Sponsoring The Next Generation: Parental Willingness To Pay For Higher Education, Lala C. Steelman, Brian Powell
Sponsoring The Next Generation: Parental Willingness To Pay For Higher Education, Lala C. Steelman, Brian Powell
Faculty Publications
Although sociologists and economists have been widely concerned with parental investment in children, that investment has rarely been examined directly. The Parent Survey of the High School and Beyond data set provides material for examining the traits of parents and children that shape parental payment for higher education. Parents' reported willingness and ability to pay, along with savings for children's future education, are shaped first by total income and the number of children who must share that income. Moreover, parental investment in higher education is increased when the parents themselves received parental financial support, which suggests continuity over generations. Gender …

Estimates Of Census Underenumeration Based On Genealogies, John W. Adams, Alice Bee Kasakoff

We have been studying the migrations of the descendants of nine men who came to Massachusetts before 1650 and have compiled a computerized database that includes all the people born before 1860 in the patrilines. Thus we have what the nine genealogists who studied these families thought was close to a complete list of family members alive in 1850. Here we focus on our attempts to find these individuals on the 1850 federal census.
One Hundred Years Of Investigations At The Linn Site In Southern Illinois, Charles R. Cobb
One Hundred Years Of Investigations At The Linn Site In Southern Illinois, Charles R. Cobb
Faculty Publications
The Linn site represents one of the major Mississippian occupations in the Mississippi River floodplain of southwestern Illinois. The multiple mound center has received sporadic professional attention over the years dating from Bureau of Ethnology investigations in the latter part of the nineteenth century; however, little work by modern standards has been conducted at the site. Consequently, very little is known about the Linn site and its relationship to other Mississippian traditions in surrounding regions. This study synthesizes data from past research on the site, the results of which indicate that the Linn site likely played a major role in …

Operations Research And Organizational Decision-Making In Academic Libraries, Therrin C. Dahlin
Operations Research And Organizational Decision-Making In Academic Libraries, Therrin C. Dahlin
Faculty Publications
Operations research entered the library scene in the 1960s and '70s, and has attracted much interest from librarians. This paper examines the assumptions made by selected operations researchers concerning organizational decision-making in academic libraries. The assumptions then are compared to Richard L. Daft's contingency framework of organizational decision-making to determine the appropriateness of applying operations research assumptions and methods to organizational decision-making in an academic library setting. A review of the operations researchers' assumptions and Daft's framework suggests that the operations research approach may be appropriately applied to only a relatively narrow category of problems in academic libraries that match …

Impacts On California Agriculture Of A Ban On Rice Straw Burning, B. Gardner Delworth, Richard E. Howitt, Charles Goodman
Impacts On California Agriculture Of A Ban On Rice Straw Burning, B. Gardner Delworth, Richard E. Howitt, Charles Goodman
Faculty Publications
The burning of agricultural residues, particularly rice straw, has long been an issue of public concern in California's Sacramento Valley. Especially during days of autumn temperature inversions, the smoke in the atmosphere from burning is regarded by some as a serious health hazard and by nearly all residents as a public nuisance. Strong pressures have resulted in stringent regulations over agricultural burning, but a growing number of voices advocate a strict prohibition on burning. The prospect of a burning ban is worrisome to rice growers since burning is not only the most cost-effective way of disposing of the straw, but …

Economic Performance, Voting, And Political Support: A Unified Approach, Henry W. Chappell Jr.
Economic Performance, Voting, And Political Support: A Unified Approach, Henry W. Chappell Jr.
Faculty Publications
A presidential vote function and a presidential approval ratings function are jointly estimated for U.S. post-war observations. The estimation technique treats the two equations as seemingly unrelated regressions with unequal numbers of observations. Cross-equation restrictions implying that voters and poll respondents use identical standards in judging the economic performance of incumbents are imposed and tested. Estimates show that both votes and approval ratings are influenced by GNP growth and inflation. The results suggest that poll respondents are more inflation averse than voters; however, tests of this hypothesis are not conclusive.

Opportunity, Willingness, And The Diffusion Of War, Randolph M. Siverson, Harvey Starr
Opportunity, Willingness, And The Diffusion Of War, Randolph M. Siverson, Harvey Starr
Faculty Publications
Using borders and alliances as indicators of opportunity and willingness, respectively, we test the relationship between the sea and the diffusion of war during the 1816-1965 period. The impact of borders and alliances, individually and in combination, on the growth of ongoing war through "infectious" diffusion is shown through the comparison of baseline cases to cases where states at peace were exposed to various "treatments" comprised of warring border nations or warring alliance partners. The findings indicate that the probability of war diffusion is substantially increased as opportunities and willingness increase, particularly when such geographic and political factors are combined. …

Collection Development In Canadian Studies: A Practical Model, Therrin C. Dahlin
Collection Development In Canadian Studies: A Practical Model, Therrin C. Dahlin
Faculty Publications
It is often a difficult task to develop a Canadian studies library collection. As with any area studies collection, where the focus is on a geographic region rather than a particular discipline, a broad range of subjects typically must be covered. To add to the difficulty, Canadian materials are published in both English and French. And if the library is located in the United States, the librarian or bibliographer is faced with the inconvenience of coping with two different national currencies. The complexities inherent in Canadian studies cloud the collection development picture and obscure the appropriate direction to take. With …
Distancing As A Casual Factor In The Development Of /0/ And /X/ In Spanish, David Eddington
Distancing As A Casual Factor In The Development Of /0/ And /X/ In Spanish, David Eddington

The evolution of the Spanish sibilant system has been an object of study since the late nineteenth century. Since that time, a myriad of books and articles have been published on the subject whose major focus has been to determine the exact nature of the sibilant changes and the chronology of each change. As is the case in most historical work, the question of why phonological systems evolve usually takes on only secondary importance. Among those theories proposed in order to explain why phonetic changes occur is the functionalist idea that there needs to be an optimal acoustic distance between …

Gestational Age Reporting And Preterm Delivery, Greg R. Alexander, Mark E. Tompkins, Donald A. Cornely
Gestational Age Reporting And Preterm Delivery, Greg R. Alexander, Mark E. Tompkins, Donald A. Cornely
Faculty Publications
This study examines recent trends in the reporting completeness and quality of gestational age estimates derived from the date of the last normal menses (DLNM) as reported in South Carolina vital records from 1974 to 1985. Noteworthy improvements in the completeness of reporting emerged during this period with a decline from 31.1 percent missing information in 1974 to 6.6 percent missing in 1985. Completeness of reporting and strategies for imputing values for missing data were analyzed for their impact on the calculation of the percentage of pr?term live births. The results indicate that the underreporting of gestational age can lead …
