University enrolments have grown at an unprecedented rate over the last decade and this participation is only set to increase (Kemp & Norton, 2014; Universities Australia, 2015). However, rates of completion during the same period have remained relatively static, and the numbers of students who depart university remains significant, consistently hovering between 15-18 per cent of the total Australian student population (Higher Education Standards Panel, 2018). Disproportionate numbers of these early leavers are from rural and remote areas, so exploring how regional and remote learners consider their post-schooling futures can provide some insight into the fundamental issues behind this attrition. …

Ensuring student success has long been on the research agenda in higher education. In this study, we seek to understand if the changes students make in light of academic failure are consistent with this literature. Little is known about students who fail but subsequently persist in their studies. Through an online survey with students who had failed and persisted, we identified drivers for persistence and how students adapted in response to academic failure. Thematic analysis showed that the majority of students did not seek institutional support following academic failure but they did seek support from peers, family and friends. These …

Research suggests that physical activity can be used as an intervention to increase cognitive function. Yet, there are competing views on the cognitive effects of physical activity and it is not clear what level of consensus exists among researchers in the field. The purpose of this study was two-fold: Firstly, to quantify the scientific consensus by focusing on the relationship between physical activity and cognitive function. Secondly, to investigate if there is a gap between the public's and scientists' interpretations of scientific texts on this topic. A two-phase study was performed by including 75 scientists in the first phase and …

As Australians look forward to the summer beach season, the prospect of shark encounters may cross their minds. Shark control has been the subject of furious public debate in recent years and while some governments favour lethal methods, it is the wrong route. Our study, published today in People and Nature, presents further evidence that lethal shark hazard management damages marine life and does not keep people safe. We examined the world's longest-running lethal shark management program, the New South Wales Shark Meshing (Bather Protection) Program, introduced in 1937. We argue it is time to move on from shark nets …

Disparities in the technology practices, skills and knowledge of school students still exist, despite widespread investment, and use in schools. In order to understand why inequalities remain, we first need a more nuanced understanding of students' technology practice, including understanding how their backgrounds, circumstances and experiences shape their perceptions of and engagement with technology. This paper proposes that research in the field of educational technology would benefit from a sociological framing in order to highlight how and why students use technology at school and in their everyday lives. The paper reports on a qualitative embedded case study of 13-16‐year‐old students …

In adults, sleep selectively consolidates those memories that are relevant for future events. The present study tested whether napping after encoding plays a role in selective memory consolidation in infants. Infants aged 15 and 24 months (n = 48 per age) were randomly assigned to a nap or a no-nap demonstration condition, or a baseline control condition. In the demonstration conditions, infants observed an experimenter perform an irrelevant action followed by a relevant action to achieve a desirable outcome on four different toys. Infant imitation of irrelevant and relevant actions was coded at a test session that occurred after a …

Massive Landsliding In Narrabeen Sandstones In The Watagan Region, S G. Fityus, Phil Flentje, R Rigby

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The Narrabeen Group is a thick sequence of bedded Triassic sandstones which occupies the stratigraphic interval between the Permian coal measures and the Hawkesbury Sandstone in the Sydney Basin. In the northern Sydney Basin it is laterally extensive, extending throughout the southern Hunter Valley from the Central Coast to beyond the Great Divide. In the Watagans region, a unique situation arises where a disconformity causes the Narrabeen group to be underlain directly by Permian upper marine sediments. The result is a dramatic occurrence of ancient massive landsliding, leading to steep sandstone slopes that break to an elevated detrital plane, of …

Fringe Projection Profilometry For The 3d Shape Measurement Of Objects With Three-Dimensional Movements, Chengpu Duan, Yiwei Zhang, Jiangtao Xi, Jun Tong, Yanguang Yu, Qinghua Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

