Greene County Parks And Trails: Community Survey, Center For Urban And Public Affairs, Wright State University

Government Services

This survey, conducted by APRI (formerly CUPA) captured how informed residents are about the parks and trails, where they get their information, their opinions of the quality and value of the parks and trails, what they feel should be the park district's top spending priorities, and to gauge the feasibility of a possible operating issue. Five hundred (500) voters, sampled from the Greene County Board of Elections Voter Registry, were interviewed for this survey from May 7, 2014 to June 3, 2014, resulting in 95% confidence for the study and a margin of error of +/- 4.4%.

A New Perspective On Visual Word Processing Efficiency, Joseph W. Houpt, James T. Townsend, Christopher Donkin Jan 2014

A New Perspective On Visual Word Processing Efficiency, Joseph W. Houpt, James T. Townsend, Christopher Donkin

Joseph W. Houpt

As a fundamental part of our daily lives, visual word processing has received much attention in the psychological literature. Despite the well established advantage of perceiving letters in a word or in a pseudoword over letters alone or in random sequences using accuracy, a comparable effect using response times has been elusive. Some researchers continue to question whether the advantage due to word context is perceptual. We use the capacity coefficient, a well established, response time based measure of efficiency to provide evidence of word processing as a particularly efficient perceptual process to complement those results from the accuracy domain.

City Of Fairborn Analysis Of Impediments To Fair Housing, Center For Urban And Public Affairs, Wright State University Jan 2014

City Of Fairborn Analysis Of Impediments To Fair Housing, Center For Urban And Public Affairs, Wright State University

Community Development

The City of Fairborn Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing (AI) is a review of barriers to fair housing in the public and private sector which restricts housing choices or the availability of housing choices based on a person’s membership in a protected class. Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act) prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings to the protected classes, which include:

  • Race
  • Familial status
  • Disability
  • Sex
  • Religion
  • National origin

The 1988 amendments to the Fair Housing Act also created an exemption to the provisions which allowed discrimination on the …

Investigating The Relationship Between Binocular Disparity, Viewer Discomfort, And Depth Task Performance On Stereoscopic 3d Displays, John Paul Mcintire Jan 2014

Investigating The Relationship Between Binocular Disparity, Viewer Discomfort, And Depth Task Performance On Stereoscopic 3d Displays, John Paul Mcintire

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Stereoscopic 3D (S3D) displays offer the capability to enhance user performance on a variety of depth tasks. However, the benefit derived from viewing S3D depends in part on the magnitude of binocular disparity that is displayed. Surprisingly few studies have directly investigated the relationship between disparity and depth task performance. The studies that have been conducted suggest that a minimum amount of disparity (10-50 arc min) may be needed to improve performance over conditions in which no S3D is present, but it is unclear the extent to which performance might improve with increases in disparity beyond this range.

The Role Of The Nurse In Family Coping After Miscarriage, Wesley Hannebaum Jan 2014

The Role Of The Nurse In Family Coping After Miscarriage, Wesley Hannebaum

Symposium of Student Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials

When a miscarriage occurs, it affects the entire family unit, making coping an important part of healing during this time. After miscarriage, women are at increased risk for developing mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. Miscarriage is seldom seen as a concern for the father of the lost child, and thus their feelings are often ignored. It is important for the nurse to know how to best help these men, women, and the rest of the involved family cope after miscarriage so they can move on in a healthy way. The following is a review of the literature to …

Alignment And Dataset Identification Of Linked Data In Semantic Web, Kalpa Gunaratna, Sarasi Lalithsena, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud has gained significant attention in the Semantic Web community over the past few years. With rapid expansion in size and diversity, it consists of over 800 interlinked datasets with over 60 billion triples. These datasets encapsulate structured data and knowledge spanning over varied domains such as entertainment, life sciences, publications, geography, and government. Applications can take advantage of this by using the knowledge distributed over the interconnected datasets, which is not realistic to find in a single place elsewhere. However, two of the key obstacles in using the LOD cloud are the limited support …

