College Level Career Counseling, Ain Roost

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was designed to examine and evaluate vocational decision making and counseling at Utah State University and to provide a basis for further research. A written questionnaire was given to a random sample of 500 college students on the Utah State University campus.

It was found that over 15% of freshmen could not express a vocational choice, and of those who could, their commitment to it was weaker than the other classes. Immediate family, friends and college professors were the most influential people in making a career choice, with the influence of college counselors being almost negligible. Other than influential …

The Comparative Effects Of Two Reinforcement Schedules Applied To Groups In Teaching Arithmetic Skills, Ronald C. Bennett May 1972

The Comparative Effects Of Two Reinforcement Schedules Applied To Groups In Teaching Arithmetic Skills, Ronald C. Bennett

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A behavioral approach to teaching in the public school system is difficult because of the inherent difficulty of finding positive reinforcers and administering them simultaneously to large groups of students.

This study attempts to apply the same tangible reinforcers to two groups of students under different schedules of reinforcement. The students in the study were in special classes termed "learning adjustment" classes because of their failure to perform at grade level in regular classroom settings.

One group was on a continuous schedule of reinforcement using tokens and gold strike stamps as reinforcers. The second group was also on a continuous …

Its Reevaluation And Improvement As Related To A Profile Analysis Classification System, Mark A. Skovron

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Over the first half of the present study the Mini-Mult (MM1), a brief form of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), was compared with the standard MMPI in relation to eleven criteria classifications. These criteria were composed of the profile analysis classifications of Marks and Seeman (1963). Pearson product-moment correlations between the MM1 and MMPI failed to reach statistical significance for any of the eleven criteria.

As based on the information gained, a correction factor was devised and added to the MM1. Subsequently, the second half of the study involved a comparison between the HMPI …

Values And Schooling, Perspectives For School People And Parents, James P. Shaver Apr 1972

Values And Schooling, Perspectives For School People And Parents, James P. Shaver

Faculty Honor Lectures

One of the most perplexing issues facing school people is posed by the question, "What should the school's role be in regard to students' values?" Some version of that question may even on occasion provoke concern among parents. When they do become involved in related disputes over what the .school should be doing - usually as part of an aroused minority reacting to a new element in the school program - parents are .likely to make such declarations as, "The school has no business messing with the values of our children!" Individually, they are likely to think, but not say …

Aldo Leopold's "Land Ethic": An Ecological Extension Of Albert Schweitzer's "Reverence For Life", John Lee Weaver

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

As a member of the world community, and in the process of becoming a professional ecologist, I have begun a search for a personal ecological ethic to guide my actions. Two of the paths I have taken in my search are Albert Schweitzer's Reverence for Life ethic and Aldo Leopold's Land Ethic. They are relevant because each has extended the scope of ethics beyond Homo Sapiens. Their thoughts, with similarities and dissimilarities, form herein my travels.

Transfer Of Fr Response Rate Bias To Fi Trained Guinea Pigs By Injection Of Brain Homogenate, Lief Carlsen Jan 1972

Transfer Of Fr Response Rate Bias To Fi Trained Guinea Pigs By Injection Of Brain Homogenate, Lief Carlsen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In an attempt to delineate the physiological and/or chemical nature of the memory process, some researchers have reported that by introducing all or part of the brain of a trained animal into the bloodstream of another animal, the recipient thereby "acquires a tendency" to respond as the donor was trained. However, almost as many researchers have failed to obtain significant results.

Because many of the early experiments had less than optimum designs, their results were often equivocal. Critics frequently pointed out that perhaps increased learning efficiency was due merely to a sensitizing or stimulating effect of the injection and not …

The Electoral College In The American Nation, Boyd J. Jentzsch Jan 1972

The Electoral College In The American Nation, Boyd J. Jentzsch

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Democracy in America is often guided by the visible forces of the moment. Dangers are too often seen in the context of political interest--when fire is seen, the hoses of democratic action come wheeling out. But there is no excitement in smoke alone. The near constitutional crisis of the 1968 Presidential elections, (when the strong third party candidacy of George Wallace threatened to throw the election into the House of Representatives), caused a lot of smoke and a spark of flame. The alarm was sounded and the volunteer firemen from the halls of Congress and Capitol Hill responded. The standers-by, …

