The Impact Of Changing Narratives On American Public Opinion Toward The U.S.-Israel Relationship, Rana Kamal Odeh

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This study assesses the impact of changing narratives on public opinion toward the Palestine-Israel conflict. In contrast to other U.S.-Israel relations studies, but in accordance with some media influence and public opinion research, this study emphasizes the potential role of American public opinion in shaping U.S.-Israel relations. Furthermore, this study attempts to attribute the pro-Israel American attitude shown in Gallup polls to the lack of information about the Palestine-Israel conflict in American mainstream media. This study tests whether public opinion will shift after being exposed to different narratives that falls under one of three major perceptions reported in the current …

Using Differential Functioning Of Items And Tests (Dfit) To Examine Targeted Differential Item Functioning, Erin L. O'Brien Jan 2014

Using Differential Functioning Of Items And Tests (Dfit) To Examine Targeted Differential Item Functioning, Erin L. O'Brien

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Current studies of differential item functioning (DIF) look at look at how groups differ in responding to items across an entire trait continuum. This is important for detecting the presence of consistent patterns of responses across items between groups of people. Current tests of DIF are limited in that they only detect differences between groups across all levels of the trait. However, selection decisions are usually made within specific ranges of trait levels. The purpose of this research was to determine if restricting theta values in an existing framework would be better at detecting DIF as current methods for restricted …

A Preliminary Perspective For Identifying Resilience And Promoting Growth Among Survivors Of Sex Trafficking, Michelle Sobon Jan 2014

A Preliminary Perspective For Identifying Resilience And Promoting Growth Among Survivors Of Sex Trafficking, Michelle Sobon

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This work offers an analysis of the existing literature on trauma, resilience, posttraumatic growth, and sex trafficking. It argues that the field tends to gravitate toward trauma and overlook resilience and the potential for posttraumatic growth amongst survivors of sex trafficking. This work recommends that the field should attend to both abuses endured as well as the courage and strength gained by survivors. Specifically, it argues that it is the task of the mental health professional to step into trauma trajectories with a strengths-based perspective to promote positive, resilient, and growth-oriented outcomes. Resilience and posttraumatic growth theories have been substantiated …

The International Classification of Diseases, Sixth Edition (ICD-6; World Health Organization, 1949) is a universal health care management tool for examining the pathology of diseases and how to properly diagnose and treat said diseases. The birth of the first edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-I; American Psychiatric Association, 1952) is the product of the ICD and the American Medico-psychological Association and first delivered shortly after the end of the Second World War. As per request of the American Armed Forces, which were ill-equipped to manage the surge of mental disorders after the war, the need …

Alternative Indices Of Performance: An Exploration Of Eye Gaze Metrics In A Visual Puzzle Task, Sheldon M. Russell Jan 2014

Alternative Indices Of Performance: An Exploration Of Eye Gaze Metrics In A Visual Puzzle Task, Sheldon M. Russell

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Of interest to the U.S. Air Force is the ability to develop and characterize the level of workload that operators are under at any given point. When an operator's cognitive resources exceed demands, a 'red line' of performance may be crossed after which performance breaks down. What is needed is an estimate of operator state; a 'dipstick' for the operator in order to assess the level of 'resources' available, in order to avoid performance problems. Traditional approaches use secondary tasks (e.g., mental arithmetic) or secondary physiological measures (e.g., heart rate variability) for state assessment. However, the current work was motivated …

Fear Of Discrimination And Leveraging Of Leadership Experience In Individuals Of Lgbtq Organizations, Megan Brianne Morris Jan 2014

Fear Of Discrimination And Leveraging Of Leadership Experience In Individuals Of Lgbtq Organizations, Megan Brianne Morris

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Awareness of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community has exposed these individuals to unequal treatment in the workplace. One area where this mistreatment occurs is in the job application process. As a result, it is important to examine the job seeking behaviors of the LGBTQ community that are associated with this process. Student leaders of LGBTQ-focused groups face a unique challenge in the application process in regard to whether they should include their leadership experience on their resume, possibly exposing themselves to discrimination and bias. Only one study, to current knowledge, has focused on resume construction behavior …

