Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

During the past decade, the application of vacuum preloading for stabilising soft coastal clay and other low-lying estuarine soils has become popular in Australia. The cost-effectiveness isa major factor in most projects in view of the significantly reduced time for achieving high degree of consolidation. Due to an increase in trade activities at the Port of Brisbane, new facilities on Fisherman Islands at the mouth of the Brisbane River will be constructed on the new outer area (235 ha) adjacent to the existing port facilities via land reclamation. A vacuum assited surcharge load and conventional surcharge scheme in conjunction with …

Characteristics Of Power Quality Disturbances In Australia: Voltage Harmonics, S T. Elphick, V W. Smith, V J. Gosbell, S Perera Jan 2013

Characteristics Of Power Quality Disturbances In Australia: Voltage Harmonics, S T. Elphick, V W. Smith, V J. Gosbell, S Perera

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Management of harmonic voltage levels can impose significant economic impacts for both electricity suppliers and customers. For the case where harmonic voltage levels are high, economic costs include damage to equipment and associated loss of production due to high voltage harmonic levels as well as the costs associated with mitigation of harmonic currents, for example, harmonic filters. In the alternate scenario, ie. the case where harmonic voltage levels are acceptable, considerable expense may be incurred mitigating harmonic currents unnecessarily due to lack of knowledge of harmonic levels and/or network capabilities. As such, there is considerable potential for industry to make …

Consistency Proof Of Two Denoising Methods And The Parameter Selection Of Pde Filtering Method For Espi, Zhitao Xiao, Quan Yuan, Fang Zhang, Jun Wu, Lei Geng, Zhenbei Xu, Jiangtao Xi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) is a nondestructive, whole-field optical measurement technique. The removal of speckle noise is fundamental to extract measurement information accurately. In this letter, two filtering methods based on the oriented feature of ESPI fringes, i.e., the second-order oriented partial differential equation (SOOPDE) and oriented, regularized quadratic-cost function filtering methods, are first proven to be consistent. An important question in solving partial differential equation, i.e., how to select suitable parameters in an adaptive manner, is then discussed. The computer-simulated and experimentally obtained ESPI fringe patterns and phase map are processed by the SOOPDE filtering model with adaptive …

The K-Theory Of Heegaard Quantum Lens Spaces, Piotr M. Hajac, Adam Rennie, Bartosz Zielinski Jan 2013

The K-Theory Of Heegaard Quantum Lens Spaces, Piotr M. Hajac, Adam Rennie, Bartosz Zielinski

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Representing Z/NZ as roots of unity, we restrict a natural U(1)-action on the Heegaard quantum sphere to Z/NZ, and call the quotient spaces Heegaard quantum lens spaces. Then we use this representation of Z/NZ to construct an associated complex loine bundle. This paper proves the stable non-triviality of these line bundles over any of the quantum lens spaces we consider. We use the pullback structure of the C*-algebra of the lens space to compute its K-theory via the Mayer-Vietoris sequence, and an explicit form of the Bass connecting homomorphism to prove the stable non-triviality of the bundles. On the algebraic …

Is 'Community' Important For Community Information Systems?, Alison E. Freeman, Peter Hyland, Mark Freeman, Karlheinz Kautz

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Community information systems have the power to transform communities. However, without fully understanding the pre-requisite factors affecting community information system viability, and the complex relationships between these factors, communities struggle to manage such projects in a way that leads to viable systems that deliver real benefits. This paper develops and presents a Model of Community Information System Viability Pre-requisite Factors, based on both existing literature and the study of three community information system projects. This Model represents the generic factors that inform viability (i.e. leadership, active membership, funding, awareness, and system design and functionality), and also considers the impact of …

Size And Power Of Cointegration Tests With Non-Normal Garch Error Distributions, Chaiwat Kosapattarapim, Yan-Xia Lin, Michael Mccrae Jan 2013

Size And Power Of Cointegration Tests With Non-Normal Garch Error Distributions, Chaiwat Kosapattarapim, Yan-Xia Lin, Michael Mccrae

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Several tests for cointegration among non-stationary financial time series have been developed including the Dicky Fuller (1979) unit root tests, the Cointegration Regression Durbin-Watson test (1983), the Wild Bootstrap test (2003) and the Johansen likelihood ratio tests (1988). The Johensen's tests appeared to provide superior results when the tests were originally applied to situations where the cointegration errors were normally distributed. However, substantial empirical evidences show that financial time series tend to be nonnormal in their distribution which may, in turn, lead to non-normal GARCH type cointegration error distributions. The question addressed in this paper is whether the Johansen's tests …

An Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Interdiction Regimes Against Terrorist Attacks In An Urban Transport Hub, D Keep, I Piper, A Green

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper examines the effect of varying attack and interdiction strategies, both alone and in combination, in an urban transport hub. Particular attention is paid to the potential disruption to normal commuter services resulting from an intrusive stop and search regime. The work presented here represents a qualitative investigation in that many parameters relating to the details of the interdiction mechanisms are first-order approximations. However, the background against which the investigation is conducted has been constructed to be as realistic as possible. The simulation is performed using our generalised microsimulation framework Simulacron , along with a reper- toire of simulation …

Constant-Size Dynamic K-Times Anonymous Authentication, Man Ho Au, Willy Susilo, Yi Mu, Sherman S. M Chow