The Changing Role Of The Secondary Counselor In Career Guidance, Norman D. Devries May 1971

The Changing Role Of The Secondary Counselor In Career Guidance, Norman D. Devries

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Work can be viewed as man's aim in life, or as his instrument to achieve other goals. Whatever the view, it is wrong to allow the vagueness and error that many individuals frequently face when choosing a career. If we are going to meet this demand, it will be necessary to make vocational guidance available to all those who are making or will make a vocation choice.

Effects Of Reorganization On The Clientele Of The Division Of Family Services In Northern Utah, Byron R. Burnham May 1971

Effects Of Reorganization On The Clientele Of The Division Of Family Services In Northern Utah, Byron R. Burnham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Division of Family Services in the State of Utah has undergone an organizational change. State aid to needy families is now administered on a regional level, rather than a county level.

It was hypothesized that this reorganization would have little affect on the clients attitude toward state services. They would be aware of the change but would be neutral in attitude about the change.

Survey research was used to obtain data for this study. A change scale was developed and a score computed. After reviewing the data the hypothesis was rejected. Clients did have a positive view about regionalization …

Linear Programming As A Decision Tool In Cheese Manufacturing Plants, Mark S. Huber May 1971

Linear Programming As A Decision Tool In Cheese Manufacturing Plants, Mark S. Huber

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis considered the potential benefits of employing linear programming in cheese manufacturing plants as a decision tool for management. Its potential has been enhanced by the recent approval of acid orange 12 as a chemical for testing the percent protein in milk; therefore, a practical test is now available for monitoring protein as well as milk fat in milk manufacturing and fluid milk plants.

Seven models, each one differing only in the milk fat and protein percentages or means of standardizing the cheese milk, were manipulated individually and simultaneously to test the managerial benefits of linear programming under various …

The Impact Of Selected Changes In Management Of Public Lands On Functional Demand Areas In Utah, Eldon W. Dixon May 1971

The Impact Of Selected Changes In Management Of Public Lands On Functional Demand Areas In Utah, Eldon W. Dixon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Income and employment impacts associated with changing federal grazing policy were evaluated within functional demand areas.

Changes in federal land policy do have employment and income effects on the functional demand areas. But whether they are significant or not is open to debate. The percentage of total employment lost for each functional demand area ranged from. 0159 percent for Region 2 to 4. 031 percent for Region 7. This was the maximum employment loss or gain to the demand areas. All other gains and losses in employment within functional demand areas were between this maximum and minimum. Income changes followed …

The Development Of A Vocational Interest Inventory Using "Worker-Oriented" Job Elements, Alma F. Harris

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to develop a vocational interest inventory, using the "worker-oriented" job elements of Dr. Ernest J. McCormick and his associates, and to assess the reliability of the resulting instrument.

The interest inventory was prepared, based on 191 of the questions from the Position Analysis Questionnaire, and the test-retest reliability was calculated for a sample of 71 high school students, over a three-week period.

The mean correlation coefficient for the five over-all "job dimension" scores of the interest inventory was .80, and the average item reliability was .54. These coefficients were considered high enough to justify …

N-Achievement Motivation Of Male Navaho Indian Students As Measured By An Acculturated N-Achievement Scale, Rex C. Ivory May 1971

N-Achievement Motivation Of Male Navaho Indian Students As Measured By An Acculturated N-Achievement Scale, Rex C. Ivory

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The problem which formed the basis of this research was to answer the question: "Can an acculturated version of McClelland's original n-Achievement scale be significantly more effective in measuring n-Achievement motivation of male Navaho Indian subjects than McClelland's original n-Achievement scale?" An answer to this question would hopefully be reason enough for using an acculturated n-Achievement scale to provide new information relative to the Navaho Indian's need to achieve.

The major underlying objective of this study was to develop a more effective projective scale than McClelland in measuring a Navaho Indian's n-Achievement motivation. This objective was not reached; however, the …
