Courses For Managerial Training As Recommended By Managers Of Selected Utah Industries, B. Edward Lepper

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The United States is a growing nation; it is also an industrial nation. In the past century the spinning wheel has given way to the large clothing mills; a great network of miles and miles of electric power lines has replaced the kerosene lamp and provided power for work that was for years done by hand. Small horse-drawn earth moving equipment has given way to giant motor-driven bulldozers and transportation has progressed from the pony express and stagecoach to the huge trans-ocean airliners that make any spot on the globe only a matter of hours away. In like manner colleges …

Vending And Dispensing Milk And Related Products In The State Of Utah, Douglas S. Huber

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The present era in the United States finds the people leaning more and more toward automation. The use of automatic machines in merchandising products is becoming increasingly important in meeting competition and in developing new outlets for dairy products.

A knowledge of the methods and special characteristics associated with vending and dispensing is important if the dairy industry is to increase sales and develop a greater market for dairy products.

Some Economic Fallacies And The Citizen, Evan B. Murray Apr 1957

Some Economic Fallacies And The Citizen, Evan B. Murray

Faculty Honor Lectures

To raise the question of economics under any title is at best to be accused of preaching to the converted, and at worst accused of preaching what every member of the congregation understands much better than the preacher. Since economics is a discussion of what people do day after day as they go about making a living, who doesn't understand all about it? Practically all adults do some kind of work, they get money, they spend money, they save, they borrow, they produce things, they sell things, they put money in the bank and draw money from the bank. They …

Land Fragmentation And Water Utilization In Relation To Their Social Milieu, Paragonah, Utah, Robert G. Painter

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Practices of land use in Utah show need for community action aimed at more adequate utilization of land and water resources. Use of land for crop production in Utah is limited by topography, soil type, elevation, climate, and moisture (26, p.3). Because of limitations imposed, only a small portion of the land area may be used for cultivated farming. As a rule, large land holdings in Utah are not regularly tilled but are used as range for raising livestock.

Farm cropland may be separated into two general classes: irrigated and dry-land. In general, the cropland of most farms is entirely …

This is an attempt to make such a study in regard to religious groups.

An Economic Analysis Of Merchandising Fluid Milk In Utah, E. Boyd Wennergren

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During recent years the industry has witnessed a general decrease in per capita consumption of dairy products while per capita production has remained fairly constant and in amounts approximating the average for the past 16 years (Table 2 ). As a result the dairy industry has produced a surplus of fluid milk and manufactured dairy products. The Federal Government, under its price support program, has been the ultimate recipient of these surpluses and now possesses huge warehouse stocks. The cost to the Federal …

The people of Utah saw the first federal military installation established in the area almost a century ago. As the troops approached the Territory, every available means was used to resist their advance. Trenches and other defenses were prepared and all forage burned on the routes to the Valley to hamper or prevent their approach (17, p.303). When the troops arrived in 1858 they were permitted to enter the territory of Utah without further …

Obligations Of Higher Education To The Social Order, Ernest A. Jacobsen Apr 1955

Obligations Of Higher Education To The Social Order, Ernest A. Jacobsen

Faculty Honor Lectures

Search for truth is not limited to the discovery of facts. If wisdom is to result from such discovery, there must be parallel study in the realm of values. Lack of balance in these two aspects of research has tended to result in an enormous mass of information and in a marvelous productive power in our society with a lack of worthy ends toward which to direct and apply them. Wisdom is the product of information and values skillfully integrated.

When values are involved the principal data become the ideas and ideals of man. These must be extensively gathered, classified, …

The European Defense Community, Robert H. Alfandary May 1954

The European Defense Community, Robert H. Alfandary

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In 1945 it was a common belief that World War II had just been fought to successful completion. The German and Japanese Empires were vanquished, with Germany destroyed more thoroughly than any of the countries she had occupied. The two large remaining powers, the United States and the Soviet Union, seemed to be working together for the common good of the whole world. They had even agreed to participate in the United Nations Organization, which, as a matter of fact, they had been prominently associated with since the earliest negotiations. Now universal peace, and maybe the Millennium, would be the …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Broiler production in the United States and in Utah has become increasingly important in the last few years. Growth has been especially rapid since 1934, when separate statistics on broiler production became available. In 1951, production was about 6 times that of 1940 and for the first time the number of broilers raised exceeded the number of chickens raised from farm production.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Man is a social animal. Without participating in social activities and enjoying the social privileges, man cannot live but physically. He has something in common with the rest of the human race and a particular interest in his own community which imposes on and shares with him the same cultural pattern. The different cultures have a universal cultural pattern common to mankind, (32, p. 129), but in the same time there are many traits which prohibit the different groups from understanding each other, not because of languages, but because of the existence of the cultural barriers. To cross the barriers …

Peas are a satisfactory nurse crop for small-seeded legumes such …

The Relation Between Group Participation And Personality Adjustment Of High School Students In Piute And Kane Counties, Utah, John R. Christiansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The emergence of modern concepts of personality and the study of processes involved in personality formation are relatively recent developments (14, p. 83). From these concepts and studies of personality has developed the theory that personality emerges out of the contact the individual has with his society and his culture. This theory does not discredit the importance of biological or hereditary background as an important condition or prerequisite for personality development, but it does hold that the social and cultural forces provide the stimulus and arranges the general patterns for personality formation.

The social and cultural forces operate in close …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The family is the basic institution of society. It is within the family that the individual develops his basic points of view and achieves a pattern of adjustment toward life.1

One of the most strategic factors in the family setting, insofar as personality development is concerned, is the parental-child relationship. Although it is evident that this relationship plays a great part in the socialization of the child, much remains to be understood concerning the underlying conditions within the family that affect his relationship.

It is the view of this study that the parent-child relationship varies in nature from family …