Cued Visual Search And Multisensory Enhancement, Jordan Haggit Jan 2014

Cued Visual Search And Multisensory Enhancement, Jordan Haggit

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has been divided on whether or not multisensory cues can speed visual search relative to their component unisensory cues alone. Some studies (e.g., Mateo et al., 2012) found reaction times for multisensory cues were not faster than the RT of the faster component unisensory cue alone. Other studies (e.g., Oskarsson et al., 2012) found the multisensory cue to be faster than either unisensory cue alone (i.e., multisensory enhancement). This study aimed to determine whether the relative effectiveness match between auditory and tactile cues affects multisensory enhancement on a visual search task. In Experiment 1 we estimated for each …

Beyond Perceptual Expertise: Revisiting The Neural Substrates Of Expert Object Recognition, Assaf Harel, Dwight J. Kravitz, Chris I. Baker Dec 2013

Beyond Perceptual Expertise: Revisiting The Neural Substrates Of Expert Object Recognition, Assaf Harel, Dwight J. Kravitz, Chris I. Baker

Psychology Faculty Publications

Real-world expertise provides a valuable opportunity to understand how experience shapes human behavior and neural function. In the visual domain, the study of expert object recognition, such as in car enthusiasts or bird watchers, has produced a large, growing, and often-controversial literature. Here, we synthesize this literature, focusing primarily on results from functional brain imaging, and propose an interactive framework that incorporates the impact of high-level factors, such as attention and conceptual knowledge, in supporting expertise. This framework contrasts with the perceptual view of object expertise that has concentrated largely on stimulus-driven processing in visual cortex. One prominent version of …

Milton H. Erickson’s use of words in hypnosis (and psychotherapy) has been characterized as “the precise use of vague language.” In recent times as part of the medical model’s influence on psychotherapy there has been a movement towards specific (presumably effective) protocols for a client’s presenting concerns that can be codified in a diagnosis, preferably one in the DSM-IV.

Anyone interested in buying, selling, or creating ebooks has probably needed a fact, figure, or statistic to help make a decision, make a point, or make a purchase. Big Data, surveys, trends, market research, patron attitudes, cost analysis, and a host of other information points are available; you just need to know where to find them. In this column I highlight a variety of tools for librarians, publishers, and other information industry professionals for locating that perfect number.

The list is certainly not exhaustive as there are so many resources available. The list includes my personal favorites, ones that I …

Automatic Domain Identification For Linked Open Data, Sarasi Lalithsena, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth, Prateek Jain

Kno.e.sis Publications

Linked Open Data (LOD) has emerged as one of the largest collections of interlinked structured datasets on the Web. Although the adoption of such datasets for applications is increasing, identifying relevant datasets for a specific task or topic is still challenging. As an initial step to make such identification easier, we provide an approach to automatically identify the topic domains of given datasets. Our method utilizes existing knowledge sources, more specifically Freebase, and we present an evaluation which validates the topic domains we can identify with our system. Furthermore, we evaluate the effectiveness of identified topic domains for the purpose …

Semantics-Empowered Big Data Processing With Applications, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

We discuss the nature of Big Data and address the role of semantics in analyzing and processing Big Data that arises in the context of Physical-Cyber-Social Systems. We organize our research around the Five Vs of Big Data, where four of the Vs are harnessed to produce the fifth V - value. To handle the challenge of Volume, we advocate semantic perception that can convert low-level observational data to higher-level abstractions more suitable for decision-making. To handle the challenge of Variety, we resort to the use of semantic models and annotations of data so that much of the intelligent processing …

City Notifications As A Data Source For Traffic Management, Pramod Anantharam, Biplav Srivastava Oct 2013

City Notifications As A Data Source For Traffic Management, Pramod Anantharam, Biplav Srivastava

Kno.e.sis Publications

A common problem for cities of developing countries like India in managing traffic is the lack of basic automated instrumentation to track road conditions or vehicle locations. Still, to help their citizens make informed travel decisions based on changing city dynamics; many cities have an authorized, city-initiated, notification service in place to alert subscribing commuters about road conditions. Here, alternative means may be used to create informal textual notifications e.g., inputs from field personnel, citizen updates, and pre-authorized events from city calendar. In this paper, we show that collections of such notifications, when processed with information extraction techniques, can turn …