© 2019 SPIE. Phase shifting profilometry (PSP) is considered as an effective method for 3D shape measurement based on fringe projection. However, PSP is not suitable for dynamic measurement, as it requires that the object be kept still. Movement of the object during the cause of projection of multiple fringe patterns may lead to significant error in the measurement of the 3D shape. A number of approaches were proposed to combat this problem consisting of two steps: Capturing of the movement and then compensation (or correction) of fringe patterns. However, such compensation is only valid for the cases where the …

Improve 3d Shape Reconstruction With Dual-Camera Measurement Fusion, Yuewen Zhu, Qinghua Guo, Jiangtao Xi, Yanguang Yu, Jun Tong

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

© 2019 SPIE. In this work, we consider the problem of 3D shape reconstruction with a system with two cameras and one projector, which can be regarded as a composite system with two fringe projection profilometry (FPP) systems and one stereo vision (SV) system. Different from the active SV systems in the literature where FPP is used to assist SV to address the issue of corresponding matching, a new system is proposed in this paper by constructing a fusion cost function with the consideration of both FPP and SV triangulations, so that the measurements of the two cameras can be …

Review Of Coal And Gas Outburst In Australian Underground Coal Mines, Dennis J. Black Jan 2019

Review Of Coal And Gas Outburst In Australian Underground Coal Mines, Dennis J. Black

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Outburst of coal and gas represents a significant risk to the health and safety of mine personnel working in development and longwall production face areas. There have been over 878 outburst events recorded in twenty-two Australian underground coal mines. Most outburst incidents have been associated with abnormal geological conditions. Details of Australian outburst incidents and mining experience in conditions where gas content was above current threshold levels are presented and discussed. Mining experience suggests that for gas content below 9.0 m 3 /t, mining in carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) rich seam gas conditions does not pose a greater risk …

Derivative-Based Acceleration Of General Vector Machine, Binbin Yong, Fucun Li, Qingquan Lv, Jun Shen, Qingguo Zhou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

General vector machine (GVM) is one of supervised learning machine, which is based on three-layer neural network. It is capable of constructing a learning model with limited amount of data. Generally, it employs Monte Carlo algorithm (MC) to adjust weights of the underlying network. However, GVM is time-consuming at training and is not efficient when compared with other learning algorithm based on gradient descent learning. In this paper, we present a derivative-based Monte Carlo algorithm (DMC) to accelerate the training of GVM. Our experimental results indicate that DMC algorithm is faster than the original MC method. Specifically, the training time …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

As a common disease, hypertension (HTN) can lead to severe complications such as heart failure, renal failure and stroke. However, delayed diagnosis often happens because of no obvious symptoms in earlier stage. This paper addresses the issue through a novel cloud based auxiliary medical system for HTN. Nowadays, telemedicine has been used to diagnose and monitor HTN by sharing and consulting personal health status with doctors. Its high flexibility and processing ability have helped to reduce the overall cost of medical care and enhanced the control rate. Technically, telemedicine uses communication, holographic imaging and computer science to achieve the management …

Not all micropollutants detected in the water phase were identified in the …

Estimating Spatial Changes Over Time Of Arctic Sea Ice Using Hidden 2x2 Tables, Bohai Zhang, Noel A. Cressie Jan 2019

Estimating Spatial Changes Over Time Of Arctic Sea Ice Using Hidden 2x2 Tables, Bohai Zhang, Noel A. Cressie

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Arctic sea ice extent has been of considerable interest to scientists in recent years, mainly due to its decreasing temporal trend over the past 20 years. In this article, we propose a hierarchical spatio-temporal generalized linear model for binary Arctic sea-ice-extent data, where statistical dependencies in the data are modeled through a latent spatio-temporal linear mixed effects model. By using a fixed number of spatial basis functions, the resulting model achieves both dimension reduction and non-stationarity for spatial fields at different time points. An EM algorithm is proposed to estimate model parameters, and an empirical-hierarchical-modeling approach is applied to obtain …