In the new digital world connected by ICT the methods and availability of communication have not only transformed the way people interact, learn, and do business, it also has political implications. ICT, specifically Web2.0 social media, increase the reach of campaigns and assist in organizing and executing reform movements. The state of Bosnia-Herzegovina presents a unique test case as it is a post-conflict state moving toward democratic consolidation that emerged in 1995, when the World Wide Web was making inroads into daily life. The state is divided, politically and socially, into ethnic cleavages. ICT in BiH has not been a …

Location Prediction Of Twitter Users Using Wikipedia, Revathy Krishnamurthy, Pavan Kapanipathi, Amit P. Sheth, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

The mining of user generated content in social media has proven very effective in domains ranging from personalization and recommendation systems to crisis management. The knowledge of online users locations makes their tweets more informative and adds another dimension to their analysis. Existing approaches to predict the location of Twitter users are purely data-driven and require large training data sets of geo-tagged tweets. The collection and modelling process of tweets can be time intensive. To overcome this drawback, we propose a novel knowledge based approach that does not require any training data. Our approach uses information in Wikipedia, about cities …

Rater Characteristics In Performance Evaluation Accuracy, Shotaro Hakoyama

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The current study examined how various rater-level variables are related to performance ratings. Student participants watched a series of video clips depicting high, medium, and low levels of employee work performance. The participants then rated the performance of the employee depicted in the video on a graphic rating scale. The rater level variables examined for the current study included rater goals, cognitive ability, conscientiousness, and agreeableness. The results indicated that focusing the on the strength of the employee (strength goal) was associated with rating elevation and that rater conscientiousness was associated with rating deflation. Strength goal, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and cognitive …

Goal Orientations And Self-Efficacy Interactions On Self-Set Goal Level, Truman Joseph Gore Jan 2014

Goal Orientations And Self-Efficacy Interactions On Self-Set Goal Level, Truman Joseph Gore

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The current study examined the interactive effects of goal orientations (the tendencies of an individual to set specific types of goals, i.e., learning or performance goals), and self-efficacy (an evaluation of one's own competence on a task) on self-set goal levels and performance in an academic context. Past research has found that learning goal orientation and self-efficacy are both positively related to the difficulty of self-selected goals and to performance whereas avoid-performance goal orientation is negatively associated with both the difficulty of self-set goals and performance. The current study found that learning goal orientation and self-efficacy were positively related to …

Psychological Contract Breach By The Supervisor, Darrell Scott Kelly Jan 2014

Psychological Contract Breach By The Supervisor, Darrell Scott Kelly

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

My study examined the effect of psychological contract breach by a supervisor on employee job outcomes (OCBs, CWBs, and job satisfaction). Also, I tested the moderating effects of the quality of a relationship between an employee and his or her supervisor, and an employee and his or her organization, on the psychological contract breach - job outcomes relationship. I found minimal support that employees distinguish between their supervisors and their organizations when assessing psychological contract breach. Also, I found no support that relationship quality had any moderating effects. However, I did find that LMX-I and LMX-O might measure the same …

Challenge Accepted: Self-Enhancement Through The Pursuit Of Difficulty, Julie Anne Steinke Jan 2014

Challenge Accepted: Self-Enhancement Through The Pursuit Of Difficulty, Julie Anne Steinke

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Individual resilience is popular topic whereby researchers attempt to identify characteristics of individuals who react positively to stress. However, such research uses a reactionary approach, attempting to characterize successful individuals after they experience adversity and does not explain why some individuals proactively seek out challenging circumstances. Pursuing challenge is a new construct that explains why individuals proactively increase stress as a strategic mechanism for developmental purposes. I developed and validated a measurement tool for pursuing challenge in multiple studies. Additionally, I explored relationships between pursuing challenge and similar constructs (e.g., grit, proactive personality, and self-efficacy), as well as the extent …

Mothers Who Kill Children They Have Adopted, Katherine Elizabeth Sunder Jan 2014

Mothers Who Kill Children They Have Adopted, Katherine Elizabeth Sunder

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A mother killing her child is a disturbing and puzzling crime. While extensive research has been conducted on mothers who kill their biological children, little information is known about mothers who kill children they have adopted. Previous research has suggested specific typologies and characteristics of mothers who kill their biological children. The current research reviews these typologies and investigates whether they can be applied to the mothers who kill adopted children. A review of the cases in the United States from 1993 through 2013 that involved mothers who killed children they had adopted was conducted. The similarities and differences between …