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Dynamic k-times anonymous authentication (k-TAA) schemes allow members of a group to be authenticated anonymously by application providers for a bounded number of times, where application providers can independently and dynamically grant or revoke access right to members in their own group. In this paper, we construct a dynamic k-TAA scheme with space and time complexities of O(log(k)) and a variant, in which the authentication protocol only requires constant time and space complexities at the cost of O(k) -sized public key. We also describe some tradeoff issues between different system characteristics. We detail all the zero-knowledge proof-of-knowledge protocols involved and …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modelling Of Respirable Dust And Gas Behaviour On A Longwall Face, T Ren, Z Wang Jan 2013

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modelling Of Respirable Dust And Gas Behaviour On A Longwall Face, T Ren, Z Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Longwall mining is the dominant form of underground coal mining methods in Australia. As production increases there is also a need for increased face ventilation rate for gas dilution and dust mitigation. The behaviour of gas emission and respirable dust in a longwall face is a complex process because of the nature of longwall operations. The generation, dispersion and transport of airborne dust and gas are governed mainly by the spatial velocity and the movement pattern of the ventilation air. To understand the gas and dust behaviour in a complex longwall mining environment and to evaluate the effectiveness of various …

A Relaxation Strategy With Fuzzy Constraints For Supplier Selection In A Power Market, Dien Tuan Le, Minjie Zhang, Fenghui Ren

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A power market is a special kind of e-markets. In a power market, all trading processes are related to three parties: buyers, suppli- ers and brokers. A broker acts as middlemen between buyers and sup- pliers in a trading process. In a power market, how to select a potential supplier for a buyer through a broker based on the buyer's requirements is a challenging research problem. This paper proposes relaxation strat- egy with fuzzy constraints for supplier selection. The strategy includes three components, i.e., a supplier selection, a fuzzy constraint relaxation, and a decision making. The major contributions of this …

Tuning Performance Of E-Business Applications Through Automatic Transformation Of Persistent Database Structures, Janusz R. Getta

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Performance of e-business applications strongly depends on internal implementations of persistent database structures and on effective algorithms processing these structures. Commercial database systems, which are the basis of e-business applications typically implement logical database structures with one-size-fits-all persistent storage structure. This work investigates a new class of database systems where a conceptual and logical view of a database can be implemented in many different ways depending on the performance requirements of database applications. We consider the improvements to performance of e-business applications through automatic changes of the persistent database structures in the ways indicated by the performance statistics obtained from …

Modernisation Of Rail Tracks For Higher Speeds And Greater Freight, B Indraratna, S Nimbalkar, C Rujikiatkamjorn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

An efficient transportation infrastructure has become utmost priority for global economic reforms. Railways are designed to provide high speed passenger and heavy haul freight transportation. Ballast is one of important constituents of the rail track however, it experiences excessive deformation and degradation from trains operating at high speeds. In addition, tracks built along coastal areas often undergo large settlements due to soft compressible clay deposits. This leads to progressive track deterioration and necessitates frequent and costly track maintenance. The use of artificial inclusions such as geogrids, geocomposites, shock mats and prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) is often an attractive design alternative …

Voltage Sag Susceptibility Of 230 V Equipment, Sean Elphick, Victor Smith, Victor Gosbell, Gerrard Drury, Sarath Perera

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The ITI curve developed by the Information Technology Industry Council (USA) describes an AC input voltage envelope, which typically can be tolerated by most information technology (IT) equipment supplied by nominal 120 V 60 Hz electricity networks. Although the curve ostensibly applies only to IT equipment supplied at 120 V 60 Hz it is often used throughout the electricity supply industry, including at other nominal voltages and frequencies, without modification or consideration of applicability to provide an indication of the input voltage tolerance of a wide range of equipment. This paper details a preliminary study aimed at developing an ITI …

The Simulation Of Particle Flow Mechanisms In Dustiness Testers, Sathaphon Wangchai, David B. Hastie, Peter W. Wypych

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Dust generation is a common result of many bulk handling and mining applications and has potentially serious consequences to the surrounding environment as well as workers and nearby community. Companies need to know how much and what type of dust is being generated so they can find ways to reduce this dust. Dustiness testers can be used for this purpose. This paper investigates the rotating drum testers used for dustiness testing of bulk solids and the subsequent discrete element method (DEM) simulation of the particle mechanisms. Preliminary comparisons of the rotating drum designs were undertaken using particle/bulk parameters of a …

Determining The Geometry Of Mass-Flow Bins - Some Important Considerations, Peter Arnold Jan 2013

Determining The Geometry Of Mass-Flow Bins - Some Important Considerations, Peter Arnold

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

It has taken some time to obtain general acceptance but in recent times, at least in Australia, competent designers of mass-flow bins use techniques based on the traditional concepts of Jenike to determine the appropriate geometry for mass-flow hoppers to handle bulk solids reliably. While the traditional Jenike design concepts may appear straightforward experience dictates that some important considerations need to be exercised during the design process, especially when handling the more difficult bulk solids, to ensure that the final bin construction performs to expectations. Some of the important considerations that this paper will highlight include: • Appropriate bulk solids …

Novel Modulation And Control Strategy For Five-Level Anpc Converter With Unbalanced Dc Voltage Applied To A Single-Phase Grid Connected Pv System, Hamid R. Teymour, Danny Sutanto, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Phil Ciufo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper proposes a new control strategy and a novel modulation technique for a grid-connected photo-voltaic (PV) system using a single-phase five-level flying capacitor (FC) based active-neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter. The proposed modulator can control the FC voltage to follow the requested reference value and simultaneously generate the required ac output voltage regardless of the values of the dc capacitor voltages of the converter. By implementing this method, smaller values of dc-link and flying capacitors can be used even in applications that could experience ripple or transient in the capacitors voltage. In the grid-connected single-phase five-level ANPC, where the capacitors can …
