Past Trends Of Cooperative Marketing And Its Present Economic Status In Utah, Lamoine B. Christiansen
Past Trends Of Cooperative Marketing And Its Present Economic Status In Utah, Lamoine B. Christiansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The agricultural interests of the United States and Utah have experienced some trying situations during the past quarter century. Periods of depression followed by periods of expansion and prosperity have resulted in a condition of instability and insecurity in agriculture.
The effect of alternate periods of prosperity and depression in agriculture becomes increasingly important as agriculture changes from self-sufficing to commercialized types of business enterprises. Many of the difficulties inherent in the present complex social and capital structure were of minor significances in the early types of agricultural activities.
Changing conditions in agriculture and in social institutions in general have …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Northwestern Shoshone Indians is the tribe of Indians that inhabited the territory north of the Great Salt Lake comprising the northern part of Utah and the Southern part of Idaho. The Indians have loose boundary lines, yet we can definitely state that this tribe occupied the territory from the Weber river on the South to the Snake river on the North; from Bear Lake and Bear river on the East to Raft river and Goose creek on the West. Their confines would take in Weber, Rich, Box Elder, Cache, and part of Morgan, counties in Utah; and Bear Lake, …

Especially during the last century the health of school children has been a problem of deep concern. Many physical examinations have been given by numerous organizations with the intention of discovering organic disorders that might be detrimental to a child's normal social life. As a result of such study, humanity has generally come to recognize the social and economic costs of ill-health and has embarked on remedial and preventive campaigns to improve the well-being of children. Foundations have been endowed. Free clinics have been established to serve those families whose incomes prohibit them from securing medical services otherwise; county, city …

Preferences Of A Group Of Nursery School Children At The Utah State Agricultural College For Colored Or Uncolored Picture Books, Verna S. Carlisle
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the last decade there has been manifest widespread interest in the development of children. Clinics, social agencies, and schools have made substantial contributions to our knowledge concerning children, their care, training, and growth. This is especially true of the pre-school child. Many studies have been made concerning his learning behavior, factors affecting his eating habits, his emotions, metor skills, intellectual development, and social behavior.

Riding the crest of the torrent of verbal altruism which flooded in the New Deal came a malnurtured little fellow, the consumer - the same timid, mistreated, gullible little fellow with the battered derby hat whom cartoonists have so aptly pictured on the stool peering meekly over the counter at the big bruiser, the producer, who stood behind it. Put now he was to be such rejuvenated personage. The hair shirt in which one writer has so smartly dressed him was to be miraculously transformed into finest armor of an impregnable protective alloy which was to be composed of numerous …

Today the under-privileged are by no means confined to the mentally and physically handicapped. Since 1929 the number has greatly increased because of our faulty economic and social organization. Many healthy men who are both able and willing to work have been forced into idleness because of inability to secure a position. Extension classes in "Mental Hygiene" and "Social Case Work" conducted under the direction of the head of the Sociology Department of the Utah State Agricultural College during 1934-35, decided to make a study of conditions actually existing among Ogden City's victims of the depression, with particular emphasis on …

A Study Of Certain Economic Factors Involved In The Organization And Management Of Poultry Farms In Utah, Robert L. Wrigley Jr.
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the organization and management of poultry farming many problems arise which call for a solution. Among such problems are the following: The amount of floor space per hen which will prove the most economical, the value of electric lights in poultry houses, amount of labor which can be profitably invested in a poultry flock, and the amount of feed which can be economically fed to poultry.
There are many influences which determine poultry profits that cannot be controlled directly, but the factors mentioned here are largely within the control of the poultryman. He should, therefore, direct them as far …

Life is a ceaseless struggle for existence. It enters every aspect of life and culture and in the long run the more fit tend toward the high places and the less fit are sifted and shaken to the low places. This struggle goes on in our physical environment, the less able take poor homes and the poor sections to live. In employment the …

A Study Of The Rural Home On The Small Income In Utah, Thelma Huber
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It was early in the life of primitive man that he felt the need of a home to protect and shelter his family. This home, if he lived in the tropics, was a tree house or if he happened to be a mountaineer, a cave. In either case it consisted of one room only, where all the activities of the family group took place.
From this very primitive home we have a gradual evolution taking place until we have some of the convenient, well planned homes of today. They not only afford protection and shelter, but it is here that …

The question is often asked, does the production of silver fox fur pay? Being a new industry in this part of the country (1924 was probably the beginning) not much is known concerning the facts of the business by the average person. In the following pages an economic discussion of the factors of this industry will be given. To begin with a short history of the fur industry and fur farming is given, to give perspective and background, as it is only through the history of the past that we are able to judge the future.
Municipal Lighting Of Logan City, Maya M. Fonnesbeck
Municipal Lighting Of Logan City, Maya M. Fonnesbeck
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Municipal lighting in Logan City is a contemporary development of municipal lighting in other American cities, because it has involved public opinion and lawsuits and competition between a private corporation and a municipality owning and operating an electric light plant. It is perhaps one of the most eventful and serious conflicts between owners of a public utility which has come before public and legal observation in the State of Utah. The case of Logan City vs. Utah Power & Light Company was brought before the Utah State Utilities Commission and the Utah State Supreme Court and the Court decided that …
A Study Of The Financial Considerations, Offered Teachers Of Utah, As Inducement For Professional Growth With Comparisons Drawn From Some Other States, Alvin Hess
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Much has been written on the subject of supervision and the improvement of teaching. It is the general opinion of authors on this subject that it is a much better procedure to retain the services of competent teachers over long tenure than to follow any of the uneconomical plans of adapting large numbers of new teachers to the task of establishing the necessary teacher-pupil contacts for successful learning. But, of course, these authors do not suggest long tenure without active improvement of teachers while in service. Tenure laws are of such importance in some states as to take the form …

A Study Of The Economic Relationship Of The International Smelter To Agriculture In Tooele Valley, Harvey A. Kirk
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Utah's position among the great commonwealths depends to some extent upon the degree of development of the agricultural industry of the State. But as a producer of wealth, the mining industry exceeds agriculture. The total annual value of Utah farm products is about $39,000,000 while the total output from the mines is valued at $82,663,000. The operation of the mines, reduction mills, and smelters necessitate the employment of a large number of people who swell the population of the State, and consume a large part of the agricultural products. Utah, which is an inland State, possessing, as yet, few large …