What role does foreign support play when an insurgent group adopts terrorism? Utilizing both quantitative analysis and in-depth case studies, this thesis examines the effects of foreign support among other commonly cited explanations for an insurgency's adoption of terrorism. In addition to observing the effects of foreign support on the adoption of terrorism, the effects of government regime type, insurgent group goal type, insurgent group strength, and foreign benefactor type are analyzed. After executing a multiple logistic regression analysis of 109 intrastate conflicts occurring from 1972 to 2007 and conducting detailed case studies for the Tamils in Sri Lanka and …

Counterinsurgency In Afghanistan: A Last Ditch Effort To Turn Around A Failing War, Benjamin P. Mccullough

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

As the United States moved closer to ending its military involvement in Afghanistan by the end of 2014, intense debate on the relevance and success of the United States' counterinsurgency (COIN) strategy in the country continues. Many observers have been quick to declare the strategy a failure without fully analyzing the critical components of COIN doctrine that are necessary for a campaign to succeed, and the extent to which those components were in place in Afghanistan. This study examines the case of Afghanistan by determining whether the U.S.'s counterinsurgency strategy was successful in achieving the four main objectives identified by …

Multicultural Public Policy And Homegrown Terrorism In The European Union, Macklin Keith Everly Jan 2014

Multicultural Public Policy And Homegrown Terrorism In The European Union, Macklin Keith Everly

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

From the 1970s to the 1990s, Western European democracies embraced multiculturalist public policy (MCPP). This was in an effort to address and accommodate the minority rights of immigrants who found their way to Europe during its post-WWII labor force recovery. By the mid-1990s, there was a backlash against such policy and movement towards integrationist values. This has been exacerbated in the wake of radical Islamist terror attacks like those of 9/11, the London 7/7 bombing, and the Paris Metro Bombings of 1995. Attention has been focused on the threat, incidence, and causal factors of homegrown jihadism within Europe. The research …

The Effectiveness Of Warnings At Reducing The Prevalence Of Insufficient Effort Responding, Caitlin E. Blackmore Jan 2014

The Effectiveness Of Warnings At Reducing The Prevalence Of Insufficient Effort Responding, Caitlin E. Blackmore

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Unmotivated participants who fail to devote sufficient effort to their survey responses can influence the quality of self-report data. The majority of the published literature on this topic has concerned techniques for detecting insufficient effort responding (IER), whereas little attention has been given to developing effective procedures for preventing IER. There are numerous advantages to preventing IER, one of which is that discarding data is unnecessary. The current study examined the effects of a warning manipulation on the prevalence of IER and the quality of the resulting data. Statistically significant differences between conditions on four of the IER detection measures …

Onedayton Issue Guide - The Time Is Now: Making The Most Of Our Rebound, Onedayton

Records of Dayton Together (MS-603)

Years of decline in Montgomery County have brought concerns how we got where we are and how we improve our situation. Proposed solutions like collaboration have threatened local control, this in a community that came together in 1913 to work our way out of the worst disaster we’ve ever faced. Deliberative forums on the issue of economic development will not be easy. We remind participants that the objective of these forums is to begin to work together for the common good and local control.

Shared Leadership In Team-Based Learning Classroom Teams And Its Relationship To Decision Quality, Elizabeth J. Peyton Jan 2014

Shared Leadership In Team-Based Learning Classroom Teams And Its Relationship To Decision Quality, Elizabeth J. Peyton

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Team-based learning (TBL) is an increasingly popular teaching technique within healthcare education. However, much remains unknown about the processes underlying its effectiveness. I examined shared leadership behaviors in TBL teams and their relationship to academic performance and team decision quality both in the classroom and in an applied setting. To examine these relationships, I used round-robin peer evaluations that I analyzed using the Social Relations Model. Results failed to support my hypotheses. However, my study raised several issues that future researchers should consider: the relationship between shared and vertical leadership, proper conceptualization of Followership, using Social Relations Model estimates versus …
