heat treated at temperatures ranging from 850 to 1150 °C in steps of 100 °C for 1 h. Optical microscopy …

Experimental Characterization Of Wildfire Sprinkler Sprays Using High-Speed Videography, Alan Green, Paul Cooper Jan 2019

Experimental Characterization Of Wildfire Sprinkler Sprays Using High-Speed Videography, Alan Green, Paul Cooper

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

External sprinkler systems are one of a relatively small number of measures that are frequently recommended for the protection of houses from wildfires. However, very little scientific work appears to have been undertaken to evaluate their effectiveness. Numerical simulation techniques such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) could be used to investigate spray performance in the conditions of a wildfire; however, detailed characteristics of the sprays typically implemented in wildfire sprinkler systems must first be known so that they can be accurately represented in such simulations. This paper presents the results of an in-depth experimental investigation into the spatiotemporal distributions of …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The use of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as strengthening materials for piles was found to be a promising scheme, due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, high durability and high anti-corrosion ability. This study presents an experimental investigation of a new form of composite piles: geogrid-confined pervious geopolymer concrete piles (GPGCPs) with fibre reinforced polymer (FRP)-polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-confined concrete core (FPCC). The GPGCP with FPCC consists of a circular geogrid outer tube, a FRP-PVC-confined normal geopolymer concrete core, and pervious geopolymer concrete (PGC) filled in between. The reason for applying PGC into piles is to increase the …

Authorized Equality Test On Identity-Based Ciphertexts For Secret Data Sharing Via Cloud Storage, Hongbo Li, Qiong Huang, Sha Ma, Jian Shen, Willy Susilo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

With the higher rate of using cloud storage, protecting data privacy becomes an important issue. The most effective solution is to encrypt data before uploading to the cloud. However, how to efficiently search over data encrypted with different keys is still an open problem. To address this problem, we introduce a new notion of the identity-based encryption with equality test supporting flexible authorization (IBEET-FA). It supports the test of whether two ciphertexts encrypted under the different keys encapsulate the same message, and in the meanwhile supports fine-grained authorization of the test. Based on the equality test on ciphertexts, there is …