Influence Of Molecular Structure On Lubrication Of Aqueous Triblock Copolymer Lubricants Between Rutile Surfaces: An Md Approach, Thi D. Ta, Anh Kiet Tieu, Hongtao Zhu, Shanhong Wan, Hoang The Phan, Jingcheng Hao

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The influence of molecular structure on adsorption and lubrication of aqueous triblock copolymer on TiO2surfaces has been investigated using a realistic MD model. Reference data obtained from DFT calculations have been employed to develop an interaction potential between the copolymer and TiO2surface. The results show that R Pluronics form an anchor-buoy-anchor structure absorbed on TiO2surface and L Pluronic for buoy-anchor-buoy structure. The shear of tribo-system influences slightly on the orientation of copolymers and non-slip behavior has been observed at solid-fluid interfaces due to the strong adhesion strength of copolymer on rutile surface. The shear viscosity increases with copolymer concentration and …

Numerical Analysis Of Axially Loaded Rectangular Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Short Columns At Elevated Temperatures, Ghanim Mohammed Kamil, Qing Quan Liang, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Elevated temperatures significantly reduce the local buckling strengths of steel tubes and the ultimate strengths of rectangular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns exposed to fire. No fiber-based models have been developed that include local buckling effects on the fire-resistance of rectangular CFST columns. This paper presents a new fiber element model for the fire-resistance predictions of axially loaded rectangular CFST short columns at elevated temperatures considering local buckling. The thermal analysis problem of a CFST column is solved by the finite difference method to determine the temperature distribution within its cross-section including an air gap, concrete moisture content and the …

Minimal Hypersurfaces In The Ball With Free Boundary, Glen Wheeler, V.-M Wheeler Jan 2019

Minimal Hypersurfaces In The Ball With Free Boundary, Glen Wheeler, V.-M Wheeler

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In this note we use the strong maximum principle and integral estimates prove two results on minimal hypersurfaces F:Mn→Rn+1 with free boundary on the standard unit sphere. First we show that if F is graphical with respect to any Killing field, then F(Mn) is a flat disk. This result is independent of the topology or number or boundaries. Second, if Mn=Dn is a disk, we show the supremum of the curvature squared on the interior is bounded below by n times the infimum of the curvature on the boundary. These may be combined the give an impression of the curvature …

On Tetragonality Of The Martensite Crystal Lattice In Steels, V Lobodyuk, Yu Ya Meshkov, Elena V. Pereloma Jan 2019

On Tetragonality Of The Martensite Crystal Lattice In Steels, V Lobodyuk, Yu Ya Meshkov, Elena V. Pereloma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

This article addresses the pseudo-tetragonal nature of the crystal lattice of martensite in carbon-containing steels. It is proposed that the periodic distortion of c-cube edges by the presence of carbon atoms is better reflected in the root-mean-square distortions of martensite lattice than by the value of doublet splitting of the corresponding X-ray reflections of the martensite crystal.

A Robust Registration Method For Autonomous Driving Pose Estimation In Urban Dynamic Environment Using Lidar, Rendong Wang, Youchun Xu, Miguel Sotelo, Yulin Ma, T Sarkodie-Gyan, Zhixiong Li, Weihua Li Jan 2019

A Robust Registration Method For Autonomous Driving Pose Estimation In Urban Dynamic Environment Using Lidar, Rendong Wang, Youchun Xu, Miguel Sotelo, Yulin Ma, T Sarkodie-Gyan, Zhixiong Li, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The registration of point clouds in urban environments faces problems such as dynamic vehicles and pedestrians, changeable road environments, and GPS inaccuracies. The state-of-the-art methodologies have usually combined the dynamic object tracking and/or static feature extraction data into a point cloud towards the solution of these problems. However, there is the occurrence of minor initial position errors due to these methodologies. In this paper, the authors propose a fast and robust registration method that exhibits no need for the detection of any dynamic and/or static objects. This proposed methodology may be able to adapt to higher initial errors. The initial …
